Galal Amin was an economics professor the American University in Cairo from the late 1970s through the early 2000s, in addition to being a renowned Egyptian public intellectual, author, and columnist. He describes his father, a prominent academic, and outlines his own early education and life as a graduate student in London, and early career as an economist in Kuwait. He mentions early teaching stints at AUC starting in 1967, contrasting the social class of students then with those in later years, and tells how he came permanently to AUC later in the 1970s. Amin briefly outlines changes in the Economics department over the years, and offers some commentary on AUC students (specifically changes in academic quality over time). He also speaks about the university’s relationship with Egyptian politics and government, including an anecdote about an AUC committee he served on after the 1973 war. His research interests and writings are also covered

Qasim Amin (1863/5-1908) was not the first Arab author in the context of contemporary Islam who wrote and campaigned for the liberation of women, but has been considered the first theorist and the antecedent par excellence in the history of the Egyptian feminist movement. The aim of this paper is to characterize the author feminism in relation to its assessment of the crisis in the Arab world. In particular, I focus on the following issues: Amin’s thesis on female slavery and the relationship between its causes and reformism of the author, according to the criteria he himself points out: freedom and common interest. To further characterize his position, I also consider Amin’s thesis in relation to some of the criticisms and proposals of Stuart Mill on the subjugation of women, one of his sources of inspiration.

Education is very important especially in these challenging times. Various technologies day by day are growing, also the current educational technology. If in the past the traditional delivery of education there should be a lecturer in front and students listened to what the lecturer presented orally. Now keeping pace with technology education where knowledge is delivered not only in accordance with the timetable in the classroom, but can also be delivered on-line and accessible regardless of time and place restrictions call as blended learning techniques. Blended learning is used to deliver knowledge among technology websites, videos, interactive cd, multimedia equipment and many more. The availability of this technology has triggered a variety of learning techniques such as blended learning. There are so many systems that can can support learning techniques process such as Online Academic Online Resources (AUTHOR), an e-learning system used by UTHM. A learning management system must be developed with creativity and innovative features in terms of interface design and system capability to ensure the effectiveness of the system for lecturers and students. Therefore the purpose of this study is to find out why lecturers and students at the Faculty Of Computer Science and Information Technology, UTHM are not fully utilized this e-learning system (AUTHOR). The findings shows that through the development of a workable prototype with improvise interface design using blended learning concept can be applied in this e-learning system (AUTHOR). Hopefully with this improvised interface design will attract the lecturers and students more to fully utilized this system in the future

Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini diajukan rekomendasi berupa : a) Konsep perancangan bangunan tradisional (arsitektur biologik) seperti : orientasi bangunan Utara¬Selatan, jarak antara bangunan rapat tetapi memungkinkan sirkulasi aliran udara, bukaan lebar pada dinding, pemilihan bahan penutup bangunan menggunakan material ringan, pergerakan sirkulasi antar zona lingkungan secara efisien, dan penyediaan ruang-ruang komunal untuk interaksi sosial antar warga. b) Konsep rujukan bersama berupa tradisi dan kepercayaan, seperti : upacara bersih desa Mandasia; gotong royong; sistem pertanian nyabuk gunung, sengkedan, bero, dan pranotomongso; pemilihan lahan hunian secara selektif; menjaga sumber air; dan penampungan air limbah pada blumbang; serta upacara ritual keagamaan. c) Perlunya pendidikan ekologi bagi masyarakat secara aktif melalui pemahaman identitas budaya setempat. xvii ABSTRACT Pancot village in Tawangmangu has experiences transition and construction in a line with the technology and communications development, in which at last will influence the method of Thinking and life conception, so it can be altered community identity. The transition of community if it can't be aware and directed, goes to destructive changing and threatens sustainable environment. This research is aimed to learning the building traditional formed based on the human comfort aspect. The examination of building formed is pointed to: (a) obtain the guidelines of building planning which is consistently build environment and culture oriented; (b) the community tradition which is related to sustainable environment; and (c) identify the building traditional formed. This evaluation research applies the method of descriptive through case study, to learn part of environment conditions on traditional and non-traditional formed. Environment conditions measured quantitatively through discomfort index, and qualitatively ones through convenience, healthiness, and social interaction. Descriptive statistics analyze describe variables into graphics, rates, and percent form. The analysis result has been obtain the research conclusion, as follows: a) The characteristic of material application, that the stone wall and wood gives well protection to the building, and the finishing additional grants resistance value to climate. The use of corrugated-iron cover with roof ventilation indicates the useful management system to the mountainous climate, as well as economics functional as the storage of agricultural product, that is gat. b) The tightness of building mass system assist to reduce the flow of night breeze to the buildings, average 9 — 29 % from outdoor wind velocity 3,1 m/s. The minimal openings on wall cause small indoor air movement, so that the humidity at night is reach the maximum at 88 %. Room humidity and condensation on roofs can be reduced by air circulation through chink roof, double-level plafond, and from front door. c) The result of respondent thermal feeling says that thermal discomfort influenced by physiology and adaptation on field. d) Traditional environment gives better quality on Thermal comfort, healthiness, culture activity, and social interaction, than non-traditional environment. It can be suggest from the research results, the recommendations of: a. The planning criteria involves: North — South orientation; tightness building distance which is not obstruct airflow; wide openings; building covered with light materials; efficiency of air circulation; and communal space for social interaction. b. The preservation of environment which are includes: Mandasia ceremony; mutual-aid; ireboisation; agriculture system nyabuk gunung, sengkedan, bero, and pranotomongso; selectively inhabitant land; The miraculous of water source; and receiving pit on ground containers, also the spirituals/beliefs oriented environment c. The education of environment/ecology through the understanding of cultural identity

Impact of scour on lateral resistance of wind turbine monopiles: An experimental study

    Get PDF
The majority of offshore wind structures are supported on large-diameter, rigid monopile foundations. These piles may be subjected to scour due to the waves and currents that causes a loss of soil support and consequently decreases the pile capacity and system stiffness. The results of numerical models suggest that the shape of the scour hole affects the magnitude of pile capacity loss; however, there is a dearth of experimental test data that quantify this effect. This paper presents a series of centrifuge model tests on an instrumented model pile that investigates the effects of scour-hole geometry on the response of a laterally loaded pile embedded in sand. The pile instrumentation allowed load–displacement and p–y (soil reaction – displacement) curves to be derived. Three scour geometries (global, local wide, and local narrow) and three scour depths (1D, 1.5D, and 2D; where D is pile diameter) were modelled. For all three scour types, pile moment capacity decreased almost linearly with increase of scour depth. Simple empirical relations were proposed to evaluate the detrimental influence of scour on the pile moment capacity. A new method has been developed to allow designers to quantify the effect of scour-hole shape and severity of scour on the pile response.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Geo-engineerin

    No full text
This book on Professor Samir Amin retraces his family origins, intellectual itinerary, political struggles as well as his experience in economic policy formulation in Egypt, Mali and many other countries. The fundamentals which shaped Samir Amin's thinking, directed his life-long work and influenced his action spawned from his early discovery in high school of Marxism and Historical Materialism, used as a scientific analysis of the history of human societies. This book also highlights Samir Amin's invaluable contribution to the struggle against capitalism through his indefatigable fight to deconstruct the concepts that are used to disguise the true face of historical capitalism, which is nothing but an unabashed pursuit for accumulation and dispossession of dominated countries and peoples. Through a series of interviews with Samir Amin, the author unravels the poignant and great ideas which have been at the heart of his intellectual and political fight for the last half century. The author also provides a selection of texts which includes an exhaustive bibliography, with all published writings of Samir Amin in French. This rich work is meant for a large readership - students, researchers, teachers, political leaders and citizens who are interested in the phenomenon of globalisation and its impact on the so-called 'under-developed countries
