Sanctuaries in roman dacia: materiality and religious experience Archaeopress Roman archaeology ;, 49./ Csaba Szabó

    No full text
Text in English ; summary in Hungarian.Includes bibliographical references. This book is the first comprehensive work focusing on lived ancient religious communication in Roman Dacia. Testing for the first time the ?Lived Ancient Religion? approach in terms of a peripheral province from the Danubian area, this work looks at the role of ?sacralised? spaces, known commonly as sanctuaries in the religious communication of the province. 0The author analyses the role of space sacralisation, religious appropriation, embodiment and the social impact of religious communication in urban contexts (Apulum), military contexts (Porolissum and Mehadia), and numerous examples from rural (non-urban) environments (Ampelum, Germisara, Ad Mediam, and many others). The book concentrates not only on the creation and maintenance of sacralised spaces in public and secondary locations, but also on their role at the micro-level of objects, semi-micro level of spaces (settlements), and the macro-level of the province and the Danubian region as a whole. Innovatively as regards provincial archaeological research, this book emphasises the spatial aspects of lived ancient religion by analysing for the first time the sanctuaries as spaces of religious communication in Dacia. The work also contains a significant chapter on the so-called ?small-group? religions (the Bacchic, Mithraic and Dolichenian groups of the province), which are approached for the first time in detail. The study also gives the first comprehensive list of archaeologically-epigraphically- attested, and presumed sacralised spaces within Dacia.1 online resource (viii, 242 pages

About diet of Vipera ursinii (Bonaparte, 1835) in a central Apennine grassland landscape: what do they eat when orthoptera are not present?

    No full text
Abstract: In this ecological study, the researchers applied themselves to understanding the diet of Vipera ursinii. This viper has a very short period of activity and has a fragmented range; it frequents similar habitats but at different altitudes. In view of its Italian distribution, this study dealt with mountain populations that frequent primary pastures above the forest line, from 1600 to 1850 m a.s.l. At these altitudes and latitudes, the snake is known as a large consumer of meadow orthoptera. The present work was carried out in the Apennines (central Italy), the subjects studied were handled and divided between juveniles and adults. The diet of this snake has never been studied in the areas covered by the following population, so the metapopulation in question is new data. The aim of the research is to identify and analyze the diet of Vipera ursinii even in a period of non-population of orthoptera using methods already in use. Observation of regurgitated material or faecal droppings obtained by non-invasive ventral palpation were the components that led the researchers to unprecedented conclusions for both the species and the snake group: the presence in the diet of new taxa such as ants, slug and caterpillar. This new knowledge may give a new perspective on this taxon that is potentially vulnerable to environmental changes due to environmental thermal alteration phenomena

Dietary Shift in a Barn Owl (Tyto alba) Population Following Partial Abandonment of Cultivated Fields (Central Apennine Hills, Italy)

    No full text
While most studies focused on the impact of intensive agriculture on the barn owl’s diet, little is known about the effect of cropland abandonment. We compared the taxon composition/evenness and feeding guild structure of small mammal prey identified in pellets collected before (2004) and after (2012) the abandonment of 9% of cultivated fields within a cultural landscape. Data on prey abundance per pellet were analysed through non-metric multidimensional scaling and permutational, paired tests. Prey taxon evenness in 2012 was significantly lower than in 2004. That induced a shift in prey taxon composition as indicated by the significantly lower dietary similarity compared with the random expectation. The increasing and declining abundance of Murinae and Crocidurinae, respectively, had the largest contribution to the differentiation of the diet spectrum. Insectivorous prey was significantly more abundant in 2004 compared to 2012, while the opposite was true for omnivorous prey. Our results suggest that even a small fraction of abandoned crops in the landscape might induce a detectable shift in the barn owl’s food niche. The dietary effects are similar to those observed after agricultural intensification, that is, an increase in the abundance of generalists to the detriment of specialist mammal prey

Cyclic mu-opioid receptor ligands containing multiple N-methylated amino acid residues

    No full text
In this study we report the in vitro activities of four cyclic opioid peptides with various sequence length/macrocycle size and N-methylamino acid residue content. N-Methylated amino acids were incorporated and cyclization was employed to enhance conformational rigidity to various extent. The effect of such modifications on ligand structure and binding properties were studied. The pentapeptide containing one endocyclic and one exocyclic N-methylated amino acid displayed the highest affinity to the mu-opioid receptor. This peptide was also shown to be a full agonist, while the other analogs failed to activate the mu opioid receptor. Results of molecular docking studies provided rationale for the explanation of binding properties on a structural basis

Multiphase inclusions in peritectic garnet from granulites of the Athabasca granulite terrane (Canada): Evidence of carbon recycling during Neoarchean crustal melting

    No full text
In the last decade, the study of fluid and melt inclusions in partially melted rocks has become a key tool to acquire unprecedented information about crustal anatectic processes. In this study we report the results of the microstructural and microchemical investigation on multiphase inclusions trapped within peritectic garnet of a Neoarchean felsic granulite from the Upper Deck domain of the Athabasca granulite terrane, Canada. Inclusions have been studied by SEM-EDS, FIB-SEM serial sectioning and Raman microspectroscopy, and classified in terms of size and hosted phases. Type I multiphase inclusions are small (≤15 μm), primary in origin, and do not show evidence of decrepitation. Their multiphase assemblage is made of ferroan magnesite, quartz and graphite in association with minor amounts of corundum, pyrophyllite and Zn-spinel. Calcite, dolomite and zinc-bearing sulphide may also be present. The coexistence of quartz and corundum in these inclusions is interpreted as the product of metastable growth within pores of extremely small size. The fluid phase of Type I inclusions, always present in amounts >40 vol%, is CO2-rich (96.5 mol%) with traces of N2 (3.3 mol%) and CH4 (0.2 mol%). These carbon-rich Type I inclusions coexist in the same cluster with primary melt inclusions (nanogranitoids; Type II). These are large (up to 50 μm) and composed of K-feldspar, quartz and plagioclase with minor amounts of graphite, biotite and aluminosilicate. Because nanogranitoids are droplets of anatectic silicate melt formed and trapped during incongruent melting of crustal rocks, the coexistence of Type I multiphase inclusions proves the presence of a carbon-rich fluid during the Neoarchean anatexis (800–950 °C, 0.6–1.4 GPa) of this portion of continental crust, in a likely situation of melt/fluid immiscibility. According to phase equilibria modelling, the uncommon multiphase assemblage within Type I inclusions is here interpreted as the result of a post-entrapment carbonation reaction between an original CO2-bearing fluid and the garnet host during rock cooling from UHT conditions

