Revealing otherness : a comparative examination of French and English medieval hagiographical romance
This dissertation is an analysis of three hagiographical romances written in France around the thirteenth century and later adapted into English. The texts are Ami et Amile, Robert le Diable and Florence de Rome and their English counterparts Amis and Amiloun, Sir Gowther and Le bone Florence of Rome. All six texts have been understudied, with the possible exception of Ami et Amile. They are linked in many ways, some thematic, some generic. They have all caused confusion and arguments as to what their genre is (Epic? Saint’s life? Romance? A combination of two or three genres?) and feature the defining notions of otherness, exile and penance. In spite of appearances, this work shows that the French and English authors prove to have quite different takes on the same stories. Drawing on Lacanian psychoanalysis and postcolonial theory, the chapters discuss the presence of otherness in the texts, in all its manifestations and offer new readings of the poems as well as possible solutions to the difficult question of genre in the middle ages. The many shapes taken by the other/Other (physical and emotional otherness; hybridity and gender) are exposed and utilised to uncover the meanings and ideological complexities of these multidimensional poems. This approach also reveals that the English texts propose a more conservative reading of common material than did their French originals. It is therefore suggested that the generic tendencies of these medieval texts be correlated with the importance of the Other in the respective redactions of the tales. Reading without consideration of these two factors produces a lopsided comparative view, while reading with both in mind leads to a better appreciation of rewriting and adaptation in the Middle Ages
Is There an Age Pattern in the Treatment of AMI? Evidence from Ontario
In this article we analyse the rates at which those admitted to hospital with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) receive aggressive treatment, assess how those rates have changed over time, and ask whether there is evidence of age discrepancies. Estimates made on the basis of data from an administrative database that includes discharges from all acute care hospitals in Ontario for selected years, from 1995 to 2005, indicate that there are strong and persistent age patterns in the application of medical technology. Results showed that to be true even after controlling for the higher rates of co-morbidities among older patients and variations across hospitals in practice patterns.treatment of AMI, age pattern

The education of the economist John Stuart Mill is undoubtedly one of the most unusual experiences orchestrated by a tutor or father in human history. Conceived and planned by his father, James Mill, and his most faithful friend, the philosopher Jeremy Bentham, Mill’s education was designed to make him an active defender of utilitarian philosophy. The life of John Stuart Mill, however, is a remarkable illustration of how the transmission of an educational form - but also the distancing from it - builds as much as it modifies a scientific approach at the same time as it changes the trajectory of a life. In this article, we seek, through and beyond the testimony given by the author in his Memoirs, the traces of the drastic constraints of the education he receives as well as those of its transformation following the existential crisis he experiences at the end of his adolescence. In particular, we show how the recovery of his sensibility influenced John Stuart Mill’s scientific thinking - and in particular the scope of utilitarianism (which he retained while amending it) - as well as the course of his affective life (his meeting with Harriet Taylor)
Hybrid Key Management Scheme for Secure AMI Communications
AbstractAdvanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is an essential attribute of Smart Grid. To ensure secure communication for smart metering one must ensure that the data which is sent or received is authorized and confidential. This article deals with a hybrid encryption scheme for unicast, multicast and broadcast communication in AMI. To ensure confidentiality, integrity and authenticity, a Key Management Scheme (KMS) for hybrid communication modes is proposed. The proposed scheme provides excellent level of security and reduces the computational load on Smart Meter (SM)
