A Mosaic of Words and Images. Translation and Commentary of Herta Müller's "Der Beamte sagte".
The following is a translation draft from German into Italian of the book Der Beamte sagte by the Romanian-German author Herta Müller. The main aim of this work is to highlight some problems of translation and focus on any possible solutions. Particularly, translation choices of certain stylistic elements characterizing the book of Müller, such as metaphors, are shown. The translation of the text and its commentary thus reveal the complexity of Müller’s highly poetic language and the challenges for the translator
Biologisches und politisches Leben
Biological and political life. If we think about politics in Ancient Greece, we find a distinction between the political and the biological life: the domains of polis and oikos. Compared to the present, there is an obvious difference in the overlapping of these two once clearly separated domains. Therefore, the question has to be raised why this difference emerged and how the relation between political and biological life in modern society can be described. Seeing the relation between these life forms as a development, Hobbes is a turning point: by transferring power to a sovereign, the functions of politics change – from the distribution of power to the preservation of the citizens’ life, who henceforth are not
bare resources of the state, but respectable individuals with particular interests. In addition, biology in the 18th and 19th century (e. g. Bichat) develops a new understanding of homo sapiens: the animal rationale, which was able to forge and lead institutions based upon pure reason, suddenly discovers itself as an emotional individual. In response, politics has to take the human being as a whole (his bios) into account. Darwin’s theory furthermore provoked two reactions: affirmative and negative biopolitics. As a consequence of negative biopolitics, so called „zoopolitics“ emerged, which divided mankind into a superior and an inferior group – the basis for the later „thanatopolitics“ among the national socialists in Germany. Since the Third Reich, politics has not lost its focus on the citizens’ bios – thus it is time to establish a positive biopolitics that is able to deal with the problems of our globalized world and thereby to lay the foundation for future generations
Per un teatro che crede nella storia. Pier Paolo Pasolini nell'opera di Heiner Müller
Aim of this essay is to analyse the role of Pier Paolo Pasolini in the work and poetics of the GDR-author Heiner Müller. After an analysis of the reception of Pasolini’s works and persona in Germany and in the specific context of the GDR, the current work focuses on the influence of PPP in Müller’s approach to language, identity and history

Single crystal and film growth of actinide pnictides by chemical vapour transport
Les composés obtenus sont identifiés et caractérisés par diffraction des rayons X (Debye-Scherrer, cristal tournant, Weissenberg).Single crystals and films of actinide (Th, Pa, U) pnictides (As, Sb) were prepared from the elements, by chemical vapour transport using iodine as transporting agent. In a van Arkel process, the actinide compounds were deposited on an induction-heated tungsten support. Depending on the compounds, deposition temperatures ranged from 1 000 to 2 200 °C, whereas the quartz bulb was kept at 400 to 600 °C. The deposits were identified and characterized by X-ray diffraction (Debye-Scherrer, rotating crystal, Weissenberg) methods
Arsenio Frugoni: l’incontro con Dante
The essay analyzes medieval historian Arsenio Frugoni's studies on Dante, highlighting how his encounter with the author of The Comedy is based on his previous studies on Rome in the Middle Ages, the cardinals, and the Jubilee of 1300. In Dante Frugoni sees his own spiritual tension toward a Church that in his view fails to translate the original Gospel inspiration into institutional and legal terms
Using Sensitizing Concepts in Grounded Theory Research: The Case of Cremation Practices in Western Societies
Cremation is currently the most widespread form of managing the body after death in many countries: as such, it is an expression of profound changes in the cultural and symbolic dimensions of contemporary societies. The aim of this article is twofold: the first one is to describe some of the main trends regarding the phenomenon of cremation in Western societies and, in particular, its rapid increase as a choice; the other one is to give an account on the process of constructing a qualitative research design aimed at grasping the social and cultural dynamics that are at the basis of the increasing popularity of the choice of cremation.
Starting from the field research experience that the author carried out, this essay is mainly devoted to proposing and discussing the role of some sensitizing concepts to plan and start a qualitative research process on the practice of cremation. Academic journals usually publish the results of already-concluded empirical research; however, very few articles are devoted to the initial moments of qualitative research, particularly those connected to the construction of a conceptual framework within which the subsequent empirical steps will be developed.
Two sensitizing concepts are presented as conceptual tools that are considered useful to understand the vocabulary of motives sensitizing individuals to this choice: ‘symbolic ambivalence’ and ‘identity work’. After discussing why these two concepts can be adopted as ‘sensitizing concepts’ in such an empirical endeavor, the author discusses methodological implications from these conceptual references to advance empirical processes
