Effects of anaesthetics on the behaviour of mullet fingerlings and the scope of using these in different fishery procedures II. Effects of Tertiary Amyl Alcohol, Ether, Quinaldine, Paraldehyde, Pentobarbital Sodium, Phenobarbital Sodium and MS-222 Sandox.
The present paper is the continuation of the work by the author published earlier (Durve and Dharma Raja, 1966). Here, seven more anaesthetics in different concentrations have been tried in order to study their effects
on the behaviour of fingerlings of the mullet Liza fade. This has enabled the author to select suitable anaesthetics—out of thirteen so far experimented
with—for fishery work such as transport of live fish, tagging, fin-clipping, weighing, stripping and operating. Earlier work on the subject has been discussed by Durve and Dharma Raja (op.cit.). At the end of the present
paper, a general review of all the thirteen anaesthetics is given. Material and methods are the same as mentioned in the earlier paper (Durve and Dharma Raja op. cit.). All experiments were carried out in freshwater and at temperatures ranging from 27 to 28° C

Study of Coefficient of Friction and Springback Analysis of Brass in Bending at Elevated Temperature Conditions
755-763In the present work, finite element analysis is carried out for the minimization of springback in the V-bending process for high-strength brass sheet metal. Firstly, the uniaxial tensile test is conducted to determine the various material properties required for finite element analysis. The various test parameters considered in the V-Bending process are temperature (573 K, 673 K and 773K), punch speeds (1 mm/min, 5 mm/min and 10 mm/min), holding time (30 s, 60 s and 90 s) and sheet orientation concerning rolling direction RD (00), ND (450) and TD (900) for finite element analysis. The bending under tension test is used to determine the coefficient of friction at different temperatures and lubrication conditions, and these values are implemented in finite element simulations of the V-bending process. Taguchi analysis is carried out to determine springback of high-strength brass alloy by selecting four control factors (temperature, punch speed, holding time, and orientation). From the analysis of the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, it is reported that the temperature (46.93%) is the most significant parameter which influences the springback followed by holding time (26.29%), sheet orientation (24.07%) and punch speed (2.69%). The optimal set obtained for the minimum springback of brass alloy and the conformation test is performed at the optimum set conditions (773 K temperature, 1 mm/min punch speed, 90 s holding time, and 90° to the rolling direction of a sheet). With the optimal set of process parameters, Springback decreased significantly to around 68.68%. Through the investigation of springback analysis, it is directly proportional to the temperature and holding time and inversely proportional to the punch speed, but sheet orientation doesn’t follow any trends
Face Management and Issues of Power, Solidarity, and Distance: Socio-Pragmatic Influences on Literary Discourses
Literature, in many ways, reflects human societies. Literature is mainly a linguistic and aesthetic reflection of how human beings conduct their personal and social lives. The use of language by nature is a social activity. Human beings conduct all aspects of their lives through language. In the backdrop of this premise, human communication is, by nature, social communication. Furthermore, language is shaped by societies and, in turn, societies are also shaped by the language they shape. The human communication functions and works on the social aspects related to who speaks to whom, when, in what language, where, how, and for what purpose. In all contexts, the sociolinguistic aspects of power principle, solidarity principle, distance, and face management play an influential role in determining the tenor, tone and mode of communication. This paper attempts to examine, analyze and discuss the socio-pragmatic perspectives that shape, guide, and give direction to inter-personal human communication. This analytical discussion of the socio-pragmatic aspects of language use will be carried out through sociolinguistic analyses of dialogic discourses from the magnum opus A Suitable Boy (ASB) authored by Vikram Seth, which is considered to be an authentic socio-cultural document of India.
Population ageing is regarded as a considerable phenomenon in the current century and it has contributed to countless studies concerning the elderly. Yoga, as an example has its roots in the Indian culture dating back 5.000 years ago and it has been widened its scope to several age groups, specially the elderly. The current study suggests yoga practicals for people who are sixty or older, focusing on a better quality of life and it also focuses on integrate these practicals with health programs in universities, city halls and in living centers. The principal aim of this study was to reveal and interpret the elderly perception about the effects they felt when they practiced yoga. After practicing Hatha Yoga and Yogatherapy for twenty months between 2008 and 2009 there were semi structured interviews with 27 elderly people, their age varying between 60 and 84 years old and an average of 69,5 years old. The current study is a qualitative research based on an action research methodology. Several effects of yoga were found out. At the physical level the elderly reported the balance of the organism and improvement in several systems: mainly digestive, respiratory, nervous and locomotor- pain relief, flexibility improvement, awakening of the body awareness, insomnia prevention, better state of health, lightness feeling and general well being; at the psycho-emotional level the elderly reported relaxing, improvement in the concentration and memory, peace feeling, serenity and tranquility and a better control of anxiety; at the socio-affective level the elderly reported social living and importance of the group; at the spiritual level it was pointed out the union between spiritual and physical, balance and harmony of mind, emotions and spirit. The effects above described were supported by the literature. Experimental studies indicate that Yogatherapy can help in the control and cure of many chronic diseases. It is recommended that this method should be used in health programs for elderly, as well as further research should be carried out focusing on yoga practicals for the elderly
The phenomenon of possession and exorcism in north India and amongst the Punjabi diaspora in Wolverhampton.
