    Service-oriented design: The roots

    Service-Oriented Design has driven the development of telecommunication infrastructure and applications, in particular the so-called Intelligent Network (IN) Services, since the early 90s. A service-oriented, feature-based architecture, a corresponding standardization of basic services and applications in real standards, and adequate programming environments enabled flexibilization of services, and dramatically reduced the time to market. Today the current trend toward triple-play services, which blend voice, video, and data on broadband wireline and wireless services builds on this successful experience when reaching for new technological and operational challenges. In this paper, we review our 10 years of experience in service engineering for telecommunication systems from the point of view of Service-Oriented Design then and now

    The charge-parity (CP) structure of the Yukawa interaction between the Higgs (H) boson and the top quark is measured in a data sample enriched in the ttH and tH associated production, using 138 fb1^{-1} of data collected in proton-proton collisions at s=\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The study targets events where the H boson decays via H \to WW or H ττ\to\tau\tau and the top quarks decay via t \to Wb: the W bosons decay either leptonically or hadronically, and final states characterized by the presence of at least two leptons are studied. Machine learning techniques are applied to these final states to enhance the separation of CP-even from CP-odd scenarios. Two-dimensional confidence regions are set on κt{\kappa_{\mathrm{t}}} and κ~t{\tilde{\kappa}_{\mathrm{t}}}, which are respectively defined as the CP-even and CP-odd top-Higgs Yukawa coupling modifiers. No significant fractional CP-odd contributions, parameterized by the quantity fCPHtt{|{f_{\mathrm{CP}}^{\mathrm{H}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{t}}}|} are observed; the parameter is determined to be fCPHtt={|{f_{\mathrm{CP}}^{\mathrm{H}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{t}}}|} = 0.59 with an interval of (0.24, 0.81) at 68% confidence level.     A measurement of the top quark pole mass mtpole {m}_{\textrm{t}}^{\textrm{pole}} in events where a top quark-antiquark pair (tt \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} ) is produced in association with at least one additional jet (tt \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} +jet) is presented. This analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data at s \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb1^{−1}. Events with two opposite-sign leptons in the final state (e+^{+}e^{−}, μ+^{+}μ^{−}, e±^{±}μ^{∓}) are analyzed. The reconstruction of the main observable and the event classification are optimized using multivariate analysis techniques based on machine learning. The production cross section is measured as a function of the inverse of the invariant mass of the tt \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} +jet system at the parton level using a maximum likelihood unfolding. Given a reference parton distribution function (PDF), the top quark pole mass is extracted using the theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order. For the ABMP16NLO PDF, this results in mtpole {m}_{\textrm{t}}^{\textrm{pole}} = 172.93 ± 1.36 GeV.[graphic not available: see fulltext

    Measurements of inclusive and normalized differential cross sections of the associated production of top quark-antiquark and bottom quark-antiquark pairs, ttˉbbˉ {\mathrm{t}\bar{\mathrm{t}}} \mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}} , are presented. The results are based on data from proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb1 ^{-1} . The cross sections are measured in the lepton+jets decay channel of the top quark pair, using events containing exactly one isolated electron or muon and at least five jets. Measurements are made in four fiducial phase space regions, targeting different aspects of the ttˉbbˉ {\mathrm{t}\bar{\mathrm{t}}} \mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}} process. Distributions are unfolded to the particle level through maximum likelihood fits, and compared with predictions from several event generators. The inclusive cross section measurements of this process in the fiducial phase space regions are the most precise to date. In most cases, the measured inclusive cross sections exceed the predictions with the chosen generator settings. The only exception is when using a particular choice of dynamic renormalization scale, μR=12i=t,tˉ,b,bˉmT,i1/4 {\mu_{\mathrm{R}}=\frac12 \prod_{i=\mathrm{t},\bar{\mathrm{t}},\mathrm{b},\bar{\mathrm{b}}} m_{\mathrm{T},i}^{1/4}} , where mT,i2=mi2+pT,i2 {m_{\mathrm{T},i}^2=m_i^2+p_{\mathrm{T},i}^2} are the transverse masses of top and bottom quarks.     Measurements of inclusive and normalized differential cross sections of the associated production of top quark-antiquark and bottom quark-antiquark pairs, ttbb, are presented. The results are based on data from proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb1^{-1}. The cross sections are measured in the lepton+jets decay channel of the top quark pair, using events containing exactly one isolated electron or muon and at least five jets. Measurements are made in four fiducial phase space regions, targeting different aspects of the ttbb process. Distributions are unfolded to the particle level through maximum likelihood fits, and compared with predictions from several event generators. The inclusive cross section measurements of this process in the fiducial phase space regions are the most precise to date. In most cases, the measured inclusive cross sections exceed the predictions with the chosen generator settings. The only exception is when using a particular choice of dynamic renormalization scale, μR=12i=t,tˉ,b,bˉmT,i1/4\mu_\mathrm{R}=\frac{1}{2} \prod_{i=\mathrm{t, \bar{t}, b, \bar{b}}} m_{\mathrm{T},i}^{1/4}, where mT,i2=mi2+pT,i2m_{\mathrm{T},i}^2=m_i^2+p^2_{\mathrm{T},i} are the transverse masses of top and bottom quarks. The differential cross sections show varying degrees of compatibility with the theoretical predictions, and none of the tested generators with the chosen settings simultaneously describe all the measured distributions

    Two-particle azimuthal correlations in γp interactions using pPb collisions at √s_NN=8.16 TeV

    The first measurements of the Fourier coefficients (V-n Delta) of the azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons emitted from photon-proton (gamma p) interactions are presented. The data are extracted from 68.8nb(-1) of ultra-peripheral proton-lead (pPb) collisions at root s(NN)= 8.16 TeV using the CMS detector. The high energy lead ions produce a flux of photons that can interact with the oncoming proton. This gamma p system provides a set of unique initial conditions with multiplicity lower than in photon-lead collisions but comparable to recent electron-positron and electron-proton data. The V-n Delta coefficients are presented in ranges of event multiplicity and transverse momentum (p(T)) and are compared to corresponding hadronic minimum bias pPb results. For a given multiplicity range, the mean p(T) of charged particles is smaller in gamma p than in pPb collisions. For both the gamma p and pPb samples, V-1 Delta is negative, V-2 Delta is positive, and V-3 Delta consistent with 0. For each multiplicity and p(T) range, V-2 Delta is larger for gamma p events.
