    Personal, Social and Moral Development

    No full text
This chapter will consider views of self-concept, self-esteem and identity in relation to self development through childhood and adolesence. The importance of social interactions such as teacher-student relationships, student-student relationships and parent-student relationships will also be discussed. Peer relationships are significant in a child's life as they impact on social, moral and emotional development. Through developing positive relationships, young people define their roles and status in relation to others. Interaction with other people provides opportunities to learn social skills and develop sensitivity to what matters to others. Through negative interactions, however, feelings of loneliness, anxiety and the potential for future problems like dropping out of school can occur. Teachers have a role in helping young people develop a positive sense of self and in providing opportunities for positive social, moral and emotional development

    Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students

    No full text
There is no single phrase to describe students who are culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD). Indeed, there are many different definitions that describe culture; most definitions include such features as the knowledge, rules, traditions, beliefs and values that guide a particular group. The group can defined along religious, ethnic, racial, gender, social class or other criteria. Every individual is a member of many different groups and so is influenced by many different cultures. This chapter will explore the impact of culture on students described as CALD in relation to their schooling in Australia. Included in this group will be students who have English as a second (or third or fourth) language and Indigenous Australian students

    Effective teaching practices

    No full text
In this chapter we will focus on teaching practices. We will examine how effective teachers establish clear learning goals for their students and how they link these goals to appropriate teaching strategies or activities. Planning for teaching is an important first step. Many new teachers can feel overwhelmed by the amount of preparation that is required to make teaching appear to be effortless. Developing good planning strategies is essential to good teaching. Essential teaching skills for effective teaching are described, including the need to develop good communication skills between teacher and students so that students know and understand what is expected of them. Included in this chapter is a focus on the effectiveness of using ICTs as a resource for effective instruction. This chapter will also describe evidence based practice as an evaluation process for teaching and learning. Evidence based practice ensures that teachers have considered a variety of sources from which to make important teaching and learning decisions

    No full text
Kata kunci : Transformator daya , tahanan isolasi ABSTRACT Power transformers are the main equipment in electric power systems that are directly related to electricity transmission and distribution systems. One of the most important parts of a power transformer is its isolation system. Along with the age and operation of the isolation conditions can experience deterioration which can cause operation failure and damage to the transformer. The purpose of this study is to determine the condition of the quality of insulation resistance on power transformers. The method in this study in the form of a literature study is used by researchers to deepen the material related to the title of research and data collection in North Bandung Substation. The data taken is in the form of polarization index and delta tangent test results. After the data is collected, the calculation and analysis are carried out to get better results. In testing the Polarization Index on sekundary-tertiary testing experienced a decrease in IP of 0.77 by showing a value of 2.1 to 1.3 this indicates that the transformer is in a poor condition and in one of the delta test there is an unfavorable result or deterioration by getting a value> 1.0 i in testing delta C C TH + C TG it can be caused due to contamination or leakage current in the isolation of the transformer winding, so it needs further investigation to avoid deterioration in other tests. Key Word : Transformer, isolation resistance, polarization index, delta tangen

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Investigations into the molecular effects of single nucleotide polymorphism

    No full text
Objectives: DNA sequences are very rich in short repeats and their pattern can be altered by point mutations. We wanted to investigate the effect of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) on the pattern of short DNA repeats and its biological consequences. Methods: Analysis of the pattern of short DNA repeats of the Thy-1 sequence with and without SNP. Searching for DNA-binding factors in any region of significance. Results: Comparing the pattern of short repeats in the Thy-1 gene sequences of Turkish patients with ataxia telangiectasia (AT) with the `wild type' sequence from the DNA database, we identified a missing 8-bp repeat element due to an SNP in position 1271 (intron II) in AT-DNA sequences. Only the mutated sequence had the potential for the formation of a stem loop in DNA or pre-mRNA. In super-shift experiments we found that DNA oligomers covering the area of this SNP formed a complex with proteins amongst which we identified the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) protein. Conclusion: SNPs have the potential to alter DNA or pre-mRNA conformation. Although no SNP-depeding formation of the DNA-protein complex was evident, future investigations could reveal differential molecular mechanisms of cellular regulation. Copyright (C) 2001 S. Ophthalmology. 2005 Feb;112(2):208-18; discussion 219. Mitomycin C modulation of corneal wound healing after photorefractive keratectomy in highly myopic eyes. Gambato C, Ghirlando A, Moretto E, Busato F, Midena E. SourceRefractive Surgery Service and Antimetabolite Therapy Research Unit, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Padova, Padova, Italy. Abstract PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of topical mitomycin C in corneal wound healing (CWH) after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in highly myopic eyes. DESIGN: Prospective, double-masked, randomized clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-two eyes of 36 patients affected by high (>7 diopters) myopia. METHODS: In each patient, one eye was randomly assigned to PRK with intraoperative topical 0.02% mitomycin C application, and the fellow eye was treated with a placebo. Postoperatively, mitomycin C-treated eyes received artificial tears (3 times daily, tapered in 3 months), whereas the fellow eye was treated with fluorometholone sodium 2% and artificial tears (3 times daily, tapered in 3 months). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity, manifest refraction, and biomicroscopy. Contrast sensitivity was determined using the Pelli-Robson chart. Corneal confocal microscopy documented CWH. RESULTS: Mean follow-up was 18 months (range, 12-36). No side effects or toxic effects were documented. At 12-month follow-up examination, UCVAs (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution) were 0.4+/-0.48 and 0.5+/-0.53 (P = .03) in mitomycin C-treated eyes and corticosteroid-treated eyes, respectively. At 1 year, corneal haze developed in 20% of corticosteroid-treated eyes, versus 0% of mitomycin C-treated eyes. At 12, 24, and 36 months, corneal confocal microscopy showed activated keratocytes and extracellular matrix significantly more evident in untreated eyes (Ps = 0.004, 0.024, and 0.046, respectively). CONCLUSION: Topical intraoperative application of 0.02% mitomycin C can reduce haze formation in highly myopic eyes undergoing PRK. Comment in Ophthalmology. 2006 Feb;113(2):357; author reply 357-8
