    Gra słów w nazwiskach i konstrukcjach onomaturgicznych w L’enfant léopard (1999) Daniela Picouly’ego

The aim of the research is to verify in what way the onomastic devices found in the French novel L’enfant leopard [The Leopard Boy] (1999) by Daniel Picouly determine a potentially plural reception of the text referring to one’s historical, fictional, and rhetorical competence. Devoted primarily to the literary onomastics, the analysis focuses on identifying various contexts reused by the author of the novel and from which he draws the names of the characters and places of his fictional universe. Proper names can be understood as historical references which fulfil the function of authenticating the story, serve as referential anchoring of the narrative, and include intertextual references only a reader of deep literary awareness can grasp. And finally, proper names can be understood as imaginary onomaturgic constructions devised by the author, who employs linguistic and rhetorical strategies to achieve the ludic character of the text. The study reveals the story-building process and by following the onomastic traces, it captures the very method of literary creation adopted by the author. The novel by Daniel Picouly involves a considerable number of characters and, therefore, a wide range of anthroponyms, for many of which the author invites the reader to make inferences and to mobilise their encyclopedia of knowledge to identify the explicit or subtle historical reference within those names. Some of these names are immediately identifiable. For others, however, the reader's inference requires a more accurate search, which calls into question elaborate skills more easily found in a cultured reader than in a common reader.

Storia, analisi e valutazioni sui mamuthones (I parte)

Abstract – EN Franco Sale, expert of the popular traditions of Sardinia, mamuthone and sculptor of masks, is the author of these “memoirs”, written between February 1997 and October 2004, and the conscious heir of the ancient tradition of the rituals of the carnival of Mamojada (Nuoro, Sardinia). This consciousness is also the consciousness of the danger of corruption – caused by touristic exploitation of the ritual contents and items, excessive zeal of folkloristic associations, carelessness from the local institutions, extinction of moments and actors of the oral transmission – which threatens the rituals of the carnival of Mamojada. In this account, published in two parts on this and on the next issue of “Antropologia e teatro”, Sale reports places and mores, describing a historical survey, among influences and repressive attempts of the religious power, until the hard present tradition, “jealously” protected by a minority and proudly performed back to the people of the town, as if it was a mission. Moreover Sale describes the organization of the performance, the roles, the clothing and the action of the mamuthones and the issohadores, the protagonists of the carnival of Mamohada, focusing on elements of deep anthropological interest, such as the use and the meaning of female clothing worn by performers and the actual start time of the procession. In particular this account is worthy thanks to the accurate autobiographical arguments of the author, who lives in this world since childhood and transmits his feelings through precious passages in which he reveals the impression of a different flow of time in the frame of the carnival, evoked by the memory of silent herds, deprived of bells which were used by mamuthones, and the emotional impact of mask and rite

Metamorphosis of the name in the Anti-Roman by Charles Sorel: the anthroponymy between artifice and madness The revival of the pastoral genre in a parodic perspective, in the Anti-Roman (1633-1634) imposed a double restriction on the author with regard to the inventio even for nominal categories. The choice of names had to respect the literary tradition of the genre and the parodic intent justified in the fiction by the madness of the protagonist. The pseudonyms that are attributed to the characters in the Berger are taken from the repertoire of pastoral and heroic-sentimental hypotexts that Sorel reuses in parodic perspective. Thus neology was the easiest tool to indicate intertextual reference to literary works of the same type or, on the contrary, to refer to reality

Fantasia verbale e irriverente parodia in L’Evangile de Jimmy (2004) di Didier van Cauwelaert

Verbal fantasy and irreverent parody in L'Evangile de Jimmy (2004) by Didier van Cauwelaert L'Evangile de Jimmy, by Didier van Cauwelaert (Paris, Albin Michel, 2004), proposes a rewriting of the events from the gospel, but told from a postmodern perspective and featuring typically parodical tones. The Christian isotope, subjected to a process of distortion, forms the leitmotif around which the story unfolds. The author, taking advantage of the mechanisms of expansion and transposition, arrives at the construction of a parodic, apocryphal and desecrating revision, if not actually blasphemous, of some salient events in the life of Christ also entrusted to the nomination. The provocative approach and the communicative intention wrought with parody are especially entrusted to the denominations of the protagonist

The recent 2014 publication of a critical edition of Berger extravagant has disclosed many features of the polygraphic seventeenth-century French author. Sorel's text with its parodial intent grafts onto the vast European pastoral production and also encompasses the field of onomaturgy. We have selected three denomination mechanisms taken up by Sorel in a parodial manner which seem to us to be particularly significant: an onomasiological procedure reproducing the onomastics of pastoral genres but which generates surprising effects; a pseudo-anagrammatical procedure capable of evoking other fictional universes but with unexpected antiphrastic results; a semasiological procedure constructed according to a para-etymological method aiming to ridicule the onomastic frenzy of the authors of pastorals. The vis comica of the onomastic creations present in the novel stems from the comparison between the common onymic repertoire and that of the pastoral literary traditio