Professor Dr. Flórián Tremmel, an acknowledged Hungarian scholar of criminal law, paints and writes maqamat in his leisure time. The above-mentioned rhymed prose excellently expresses Flórián Tremmels vocation, even affection for education and science. His adherents call him simple Master. Csaba Fenyvesi, who envisions himself as a follower of professor Tremmel, considers the quartet of knowledge, affection, humour and order as the Master’s Ars Poetica. Professor Fenyvesi means that these four key words ‘…can serve as guidelines in the activity of a law scholar, and so of the celebrated person, in his activity, mental conception, charisma, and what can be formulated - perhaps not exaggerating – also as an Ars Poetica for a law scholar, a school creating real Master.’ Flórián Tremmel was born in Szombathely in 1941. He took his A-levels in the Premonstratensian secondary School „Nagy Lajos” in Szombathely and received his diploma at the Faculty of Law of the University of Pécs with the grade ‘summa cum laude’. After his certification he became first trainee then assistant lecturer and assistant professor at the Faculty of Procedural Law. In 1982, after defence of his dissertation in the topic civil suit, he became candidate. From 1991 he was appointed as leader of the Chair for Criminal Procedural Law. A fent idézett rímes próza jól kifejezi Tremmel Flóriánnak az oktatás, a tudomány iránti mérhetetlen elhivatottságát, mi több, szeretetét. Követői egyszerűen Mesternek hívták. Fenyvesi Csaba, aki Tremmel professzor tanítványának tartja magát, a Mester ars poeticáját a tudás, a szeretet, a humor és a rend kvartettjében látja. The Effect of Poppy Oil on Egg Production and Calcium Metabolism in Japanese Quail

    No full text
Consumers tend to favor natural dietary supplements to improve their health. However, vendors rarely cite scientific evidence to justify these claims. In the case of poppy oil, it is often mentioned as having a positive effect on Ca metabolism-related disorders, but no proof has been provided. Therefore, the aim of our trial was to test the possible effect of poppy oil on calcium metabolism using Japanese quail layers as a model animal. A total of 120 four-week-old quail were divided into three dietary treatments (four cages per treatment, with ten birds in each cage): a control group (using sunflower oil as the energy source in the diet), 0.5%, and 1% poppy oil supplementation (replacing sunflower oil). Egg production, eggshell thickness, eggshell strength, and egg yolk color were investigated. Ca retention was determined using the acid-insoluble ash method. At the end of the experiment, two birds per cage were sacrificed, and uterus and jejunum samples were collected for gene expression analyses. Poppy oil supplementation improved egg production in terms of intensity, egg weight, and eggmass production. The thickness and eggshell strength decreased when 1% poppy oil was fed to the animals, while Ca retention improved. Poppy oil supplementation increased the expression of Ca transporter genes (CALB1, SLC8A1, and SLC26A9) in the uterus and ITPR1 in the jejunum. Our results indicate a possible effect of poppy oil on Ca metabolism. Further studies are needed to identify the active compound and to understand the mode of action

Studio di inclusioni policristalline in granati di granuliti dell'Athabasca Granulite Terrane (Canada)

    No full text
Fluid inclusions in minerals represent an important tool to investigate the processes involved in the petrogenesis of rocks, including the fluid-rock-melt interactions during anataxis. In this work a detailed microstructural and microchemical study has been performed on polycrystalline inclusions trapped in peritectic garnets of felsic granulite gneisses from the Upper Deck domain, Athabasca Granulite Terrane (Canada). Inclusions have been characterized by SEM-EDS and FIB-SEM techniques, and by Raman spectroscopy. These inclusions are very small (≤ 10 μm), they are primary and do not show evidences of decrepitation. FIB-SEM analyses permitted to recognise the main crystalline phases and their distribution. Their polycrystalline assemblage is always made of ferroan magnesite, quartz and graphite, in association with minor amounts of corundum and Zn-spinel. Calcite and dolomite may be present, and pyrophyllite was found only in one inclusion. Quartz and corundum coexistence has been interpreted as the product of metastability. Raman spectroscopy revealed the presence of CO2, with traces of CH4 and N2. A good negative correlation between the CO2 density and the total amount of coexisting solid phases has been observed. The main minerals occur in a relatively constant amount in the investigated inclusions, suggesting the entrapment of a compositionally homogeneous fluid characterized by a high-carbon content. These tiny carbon-rich inclusions coexist in the same cluster with nanogranite inclusions. Because nanogranites are interpreted to be droplet of anatectic melt formed and trapped during incongruent melting of crustal rocks, the investigated polycrystalline inclusions prove the presence of a carbon-rich fluid during melting of these rocks, possibly in a situation of melt/melt or melt/fluid immiscibility. Additional melting experiments are needed to better constrain the nature of former fluid.ope
