Risk assessment and mitigation at Copahue Volcano

    No full text
"Risk assessment" is a relatively new concept in Argentina, since the veryfirst hazard map was only recently constructed on the basis of the 1992 eruption of Copahue volcano (Patagonia). Copahue is considered a very active volcanic system since 13 eruptive events have been recognized overthe last 260 years. Most the events are phreatic and phreato-magmatic withVEI ≤ 2; nevertheless such eruptions represent a threat for thecommunities living in the surrounding areas of the emission centre, not only because of pyroclastic flows and tephra fall (the nearby villages,Caviahue and Copahue, have so far only experienced ash fallout), but also due to the possible formation of mud flows and flank collapse triggered by the volcanic activity. Owing to the frequent eruptions of Copahue, the most recent ones (2000, 2012) showed an increasing explosive character, hazard survey actions, such as thematic maps and contingency plans areconstantly, though slowly, modified. The risk assessment described in this chapter calls for the implementation of the monitoring network in the Argentina side of the volcano, since the only currently active seismic stations (OVDAS) are located in the Chilean side of the volcanic edifice, Copahue volcano lying at the border between the two countries. Moreover, the Chilean observatory adopts criteria of alert levels, which are distinctly different with respect to those of Argentina Civil Defense, producing misleading information to the population. The villages of Copahue and Caviahue are regarded as extremely vulnerable to possible future eruptions if larger magnitude events should occur. A review of the presently available potential hazard map, an improvement of people's education about the volcanic risks and a more interactive cooperation between the Chilean and Argentina scientific and administrative institutions are some of the immediate counter measures to be taken into account before a new explosive phase at Copahue.Fil: Caselli, Alberto Tomás. A Machine Learning approach to enhance the SUPG stabilization method for advection-dominated differential problems

    No full text
We propose using machine learning and artificial neural networks (ANNs) to enhance residual-based stabilization methods for advection-dominated differential problems. Specifically, in the context of the finite element method, we consider the streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) stabilization method and we employ ANNs to optimally choose the stabilization parameter on which the method relies. We generate our dataset by solving optimization problems to find the optimal stabilization parameters that minimize the distances among the numerical and the exact solutions for different data of differential problem and the numerical settings of the finite element method, e.g., mesh size and polynomial degree. The dataset generated is used to train the ANN, and we used the latter ``online'' to predict the optimal stabilization parameter to be used in the SUPG method for any given numerical setting and problem data. We show, by means of 1D and 2D numerical tests for the advection-dominated differential problem, that our ANN approach yields more accurate solution than using the conventional stabilization parameter for the SUPG method

    Densities and excess molar volumes of the solvent (ethane-1,2-diol + 2-methoxyethanol + water) from T = 263.15 K to T = 353.15 K

Densities rho are reported for {ethane-1,2-diol (1) + 2-methoxyethanol (2) + water (3)} at 19 temperatures ranging from T = (263.15 to 353.15)K on 36 ternaries of different mole fractions covering the whole miscibility field 0 < x(1)/x(2)/x(3) < 1. The experimental data have been used to test some empirical equations expressing the functions rho = rho(T) and rho = rho(x(1), x(2), x(3)), and the excess molar volumes V-E have been derived and used to investigate the presence of three component stable adducts in these mixtures

Orizzonti mantovani. Spunti e dinamiche paesaggistiche ne L'Illustrissimo di Alberto Cantoni

    No full text
In the literary production of Alberto Cantoni, short story writer and novelist between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the novel L'Illustrissimo is highly important both because it is the last publication of the author, from Pomponesco, a small town a few kilometers south of Mantua, both because it summarizes in a single text the different nuances and different directions that his writing has taken over the course of his literary career, also due to a writing and processing time that embraces the entire span of years of his career itself. In the foreground, in addition to the numerous and brilliant characters, one of the protagonists is the Mantuan landscape which, not a simple background, becomes a true literary parameter which in different and significant ways affects the purposes and mechanisms of the novel

Geochemistry of the magmatic-hydrothermal fluid reservoir of Copahue volcano (Argentina): insights from the chemical and isotopic features of fumarolic discharges

