    Effects of salinity, temperature and photoperiod on egg production of Pseudodiaptomus annandalei (Copepoda: Calanoida) used as live feed in Mariculture

    Copepods are essential for maintaining marine ecosystems, and nauplii of Pseudodiaptomus annandalei serves as a crucial food source for fish larvae. This study investigated how salinity, temperature, and photoperiod (Light: Dark cycle) affect the reproductive traits of this copepod in a controlled environment. Clutch size was highest at 15 ppt salinity, with an average of 18.00 ± 0.58 eggs, while it dropped significantly to 9.33 ± 0.33 at 30 ppt. The dimensions of egg sacs and the total length of adult females were also smallest at 30 ppt. Among different salinities, the shortest times to first and total maturity were recorded at 10 ppt, whereas the longest times occurred at 30 ppt. Temperature also played a critical role; clutch size peaked at 28 °C and was lowest at 25 °C, with an average of 11.00 ± 0.41. Photoperiod had a limited impact on reproductive output, but the highest clutch size was observed in a 0 hL:24 hD light cycle. The findings suggest that optimal conditions for maximizing nauplii production in P. annandalei are a salinity of 15 ppt, a temperature of 28 °C, and a continuous dark photoperiod (0 hL:24 hD). Under these conditions, the highest hatching percentage was achieved, highlighting the importance of these factors for effective breeding in this copepod species.     Does fishery management for groupers (Teleostei: Epinephelidae) protect them effectively? Context from the IUCN's Red list of threatened species

    Worldwide, groupers (Epinephelidae) are commercially valued fishes, which also play key ecological roles on tropical and subtropical reefs. In 2007 and 2016, the IUCN's Groupers and Wrasses Specialist Group assessed all 160+ grouper species, with 17 of these being identified as threatened in 2016 and the major threat factor being overexploitation. Our present study aimed to identify whether management measures (MMs) for previously assessed groupers were established, whether these measures aligned with IUCN's Red List categories, and whether they effectively protect grouper populations. Experts in grouper biology and management assigned scores per grouper species based on the extent to which MMs were in place and effective throughout these species' geographic ranges. Simple 4-level scores (0–3) were used to indicate the extent to which a MM was in place and how effective it was considered to be over the global distribution of each species. Of the 50 species scored, which included almost all threatened species, 97 % showed no/extremely limited/limited use of MMs, while only 3 % showed widespread/extensive use of MMs. Only 2 % of species showed highly/very effective scores for management, while 98 % showed limited/extremely limited/ineffective scores or no MMs in place. The MMs and their effectiveness were not commensurate with IUCN extinction risk levels. Overall, fishery management implemented for groupers by governments needs to be substantially improved, basic biological studies on many species are urgently required, fishing effort needs to be reduced, and regular biological and fishery monitoring conducted to evaluate the need for, and outcomes of, management. Although not all grouper species form spawning aggregations, recommendations are given to increase the protection of aggregating grouper species, in combination with well-placed Marine Protected Areas

    Early microbial colonization is crucial for immunity and survival in aquatic animals. This study evaluated the impact of egg disinfection on microbial colonization and larval performance in Trachinotus blochii, a high-value mariculture fish. Optimal egg disinfection protocols were initially identified as 20 ppm iodophor for 10 min, 400 ppm H₂O₂ for 10 min, and 40 ppm glutaraldehyde for 5 min to improve hatchability. Sequential analyses included 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing of larval microbiota at 10-days post hatching (DPH) and assessment of survival and antioxidant status till 25 DPH. Disinfection significantly enhanced hatchability (up to 90.88 ± 2% with 40 ppm glutaraldehyde), larval survival (up to 34.80 ± 1.1% in glutaraldehyde and 31.18 ± 1.5% in H₂O₂), and catalase activity. Notably, egg disinfection reshaped the larval microbiota, enriching microbial diversity measures and beneficial bacterial taxa, such as Hyphomonadaceae, Halieaceae, Nannocystaceae, and Alteromonadaceae. Improved survival correlated with enhanced taxonomic and functional metagenomic diversity, lower Proteobacteria: Bacteroidota ratio and higher combined proportions of Fusobacteriota, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidota relative to Proteobacteria. The findings suggest that egg disinfection acts as a microbiota programming strategy to promote larval health, offering a practical approach to enhance sustainability in T. blochii aquaculture

    The Visakhapatnam Regional Centre of the ICAR-CMFRI marked its 79th Foundation Day on Tuesday with a vibrant open house event that attracted over 1,100 visitors, offering a close look at the region’s rich marine life. Visitors, especially children, were fascinated by live displays of marine organisms, including translucent jellyfish housed in specially designed tanks, various crab and shrimp species, colourful seaweed, and a range of fish. The open house featured several attractions, including museum tours highlighting marine biodiversity, displays of SCUBA and surfing equipment, kayaks, and photo opportunities with life-sized models of sharks, dolphins, lobsters and octopuses. A key highlight was interaction sessions with 12 marine researchers, who shared insights into their ongoing research and addressed questions from visitors

    Harnessing seaweeds for third-generation bioethanol: Opportunities in the Indian context

    Seaweeds have emerged as a highly promising feedstock for third-generation (3G) bioethanol production, offering several advantages over terrestrial biomass, including lower lignin contents, faster growth rates, and minimal resource requirements. Despite India’s vast 8,000 km coastline, rich seaweed biodiversity, and strong coastal community, its contribution to global seaweed-based bioethanol production remains minimal. This review critically examines the untapped potential of Indian macroalgae for sustainable bioethanol production, highlighting opportunities and challenges. It discusses the current status, diversity and distribution of native seaweed species, their biochemical profiles, and strategies for prioritizing feedstocks. The review examines the advances in 3G bioethanol technologies ranging from seaweed collection, post-harvest processing, pretreatment strategies, fermentation to bioethanol recovery alongside the significance of integrated seaweed biorefineries and role of leading Indian research institutions. Future prospects are analysed, culminating in a proposed strategic roadmap to accelerate India’s transition from research to commercial-scale seaweed bioethanol production. By aligning scientific innovation with policy support and ecosystem-based resource management, India, third largest global energy consumer can position itself as a global leader in sustainable, seaweed-derived bioethanol, contributing to its bioenergy and blue economy ambitions.
