How Undergraduate Students Capture English Impromptu Speech Challenge

The practice of giving a speech or presentation in front of the class is a big challenge for students in English education majors. Students feel unable to speak directly or impromptu in English speech lectures. Thus, this study aimed to find out what were the problem factors that hinder students from practicing impromptu speech in classes. Samples in this study were the fifth-semester students in the academic year 2022/2023 majoring in English education at the University of Muhammadiyah Palembang. The study was qualitative and quantitative with a mixed-method approach. The research design utilized was a descriptive approach. The instruments used in this study were questionnaires and interviews. Twenty samples of students responded to the questionnaires and 12 of them were selected for further interview. Results of the interview and questionnaire showed most students did not have the confidence to give an impromptu English speech in the public because of the anxiety factor. Students were shocked and unable to think properly when presenting the speech without preparation. Therefore, students were hard to develop words into sentences, even the prepared sentences were lost as a result of that anxiety

Study while working has several effects in advanced higher education. Working and studying at the same time in university can be as reward and stressful. Thus, language learning strategies for working students and non-working students play an important role in the effectiveness and efficiency of English language learning. The researchers examined whether or not there is significant differences of English language learning strategies used by working and non-working students. Quantitative descriptive study was used to describe the findings. The result showed that working students applied memory strategies dominantly. The number average mean score of memory strategy was 4.02 in the category of high, where compensation learning strategies was 2.77 that categorized the lowest mean average. Non-working students applied all learning strategies at the medium level category. The highest number of mean average of language learning strategies was cognitive strategies with the average mean was 3.11. Total number mean average of metacognitive and affective strategies was the same 2.79. Compensation, memory, and social strategy were also in the medium category with different total numbers average. The mean average of compensation strategies was 3.01, memory strategy was 2.93, and social strategy was 2.75. Keywords:  English Language, Learning Strategy, Status, Category, Undergraduat

From Corrective to Collaborative: Understanding Feedback Practices of Indonesian English Lecturers

This study aims to investigate how Indonesian university lecturers provide feedback to students, the emotions and challenges they encounter, and the influence of culture and university regulations on feedback practices.  The study employed a narrative inquiry approach, which entails listening to participants\u27 stories and documenting their accounts verbatim.  The research is conducted at four different universities in Indonesia, including both prominent institutions in the capital and smaller universities in lesser-known towns, to get a diverse range of data.  Four lecturers contributed to this research, each originating from diverse locations and educational backgrounds. The data was collected through individual interviews, during which the lecturers were asked several questions on their lives and experiences in providing feedback to their students. Thematic analysis was employed to examine the data. The findings indicate that feedback serves not just to rectify grammatical errors or inaccuracies in the paper but also to enhance the interpersonal relationship between lecturer and student.  The trust, caring, and culture derived from a school or nation have a significant impact.  This study demonstrates that feedback is complex, influenced by the lecturer\u27s identity, the student\u27s emotional state, and the institutional regulations.  The outcome provides novel insights into feedback literacy from the perspective of educators.

This study discusses about the influence of applying Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) and learning motivation towards the students’ writing interest on descriptive text at SMP Negeri 1 Sembawa. Pictures are just a medium to draw students\u27 interest. Strategy is needed to make the understanding of the material come to students easier. Visual materials have main function to help create a situation become interesting in language lesson. There is comprehension and intuition of students with varying interpretations that can be built. PWIM is a strategy which allows the students to use their imagination to make sentences based on the words/phrases provided in the picture. The pictures used are associated with words describing familiar objects and the student find words out. The words will help the students to have idea in writing sentences while seeing the picture associated with words/phrases. Interest is being one of the important factors in order to increase the students’ comprehension achievement in writing

Indonesian EFL Learners' Refusal: Refusal-Speech Act Specific Motivation on Refusal Realization

Knowing how to produce speech act especially refusal appropriately is necessary since it is known as ‘face-threatening’ act, otherwise it would lead to discomfort between interlocutors. This ability may be influenced by many factors, one of which is motivation. One of the pragmatic motivation types is Speech Act Specific Motivation (SASM), which was found to have explanatory power to predict production of a certain speech act. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between learners’ refusal-SASM and their refusal. The subject was the students of English Education Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang. Discourse Completion Task (DCT) and refusal-SASM questionnaire were used in collecting the data needed. The results showed that the correlation between the two variables was insignificant, the refusal-SASM contributed only 3% towards the learners’ refusal. The recent study also found that the leaners tended to use indirect strategy in refusing to almost all situations. The reason of this phenomenon is likely to be the influence of L1 culture. However, further studies are highly suggested in this matter

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    PRAGMATIC TRANSFER IN REQUEST REALIZATIONS

This study investigates the pragmatic transfer in English request realizations made by EFL learners, i.e. the proficient learners. The subjects were students of an English Study Program who obtained TOEFL-like scores of at least 450. The data were collected by means of DCT-questionnaires and Role-plays. The results show that the subjects realize requests in the form of external modifications more frequently. Most of them embed their requests with supportive moves dominantly. They enfold the acts with the moves before, after or in both positions. Of the three positions, they mostly insert the moves initial position, i.e.,through inductive patterns. This is due to pragmatic transfer

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
