First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Disease Models & Mechanisms, helping researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Ateequllah Hayat is first author on ‘ Low HER2 expression in normal breast epithelium enables dedifferentiation and malignant transformation via chromatin opening’, published in DMM. Ateequllah conducted the research described in this article while a PhD student in Gabriella Ficz's lab at Queen Mary University of London, London, UK, and is now a lecturer in drug development at St George's, University of London, London, UK, investigating transcriptomic/epigenomic changes in cancer resistance

"To my brothers in the west . . .": A thematic analysis of videos produced by the Islamic State’s al-Hayat Media Center

    No full text
This study examines videos produced by the al-Hayat Media Center, a branch of the Islamic State’s (IS) larger media campaign aimed more specifically at Western audiences. Using a thematic analysis approach, recurring themes of 10 al-Hayat videos were identified with conclusions made regarding the specificities of the message and the target audience. It was found that al-Hayat videos cater to potential Western recruits and sympathizers by portraying life in the IS as spiritually and existentially fulfilling, while simultaneously decrying the West as secular, immoral, and criminal. By utilizing well-produced propaganda videos that tap into the dissatisfactions of Western Muslims, al-Hayat was shown to deliver a sophisticated and legitimate message that may play a role in the larger radicalization process.Peer reviewedFinal article publishedIslamic Stateal-Hayat Media Centerpropagandaradicalizatio

The Effect of Mechanical Load-induced Intraosseous Pressure Gradients on Bone Remodeling

    No full text
It is well established that changes in bone blood and interstitial fluid flows are associated with changes in the bone remodeling process. These flows in bone are a result not only of trans-cortical pressure gradients produced by vascular and hydro-static pressure, but also of mechanical loadings. Mechanical load-induced intraosseous pressure gradients may result in some fluid stimuli effects which, in turn, may enable bone cells to detect external mechanical signals. In this paper, the exploitation of a 2D continuum model based on classical poroelasticity is presented within a variational framework. The investigation is aimed at describing how mechanical actions can affect the remodeling process of a bone tissue. The focus is on the introduction of a physically motivated strain energy contribution aimed to take into account the presence of saturating fluid in the interconnected pores of bone tissue. The interaction with a bio-resorbable organic ceramic material like those used in bone graft implants is also considered in presented model. Numerical results are provided in a relevant exemplary case

Media metrics : how Arab and Western media construct success and failure in the ‘Global War on Terror’

    No full text
The media has played an important role in the ‘Global War on Terror’, and has received significant scholarly attention as a result. However, the way in which different media represent and construct notions of success and failure has been less well examined. In addressing this gap, this article offers a comparative analysis of several hundred media sources drawn from Western and English language Arab press outlets, published up until the turn of the decade. Through this analysis, the paper examines the way in which different sources understand progress and regress in the conflict. The themes that emerge from this corpus suggest, not only that the two sets of sources demonstrate different conceptualisations of success and failure, but more interestingly, that through construction of specific metrics, they betray very different understandings about the nature of the conflict itself. In turn this constructs quite different interpretations of what ‘winning’ the ‘Global War on Terror’ might mean for the protagonists. In a largely consistent interpretation of the GWOT, Arab media interpret the conflict through the lens of American efforts to assert power and influence on a global stage. Western media metrics, on the other hand, evolve from a largely militaristic confrontation, to an ideological conflict, and finally constructing the GWOT as a global effort to bring down a movement. Notably, according to both Arab and Western measures, the media sources examined here suggest America is losing.Peer reviewe