The Life and Letters of the Lady Arbella Stuart

    No full text
Lady Arbella Stuart, a woman nearly forgotten in history and literature and yet a woman who lived a full and exciting life which is well documented in her letters to her family, friends and royalty (both Queen Elizabeth I and James VI and I). Arbella Stuart was born in 1575 to Elizabeth Cavendish and Charles Darnley and was brought up by her maternal grandmother, Bess of Hardwick. She was educated from birth about her proximity to the throne (there was a chance she could have been queen when Elizabeth died) and the important role she had in life. There have been several biographies written about Stuart over the years and most recently an excellent text of her existing letters by Sara Jayne Steen which is the primary source of information for this thesis. This thesis examines Stuart’s tone, rhetoric and style in a selection of letters written over the course of her life, where possible using manuscripts viewed in the British Library and Hardwick Hall, as well as the published text. Part of what makes Stuart such an interesting subject is her ability to manipulate her reader and assume different personae, depending on whom she was writing to. The young Stuart writes passionately and often without thinking first, putting her thoughts on paper and then quickly sending them off to the Queen and her advisers. An older and wiser Stuart writes from James VI and I’s court and is very formal in her letters to the King. She is more relaxed when writing to her Aunt and Uncle and depicts court life in a lively informal fashion giving us a valuable insight into what life as a courtier would have been like at this time. Finally the thesis examines Stuart’s last letters written from imprisonment, the work of a desperate woman, fighting for her freedom. Stuart, like most of us, had a multi-faceted personality. She was at times an apparently submissive and subservient subject of the King; a well read and educated woman who adopted the guise of humility and deference to those in authority, the patriarchal order in place. This thesis will depict the many different sides to Stuart and give a brief overview of her exciting and turbulent life, told through her letters

This essay investigates the essential role of salt throughout human history, focusing on the production and exploitation of sea salt in Tuscany’s Maremma region during the Bronze Age and early Iron Age. Through archaeological and historical analysis, the author highlights how salt—a vital resource for both human and animal physiology—profoundly shaped the economic, social, and symbolic dynamics of ancient communities. The transition from spontaneous consumption in the Paleolithic to planned production in the Neolithic is traced, culminating in the development of sophisticated extraction and crystallization techniques. The areas of Scarlino and the Gulf of Baratti are identified as strategic centers for salt production, with kiln structures and ceramic deposits reflecting a shared technical knowledge across Europe. Salt not only ensured food preservation but also became a symbol of value, spirituality, and cultural exchang

Remedies for breach of contract in the international sale of goods – a comparative study between the CISG, Chinese Law and English law with reference to Chinese cases

    No full text
The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) is one of the most successful international instruments that provide uniformity in the rules for international trade. It has been adopted by seventy-three countries and has been in force for twenty-one years. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) signed the CISG on 30th September 1981 and many international sales of goods cases have been resolved under the CISG in China. The author will investigate these Chinese cases to examine the effectiveness of the CISG in order to establish whether the application of the CISG has been successful in leading to predictable judgments. This thesis focuses on remedies for breach of contract in the international sale of goods. Remedies are the main reason why claims are made in the international sale of goods and as such they are fundamental to that trade. The main remedies considered in this thesis are the avoidance of contract, damages and specific performance. In addition, mitigation and the categorisation of the breach of contract are discussed where the former is an important means to restrict the recoverable damages and the latter constitutes the foundation for the study of remedies for breach of contract. Furthermore, the provisions related to the remedial rule of the CISG are those that the Chinese tribunals have applied most in their judgments. Research in this area provides the author with sufficient sources of cases for the examination of the Chinese decisions. Two other alternative national regimes are compared with the CISG to assess the predictability of decisions under these systems. These are the old Chinese law, i.e., the PRC Foreign-Related Economic Contract Law (FECL) and English law, i.e., Sale of Goods Act 1979 (SGA) together with English case law. The FECL was the governing law of the international sale contract before China acceded to the CISG. The SGA is the present statute of English international sale contract law. The similarities and differences of the remedial rules between the CISG, FECL and English law are compared in this thesis. Analysis of the Chinese cases tried under the rules of the CISG shows that the outcomes of these cases are not predictable. The author will apply the remedial rules of the FECL and English law to the Chinese cases examined here to find out whether the application of either of these two alternative regimes could have led to outcomes that are more predictable. The conclusion of this thesis summarizes the results of the author’s examination with regard to the Chinese tribunals’ difficulties in making predictable judgments, the causes of difficulty where judgments have been unpredictable and the author’s proposals as to how to resolve such difficultie

Augusta Rasponi del Sale (1864 – 1942) aka Gugù wrote and illustrated children’s picture books published in England, France, Italy; she dedicated her work to the representation of early childhood. She used to portray herself as a duck, or goose and she devoted her life to neglected children. She looked at childhood from a unique point of view – her work as an author focused on representing all children, also infants of the age of one, two and three months, dedicating realistic portraits and poetic verses to them. What emerges from her work is a modern way to conceive children’s books and early childhood life conditions and rights. She created a cultural portrait of childhood of her time – representing not only childhood but also early childhood. This article focuses on her work, in order to rediscover the value of a great, forgotten children’s literature author still capable to amaze scholars and educators.
