Preventive repositioning of the settled city

    No full text
The frequency of meteorological impacts causing damage nowadays far exceeds the idea of exceptionality. The need for post-event recoveries is increasing in number per year and in costs. In many places, it will soon become too expensive in terms of economic, social and psychological resources to operate the recovery. Climate change calls for the need to seriously consider the option of retreating from areas with a risk that is not manageable. Nevertheless, no European country has a procedure to assess, evaluate and plan the retreat option for climate change adaptation. This chapter uses the Italian Northeast region as a test site to elaborate an easily replicable evaluation experience for assessing expected impacts and evaluating the relocation opportunity

The Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice: Towards a Digital Fruition

    No full text
The Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore is a complex system of environments that over the centuries–starting from an earlier pre-existence arose between the VIII and IX century–has undergone many variations and structural additions, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Despite the high tourist attendance and the vast decorative apparatus that the church houses, its fruition, lacks support materials that can guide the ideal visitor to discover the church, its history and its features, but also to obtain information regarding the sculptural and pictorial works. The essay is focused on the creation of a digital platform capable of guiding the ideal visitor of the place to get useful information for the museum visit: an online system that allows free access, in the place or remotely, capable of providing an interactive guided tour. The platform takes advantage of appropriate hotspots positioned along an ideal path of visit; each hotspot allows to access to descriptive panels through which the works of art are classified. The guided tour is implemented by texts, images, videos and digital models, according to the most relevant environments: information is organized in thematic graphic layouts, accessible in an intuitive and immediate readability. The work carried out is aimed at the touristic promotion of cultural heritage through the creation of a virtual environment and allows the sharing of content to the wider audience, ensuring the museum enjoyment of the environments involved and supporting the visit of the places

Preservation institutions and starchitecture in Venice: the approval process behind Constitution Bridge and the Fondaco dei Tedeschi

    No full text
This article examines the role of preservation institutions in shaping ‘starchitect’ projects in Venice through a comparative analysis of the approval processes for Santiago Calatrava’s Constitution Bridge (1996–2008) and OMA's adaptive reuse of Fondaco dei Tedeschi as a luxury retail complex (2009–2016). The methodology combined archival research (primarily drawing on the files of the Superintendency of Venice and Its Lagoon), press analysis, bibliographical review, field observations, and interviews. Using the lens of assemblage thinking, four key dynamics were identified: (1) preservation officials' discretionary power operated within multiscalar assemblages in multidirectional geographies of power; (2) core material agencies were highly relevant elements but were subject to the political stakes of each project; (3) local firms served as mediators between preservation bodies and starchitects, while assemblage expanders added further complexity; and (4) international actors globalised the assemblages, but approval processes remained within local and national boundaries. The case of Constitution Bridge demonstrated how powerful political drivers can coopt local preservation bodies, leading to acquiescence and fast-tracked approvals that bypass rigorous oversight. In contrast, the Fondaco case shows how assertive intervention by national institutions can enforce conservation principles against private economic pressure, leading to a materially different, negotiated outcome

The oriental carpet is home and temple, and the conical “hats” of Jeddah reflect the nomadic tradition of the tents of pilgrims travelling to Mecca, constructing the fabric of the element that preserves, according to the theories of Gottfried Semper and Alois Riegl, the most ancient meaning of construction and protection

Condizioni di efficacia di politiche urbane innovative

    No full text

Digital Echoes—Revisiting the Venetian Church of Crociferi from the Perspective of Artificial Intelligence

This work investigates the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies within the framework of the discipline of architectural representation. It challenges the typical AI workflow, which often applies AI to unknown territories resulting in unpredictable, yet too easily accepted, outcomes. The case study of the experiment, partly described here, is the lost Church of Santa Maria Assunta dei Crociferi, in Venice, Italy. Despite the lack of scholarly attention, this site is noted for its historical significance. The experimentation begins by analysing the research made by two architecture historians: Sherman and Galeazzo, then DALL-E is used to generate images based on the same textual information, adapted to prompts. Finally, the results are evaluated in relation to traditional approaches belonging to the methodologies of history of architecture and architectural drawing. The aim is to observe how the AI model responds to the gaps in visual documentation, without necessarily expecting a precise reconstruction of the church. A key factor impacting this methodology is AI’s real-time evolution, which may shift research parameters. Most of all, this study discusses what the AI-generated images reveal about the databases used to train these models, as the experiment identifies patterns that reflect aspects of architectural knowledge widely available online. The paper investigates the still blurred connections between AI research and architectural practice, approaching both possibilities and limitations, providing architects with critical knowledge and enhancing awareness of their newest instruments and tools

Historic Buildings and Sustainability: The Knowledge Buildings Hold and Passive Design Solutions

    No full text
The new European directive on energy efficiency will have to be transposed by many countries soon in order to meet decarbonization targets. Its implementation across a continent characterized by buildings of varying age and state of conservation will be most effective if this transposition takes into account the diverse characteristics and values that distinguish these structures. Newly constructed buildings can incorporate effective solutions for reaching these goals. More generally, even ordinary buildings on the outskirts of expanding historic centers are well suited to integrating energy-efficient solutions. For historic buildings, the situation is markedly different. A distinction must be made between structures built before 1945 and those formally classified as cultural heritage, which represent only a small portion of Europe’s building stock. For the latter, unsuitable measures derived from energy efficiency practices developed in other contexts must be avoided. At the same time, these buildings should not be automatically exempted from energy efficiency targets; instead, suitable measures should be identified, including innovative approaches. Of greatest concern, owing to the considerable discretion afforded to individual countries, are the older buildings not formally recognized as cultural heritage. These structures, which account for 25 to 30 percent of the total building stock, form part of Europe’s collective identity and are at risk of significant alteration as a consequence of the climate neutrality targets introduced by the European Union. This raises key questions about safeguarding the values of historic buildings, recognizing the role of structures built before the advent of climate and comfort control systems, and identifying the tools already available to support this transition. This contribution does not aim to propose specific construction practices but rather to clarify the regulatory framework and objectives of energy efficiency in relation to historic buildings, focusing on certain particularly significant aspects. Ongoing projects with Italian stakeholders are closely related to these reflections, and their results may be presented in due course