A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Wolverhampton for the degree of Master of PhilosophyBased upon two years fieldwork in Wolverhampton and Coventry, and several field trips to Punjab, this thesis focuses on the prevalence of possession and exorcism as a manifestation of Punjabi religion amongst the Punjabi diaspora in Wolverhampton. Euro-centric scholarship and reform movements in the 1900s, in India, suppressed religious traditions that did not conform to the textual and institutionalised forms of religion. This thesis proposes that the phenomenon of possession and exorcism observed amongst the Punjabi diaspora in Wolverhampton is in no way novel, rather it is a diasporic reconstruction of a vital tradition found within the religious traditions from the Punjab, and on a larger scale in the Indian sub-continent. Furthermore the Punjabi diaspora in Wolverhampton are in no way unique in the re-construction of this religious tradition in Britain. Various forms of supernatural malaise are prevalent amongst the Punjabi diaspora in Wolverhampton that are utilised by the community to explain the inexplicable diversities they face in daily life. These supernatural afflictions provide the Punjabi diaspora with a useful method of accepting adversity but also various methods to tackle it through the assistance of a baba or bhagat. This thesis explores the underlying cosmological discourses prevalent in the worldview of north Indian religious traditions in an attempt to analyse a relatively untouched phenomenon of religious beliefs and practices of the Punjabi diaspora in Wolverhampton

Epic legacies: Hindu cultural nationalism and female sexual identities in India 1920-1960
PhDThe thesis investigates the cultural interventions of Hindu nationalist, C. Rajagopalachari (CR), by
offering a close reading of his re-tellings of the Hindu epics, The Mahabharata (1951) and The
Ramayana (1956). It positions them alongside the writings of M. K. Gandhi and the key responses to
Katherine Mayo’s controversial text Mother India (1927). The thesis explores the central female
protagonists of the epics – Sita and Draupadi – asking how these poetic representations illuminate the
ways in which femininity was imagined by an influential Hindu ideologue during the early years of
Indian Independence.
Using close textual analysis as my principal method I suggest that these popular-literary
representations of sexual identities in Hindu culture functioned as one means by which Hindu
nationalists ultimately sought to regulate gender roles and modes of being. I focus on texts emerging
in the years immediately before and after Independence and Partition. In this period, I suggest, the
heroines of these versions of the epic texts are divested of their bodies and of their mythic powers in
order to create pliant, de-sexualised female icons for women in the new nation to emulate.
Through an examination of the responses to Katherine Mayo’s Mother India (1927), and of Gandhi’s
writings, I argue that there one can discern an attempt in the Hindu Indian script to define female
sexual identity as maternal, predominantly in service to the nation.
These themes, I argue, were later articulated in CR’s recasting of the Hindu epics. CR’s epics
represent the vision of gender within Hindu nationalism that highlights female chastity in the epics,
elevating female chastity into an authentic and perennial virtue. I argue, however, that these ‘new’
representations in fact mark a re-working of much older traditions that carries forward ideas from the
colonial period into the period of Independence. I explore this longer colonial tradition in the
Prologue, through a textual analysis of the work of William Jones and James Mill.
Thus my focus concerns the symbolic forms of the nation – its mythologies and icons – as brought to
life by an emergent Hindu nationalism, suggesting that these symbolic forms offer an insight into the
gendering of the independent nation. The epics represented an idealised model of Hindu femininity. I
recognise, of course, that these identities are always contested, always unfinished. However I suggest
that, through the recasting of the epic heroines, an idea of female sexuality entered into what senior
Hindu nationalist and Congressman, K.M. Munshi, called ‘the unconscious of India’
Study of Formability of Brass Sheet Metal Under Different Temperature Conditions
In the present work focus devoted to the results obtained from uniaxial tensile test were utilized to analyze flow stress behavior of brass under different orientation, temperature and strain rate conditions and the study of forming limit diagrams for stretch forming of brass sheet material at room temperature and at various elevated temperatures have been estimated experimentally by performing stretch forming operations using warm forming tooling setup (i.e., suitable punch – die and blank holding set-up). After stretch forming the brass sheets metal at different temperature conditions (i.e., 300 K to 773 K) the minor and major strains are measured by using the electron microscope and then forming limit diagrams (FLDs) were constructed. With the help of forming limit diagram (FLDs) formability of brass analyzed. These formability limit diagrams (FLDs) were co-related with mechanical properties such as tensile strength and % elongation, and in-plane anisotropy of the brass sheet material
