“Still Blundering into Sense”. Maria Edgeworth, her context, her legacy is a collection of international contributions to celebrate Maria Edgeworth’s 250th anniversary. Maria Edgeworth has been a pivotal figure at her time: as a woman, as a writer, as an educator. If her contemporaries owe her much, the legacy she left still holds a considerable value in the many fields she explored, and inspired people to work on - especially in the different disciplines related to education, which she has been the first to consider a science

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Maria Vittoria Molinari e il gotico di Crimea

Maria Vittoria Molinari’s scientific career as a germanist was rather peculiar. Pupil of the famous Indo-Europeanist Vittore Pisani, she focused her research on the historical and cultural aspects of the linguistic material investigated. In the present paper her approach to the texts will be illustrated, also showing that philology was the inevitable development of her attitude to texts. The method exploited by Maria Vittoria Molinari in her investigation of the documents preserving Crimean Gothic still remains a model of analysi

Developing a Resource for Optimizing Occupational Engagement in Adults with Dementia

    No full text
Dementia is an umbrella term for cognitive impairments in memory, language, executive function, which may affect behavior and personality. Globally, about 50 million people have dementia, and that number is expected to reach 150 million by the year 2050 (Fortinsky et al., 2020). Dementia is a progressive disease that affects an individual’s ability to perform their daily occupations. The progression of dementia stages can be classified as early/mild, middle/moderate, and late/severe. Alzheimer’s disease makes up 60-80% of all dementia cases, although there are various other types of dementia, including Frontotemporal dementia, Lewy Body dementia, Vascular dementia, and Parkinson’s disease dementia to name a few (Alzheimer’s Association, 2021a). The progression, severity, and symptoms of dementia may vary from person to person, though typically an individual can expect to live 8 to 12 years after their initial diagnosis (Zimmerman et al., 2013). Family members and friends typically take on the caregiver role, although, as the care recipient\u27s needs increase, they may not know how to adequately care for their loved one or may not be well equipped to care for someone with dementia (Fortinsky et al., 2020; Gitlin et al., 2010; Rahja et al., 2020). As an individual with dementia experiences a progressive decline in health and function, caregivers are required to provide greater levels of care. Without the necessary support and resources, caregivers may experience higher levels of stress and caregiver burden; consequently, resulting in poor outcomes such as long-term care placement (Gitlin et al., 2010). Thus, it is important to support caregivers by providing the necessary education and resources to improve their ability to care for their loved ones with dementia. Because most individuals with dementia live in the community, promoting independence and engagement in 6 activities is especially important as it may promote aging in place and remaining in the community (Fortinsky et al., 2020; Gitlin et al., 2010; Rahja et al., 2020). Occupational therapy (OT) can help promote independence and participation during occupations, throughout the disease process. Regardless of a person’s condition, client-centered care should be provided to improve engagement in activities and independence. Supporting caregivers by giving them resources to facilitate occupational engagement by modifying the environment, tasks, and communication will allow the person to continue participating in the meaningful activities and foster positive outcomes for the individual with dementia and their caregiver(s). Therefore, the current program at Oakwood Creative Care (OCC), was aimed to develop a resource to provide caregivers and community members with evidence-based recommendations on how to optimize occupational engagement in adults with dementia

Grammatical gender in Spanish child heritage speakers: Incomplete or different acquisition?

This study examines grammatical gender (GG) production in young Spanish heritage-speakers (HSs) and the potential effect of the children’s language use and their parents’ input. We compared four and eight-year-old HSs to same-age monolingual children on their gender production. We measured GG production in determiners and adjectives via an elicited production task. HSs’ parents reported children’s time in each language and also completed the elicitation task. Results show that HSs’ scored significantly lower than monolinguals in both grammatical structures in which the unmarked masculine default predominates. However, older HSs had higher accuracy than younger HSs. Input from parents is not correlated with HSs’ performance and neither Spanish use nor language proficiency predicts GG performance on HSs. For theories of language acquisition, it is important to consider that although the linguistic knowledge of the HSs may differ from that of monolinguals, their grammar is protracted rather than incomplete

Production and comprehension of grammatical gender by Spanish heritage speakers: Evidence from accusative clitic pronouns

    No full text
Objectives: This study investigates (a) the accuracy of Heritage Speakers (HSs) in production and comprehension of Spanish clitic pronouns when compared to monolingual children, (b) the differences in error patterns between groups, and (c) the possible asymmetry in production and comprehension in gender clitics. Methodology: The participants included six groups, a group of Spanish-HS divided into three age groups, PreKinder, 3rd-Grade, and Adults, and a group of Spanish-monolinguals of the same ages. Agreement data were obtained using a cloze-format task for production and a picture selection task for comprehension. Data and Analysis: The results compared accuracy and response time scores between HSs and monolingual speakers, between age groups, and target gender using a 2 × 3 multivariable analysis of variance. Findings: Children in the HS-group scored lower in accuracy than the monolingual children, but Adult-HS performed at the same level as Adult-Monolinguals. HSs, but not monolinguals, overused the masculine form. Production and comprehension scores showed an asymmetrical development in which speakers are better at clitic production than comprehension. Gender clitic agreement is a difficult aspect at age 4, even in monolingual contexts. Originality: The potential contribution of this study is twofold. First, it contributes to the continuing debate on the development of HSs’ grammar by comparing comprehension and production data of monolinguals and HSs, matched for age. Second, it provides evidence of high rates of gender agreement in Adult-HSs. Significance: Grammatical gender is a vulnerable aspect of Spanish-HS grammar, but it is not an incompletely acquired representation. Results support a dissociation between production and comprehension of gender clitic
