Utopia and iconicity: reading Saint-Simonian texts
No full textIn his study of Thomas More’s Utopia, Louis Marin identifies a productive discontinuity peculiar to that work. The discontinuity arises from the tension between, on the one hand, the textual objective of delimiting the complex social reality of the egalitarian island state within a given conceptual language and, on the other, the capacity of the reader of More’s work to visualize mentally the referential content of that language in the form of an iconic representation, as a map of the island. This article develops the tension identified by Marin between discourse and iconicity by reference to some examples of texts by members of the Saint-Simonian movement, one of the chief currents of ‘utopian’ socialism in nineteenth-century France.
While Marin’s analysis is based on a cartographic conception of the utopian text’s iconic elements, however, this article argues that in Saint-Simonian discourse, the iconic function is not supplied by a real or imagined map, but transfers instead to the opaque (typo)graphic support of that discourse. Shapes and patterns are produced by the graphic disposition of signifiers across the page that are surplus to their tacit referential function, but which point to something that Saint-Simonian doctrine cannot yet affirm via the conceptual antithesis of ‘matter’ and ‘spirit’ which underpins it

No full textНаводиться інформація про нові місцезнаходження (всі — з Білорусі) рідкісного гриба Leveillula helichrysi Heluta et Simonian (Erysiphales, Ascomycota), описаного з України й пізніше знайденого також у Німеччині та Російській Федерації. Припускається, що гриб буде знайдено і в інших країнах Європи. Він, очевидно, є у Польщі, звідки наводився як L. taurica (Lйv.) G. Arnaud.Information about records of Leveillula helichrysi Heluta et Simonian (Erysiphales, Ascomycota) in Belarus’ is provided. The fungus is a new species for this country. It was described from Ukraine and later recorded in Germany and Russia. It is supposed that the fungus will be found in other countries of Europe. Probably L. helichrysi also occurs in Poland, where it was reported under the misapplied name L. taurica (Lév.) G. Arnaud

No full textThis chapter focuses on the nineteenth-century utopianist movement of Saint-Simonianism. It discusses the movement’s project of social regeneration centred on a vast programme of public works which were intended to integrate human activities into the landscape and act as instruments for social unification, through a reconfiguration of the built and natural environments. The chapter argues that the dynamic conception of space that is at the core of these projects simultaneously stimulates the exploration of new poetic potentialities in Saint-Simonian writing by authors such as Chevalier and the playwright Charles Duveyrier

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
No full textWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