    No full text
This study present the chemical (inorganic and organic) and isotopic compositions (d13C-CO2, d15N, 3He/4He, 40Ar/36Ar, d13C-CH4, dD-CH4, and dD-H2O and d18O-H2O) of gases from fluid discharges located at the foot of Copahue volcano. Gas samples were collected during 6 campaigns carried out from 1976 to 2012. Gas composition is typical of hydrothermal fluids from volcanic areas, since it consists of dominant CO2 and relatively high concentrations of H2S, H2, CH4 and N2. The isotopic ratios of He are the highest observed for a Southern American volcano to date (R/Ra up to 7.94). This feature is not common for gases from a classic arc-like setting, and is possibly related to an extensional regime subdued to asthenospheric thinning. The CO2/3He ratios (from 1.4 to 8.8×109) slightly exceeding that of MORB gases, and the d15N values (+5.3 to +5.5 ? vs. air) point to an occurrence of an additional crustal source for CO2 and N2. Gas discharges of the northern sector of the volcanic edifice are likely produced by mixing of hydrothermal gases with fluids from a shallow source permeating through local fault systems. Gas geothermometry based on chemical reactions characterized by slow kinetics, such as those involving the CO2-CH4 redox pair, are quenched at temperatures (~260 °C) and redox conditions [log(XH2/XH2O) = -2.8)] consistent with those measured in the goethermal wells. On the contrary, the C3H6-C3H8 pair, H2 and CO tend to re-adjust at decreasing temperatures and more oxidizing conditions [log(XH2/XH2O) ≤ -3.4] in the uprising vapor phase. The hydrothermal reservoir is mainly recharged by meteoric water whose isotopic signature is modified by water-rock interactions. The N2/He ratios measured in 2006-2007 were significantly lower than those of 2012, possibly due to variations of N2-bearing species in sediments interacting with the magmatic source. Considering that the R/Ra values of the 2006-2007 period were significantly higher than those measured in 2012, such compositional variation may also be explained by the injection of fresh N2and 3He-rich magma that triggered the 2000 eruption. This hypothesis, although speculative since no geochemical data of fumaroles are available from 1997 to 2006, implies that a geochemical monitoring of inert gas compounds discharged from the hydrothermal emissions could be used to detect the occurrence at depth of injections of new magma batches.Fil: Tassi, Franco. The pretension of this work entitled O duplo significado do sentir e do pensar nas obras de Alberto Caeiro e Descartes is to investigate the relationship between the feeling and the pure thinking, using as reference the poetry O Guardador de Rebanhos, by Alberto Caeiro, that presents in an evident way this theme; and as this subject is treated in René Descartes' Metaphysical Meditations, also in a clearly visible way. It is possible to notice in both authors, the diplopy, a sort of double look about the relationship between feeling and pure thinking. The thesis about Descartes'double look regarding the relation of feeling and pure thinking, in Merleau-Ponty reading, pointing out the nature vision, will be treated in the first chapter. In the second chapter, I start from the reading of the first three Metaphysical Meditations to characterize the tension that can be verified between Descartes and Alberto Caeiro when they refer to the pure thinking. Descartes' main focus in the first three Meditations is pure thinking and, in this point, Alberto Caeiro criticizes pure thinking. In the third chapter, analyzing the last three Meditations, it is possible to notice that there is an alteration in Descartes' thought, in which the author inverts his point of view, approaching of Alberto Caeiro's idea. In the fourth chapter, I will show the reading that other authors do concerning feeling and thinking in Alberto Caeiro's work, showing that as well as Descartes, this also shows a diplopy, not of feeling, but of thinking

Lobbying for change as a new theory and practice of active citizenship: author interview with Alberto Alemanno

    No full text
Do you believe that lobbying is a vehicle for representing the interests of some rather than all, meaning its actors can never be a force for good? Alberto Alemanno, author of Lobbying for Change: Find Your Voice to Create a Better Society, might convince you of the contrary. This interview with Barbara Aubin, LSE Public Affairs, reflects on the importance of engaging with our political representatives, holding them accountable and lobbying for the causes we deeply care about as fundamental elements of a healthy democracy

Check-up methodology of information systems in manufacturing SMEs

    No full text
Italian companies’ expenditure in Information Systems (IS) is lower than in other industrialized countries; this is due to a complex mix of factors, mainly related to a cultural deficiency. The lack of investment and expenditure in IS, especially within Italian SMEs, can be considered a relevant factor in explaining the sharp decrease of Italian competitiveness on international markets in the last 5-10 years. Aim of this paper is to present the IS Check-up Methodology developed at the INF-OS research centre; the main scope of this methodology the management IS within manufacturing SMEs, that is investigated with a twofold purpose: (i) at a general level, identifying and measuring the relations among the endogenous/exogenous factors, the IS choices and the results achieved; (ii) at a single firm level, supporting the analysed SMEs by supplying evidence on their IS policies’ strengths and weaknesses, in order to address new and more effective IS investments
