    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Abstract : This biographical sketch attempts to quote some images of Otto Maria Carpeaux: various types of biographical constructions, carried out in different contexts by disparate authors under conditions just as distinct. It stems from a critical view of history, allowing for ?other images? fragmented and non-monumental ? to share the space. In dialogue with the montage principle, this sketch has two parts. The first, Possible Images, quotes the images produced during and after the life of the Austrian-Brazilian, who was born in Vienna in 1900, went to Brazil in exile in 1939 and died in Rio de Janeiro in 1978. The second part, Possible Montages, presents two possibilities of a biographical exercise: through the allegorical reading of documentary O Velho e o Novo (Otto Maria Carpeaux), understood as an instrument of intervention in the Brazilian dictatorship context and as a biographical retelling of the author?s European experiences; and through my Scrapbook of Critical Images, a record of the encounters in Carpeaux through critical images produced from the caesura of the present

This thesis focuses on the interpretation of the dramatic text as one of the main tools of drama directing, on contemporary approaches to the inductive method of directing, on naming the mutual relationship between directing and dramatic creation, and on the exploration of the so-called interpretative dialogue, which is viewed in two specific situations, namely in the case of directing one's own dramatic text and directing the text of another author. This artistic research further examines the limits and advantages of interpretive dialogue in these cases and illustrates them with examples from the directorial and dramatic work of the author of this thesis, in particular the staging of his play Vyhubyt and the creation of his graduate production of The Cold Child, as well as with several examples from the work of established artists from the German-speaking theatre environment. The thesis also includes a detailed analysis of Marius von Mayenburg's play The Cold Child, which focuses on the family as one of its main themes, and the setting of the play in the context of both Maria von Mayenburg's work and the development of German-language drama

The article analyzes the transformation of the Russian folk song “Dear Sir Sidor Karpovich”, studied by V. N. Toporov in 1979. This text was a prison game depicting a funeral rite and having a function of initiation, but re cently it has become a popular song and lost its minor mood. At the same time, the protagonist (Sidor Karpovich) loses his name and becomes a secondary character. The main role is taken by his wife, Lyubka, called by the epithet “gray dove”. The plot of the song is based on twists and turns of her life after the death of her husband. Analyzing the image of the dove in poetry and, in particular, in prison lyrics, as well as looking at possible influences of other popular songs, the author proposes possible reasons for such a transformation

On the Dating of One of Leo Tolstoy’s Letters to His Daughter Maria Tolstaya

The article deals with some aspects related to the dating, content, and interpretation of Leo Tolstoy’s letters to his middle daughter, Maria (1871–1906), who was a staunch supporter of her father’s religious and philosophical views. (For many years, she tried to build her life based on Tolstoy’s moral ideas.) In analyzing the 1890s Maria Tolstaya’s correspondence with Tolstoy, the author attempts to establish the conclusion that Tolstoy’s letter (dated late September 1895 in the Complete Works in 90 vols.) was actually written in early October 1894 and was a response to his daughter’s letter she sent him at the same time. The author applies the comparative method to justify this thesis. Tolstoy’s letter to Maria has ideological parallels and even textual overlaps with Tolstoy’s letter to Ivan Tregubov (3 October 1894). Also, there are other ideological and textual overlaps with dated 1894 sources. Additionally, the author reveals the content of Tolstoy’s letter to Maria, tracing the association of ideas contained in it with the basic provisions of Tolstoy’s religious and moral theory, with his understanding of the importance of chastity, spiritual evolution, and Divine love

Sincere backhanded compliments: exploring social, semiotic and cognitive dimensions of cryptosemic interaction

In polite cultures, praise serves as valuable social currency, yet, some compliments can be counterproductive. My dissertation is dedicated to identifying and analyzing mixed messages in communication called “cryptosemes”, with the central focus on popular compliments erected on a problematic premise. A cryptosemic compliment is a message in communication that is routinely exchanged on the virtue of its good intentions, while closer, mindful scrutiny reveals other obscured dimensions of meaning that subvert the implied praise but go unperceived or ignored by all parties involved. Cryptosemic compliments are rooted in deeply internalized, reified notions of what is normal, natural and true and serve as a window into cultural stereotypes and double-standards operating under the veneer of praise. The problematic dimensions of meaning within a cryptosemic compliment lie not in the verbalized content but in the unspoken, “mythologized”, mindlessly taken-for-granted presuppositions underlying the words. Drawing on Goffman’s concept of “face-work” as well as Brown and Levinson’s framework on politeness, I argue that cryptosemic praise is a “face-saving” discourse strategy automatically deployed in reaction to “face threatening social themes” that arise in conversations that either touch upon “controversial” topics or involve socio-culturally diverse participants. Referencing data from my empirical study, I further probe the hierarchical (vertical and horizontal) relationships and the power dynamics involved in giving, receiving and making sense of cryptosemic praise. Finally, a look at the cognitive structural mechanics of cryptosemes helps shine light onto the neuro-cognitive complexities involved in public self-expression and communication. Relying on Wilson’s theory of the “adaptive unconscious”, I suggest that there exists a cognitive dissonance on the level of cultural value systems: that popular cryptosemic compliments are a manifestation of an intra-personal conflict between “old” and “new” cultural posits as well as a “communication bypass” between the conscious and unconscious information processing / meaning-making faculties of the mind. An interdisciplinary analysis of cryptosemic praise exposes the subtle but entrenched language of inequality as well as the collective silences surrounding the uncomfortable social topics buried within these seemingly innocuous, socially sanctioned expressions of courtesy.Ph.
