Steady-State Resonant Sloshing in an Upright Cylindrical Container Performing a Circular Orbital Motion

    No full text
The nonlinear Narimanov-Moiseev multimodal equations are used to study the swirling-type resonant sloshing in a circular base container occurring due to an orbital (rotary) tank motion in the horizontal plane with the forcing frequency close to the lowest natural sloshing frequency. An asymptotic steady-state solution is constructed and the response amplitude curves are analyzed to prove their hard-spring type behavior for the finite liquid depth (the mean liquid depth-to-the-radius ratio ). This behavior type is supported by the existing experimental data. The wave elevations at the vertical wall are satisfactorily predicted except for a frequency range where the model test observations reported wave breaking and/or mean rotational flows.publishedVersion© 2018 Ihor Raynovskyy and Alexander Timokha. Розробляється модальний метод для задачi про коливання рiдини у резервуарi квадратного перерiзу, який виконує перiодичнi горизон- тальнi та кутовi рухи малої амплiтуди. Аналiз показує, що домiнан- тна хвильова компонента виключно визначається першою гармонiкою перiодичного збурення. Еквiвалентнi гармонiчнi рухи є зворотно- поступального чи елiптичного типу. Вивчено усталенi резонанснi хви- льовi режими для таких типiв збурення. Organising Centres in a 2D Discontinuous Map

Properties of one-dimensional (1D) piecewise monotone maps with a singleSushko, I.Avrutin, V.Gardini, L. discontinuity point, also known as Lorenz maps, have been the focus of many researchers from various theoretical and applied fields. Several bifurcation structures in the parameter space of these maps have been well described, particularly the period adding bifurcation structure. This structure is formed by periodicity regions related to attracting cycles with the rotation numbers following the well-known Farey sequences. To explore similar structures in two-dimensional (2D) discontinuous maps, we propose a map with an invariant manifold (given by the x-axis) where this map simplifies to a Lorenz map. As a result, the parameter space of the 2D map contains a complete period adding bifurcation structure associated with the cycles on the x-axis, referred to as border cycles. Our 2D map is constructed in such a way that the border cycles lose their transverse stability via a transcritical bifurcation, leading to the appearance of attracting interior (i.e., non-border) cycles whose periodicity regions form a bifurcation structure that is a continuation of the period adding structure. Our goal is to understand how the complete period adding structure is modified when the related attracting cycles no longer belong to the x-axis associated with 1D discontinuous map. Specifically, we describe a novel kind of the organising centre from which this structure issues. As opposed to organising centres leading to appearance of the period adding structures known so far, in the case we report, the bifurcation structure in a neighbourhood of the organising centre is heavily affected by the multistability

The Author of the Alexander Romance

This paper, which is based on a portion of the introduction of the author’s edition of Il Romanzo di Alessandro (Mondadori: Fondazione Valla 2007), surveys the generic components of the Alexander Romance in an attempt to arrive at a definition of the work. The argument builds on Merkelbach’s categorisation of elements and uses Fusillo’s insight into the novel as an ‘encyclopaedic genre’ to propose that ‘historical novel’ is not, as Hägg contended, a misnomer for the work. The main components I discuss are: ‘life’; praxeis; chreiai; Cynic elements, including choliambic poetry and utopian perspectives; and the Egyptian aspects of the narrative. A concluding jeu d’esprit offers a characterisation of the putative author, his antecedents and his process of composition.Richard Stoneman was for 25 years editor for classics at Croom Helm and then Routledge. In 1997 he was appointed an Honorary Fellow in the department of classics, University of Exeter. After retiring from publishing in 2006 he has been pursuing his researches on the Alexander legends and teaching a course on the subject at Exeter. His Penguin translation of the Alexander Romance was published in 1991, and a volume of translated Legends of Alexander the Great appeared from Everyman in 1994. Also in 1994 he co-edited Greek Fiction with John Morgan. His edition of the Greek recensions of the Alexander Romance was published (volume I) by the Fondazione Valla in 2007 – volumes II and III will follow over the next few years – and his Alexander the Great: A Life in Legend appeared from Yale University Press in spring 2008. He is the author of a number of other books on Greek history and travel, and is writing a book on oracles
