Dmitrij Kuzmin im Interview mit Sergej Timofeev (Lettland)

    No full text

Syncretism in the Vremennik of Ivan Timofeev. The Vremennik of Ivan Timofeev stands out against the sources of the Time of Troubles because of its efforts at conceptualizing. One term occurs throughout the narrative: "the earth". It refers both to Russia and to the other meaning it has in Russian culture : "Mother - damp earth" associated with, indeed identified to, the "native" mother and the Mother of God. The dynastic rupture, the civil war and the foreign intervention that followed have the same cause: before dying the last Riurikovich had not left in the womb of earth the embryo that was entitled to reign. The tsar is therefore the husband and the son of the same wife-mother. The non-fulfilment of the incest appears as a break of the natural order. To stress his idea, Timofeev resorts to a "parable": a rhetorical device destined to express the "truth". With the accession of Mikhail Romanov, accompanied by his mother, the widowhood of the earth is ended. The new tsar is then legitimate. Timofeev's work shows that the dvoeverie - intermingled paganism and Christianity - extended to the society as a whole, cannot be ignored by the historian of Russian politics.

Idioms constitute one of the most interesting and fascinating linguistic phenomena, the study of which continues to bring new findings from different theoretical and applied perspectives. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive approach to idiom meaning conceived as an eminently pragmatic matter with some idiosyncratic traits (Dobrovol'skij & Piirainen, 2005; Timofeeva-Timofeev, 2012). For this reason, the focus adopted is a metalinguistic reflection (Verschueren, 1999; 2000) on the communicative role of idioms. This general framework leads us to propose a two-level metapragmatic idiom meaning model, whose purpose is to systematically depict the discursive behavior of idioms according to their inherent semantic complexity (cfr. Telija, 1996; Timofeeva-Timofeev, 2012). Such an approach can prove useful in a variety of applied fields including, amongst others, translation studies, foreign language learning and teaching, figurative language acquisition and clinical linguistics. This paper is part of the ongoing research projects The Development of Figurative Awareness during the Primary School Period: Humor and Phraseology (FFI2016-76047-P, AEI-FEDER/EU) and Metapragmatics of Children's Humor: Acquisition, Gender Perspective and Applications (GRE14-19, University of Alicante)

Neuronal mechanisms mediating the variability of somatosensory evoked potentials during sleep oscillations in cats

The slow oscillation (SO) generated within the corticothalamic system is composed of active and silent states. The studies of response variability during active versus silent network states within thalamocortical system of human and animals provided inconsistent results. To investigate this inconsistency, we used electrophysiological recordings from the main structures of the somatosensory system in anaesthetized cats. Stimulation of the median nerve (MN) elicited cortical responses during all phases of SO. Cortical responses to stimulation of the medial lemniscus (ML) were virtually absent during silent periods. At the ventral-posterior lateral (VPL) level, ML stimuli elicited either EPSPs in isolation or EPSPs crowned by spikes, as a function of membrane potential. Response to MN stimuli elicited compound synaptic responses and spiked at any physiological level of membrane potential. The responses of dorsal column nuclei neurones to MN stimuli were of similar latency, but the latencies of antidromic responses to ML stimuli were variable. Thus, the variable conductance velocity of ascending prethalamic axons was the most likely cause of the barrages of synaptic events in VPL neurones mediating their firing at different level of the membrane potential. We conclude that the preserved ability of the somatosensory system to transmit the peripheral stimuli to the cerebral cortex during all the phases of sleep slow oscillation is based on the functional properties of the medial lemniscus and on the intrinsic properties of the thalamocortical cells. However the reduced firing ability of the cortical neurones during the silent state may contribute to impair sensory processing during sleep

Abject realism and the depiction of violence in late imperial Russian crime fiction : the case of N.P. Timofeev

    No full text
This article examines violence in ‘Prestuplenie sueveriia’ (1872) and ‘Na sovesti’ (1879) by Nikolai Timofeev. While many works of early Russian crime fiction sanitize the portrayal of violence, Timofeev takes a different approach in these novellas. His unflinching descriptions of violence employ an aesthetic of 'abject realism', a radical extension of the critical realism more typical of the late Imperial era. A reading of abject realism in Timofeev's writing extends our understanding of the variety within early Russian crime fiction and of the ways in which this particular form of realism functions and the effects that it can create.Peer reviewe

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
