Una miscellanea di ispirazione boeziana nell’Abbazia di Saint-Amand. Il ms. Valenciennes, Bibliothèque Municipale, 298

This essay aims to illustrate the case of a miscellaneous manuscript written at Saint-Amand abbey in the 11th century, whose collected texts, apparently heterogeneous, show on closer observation affinities of themes and inspiration. The hypothesis that is proposed is that the collection can be traced back - for many reasons - to a unique and well-defined personality, that of Folcuinus, a monk and prior of the same abbey, author of a poem of undoubted Boethian inspiration, in the form of a dialogue between a discipulus and a magistra or musa: Thalia

This is a book focused on three women. Two are heroines of the history of science; a the third one is the author herself, professor Keiko Kawashima of the Nagoya Institute of Technology. By saying this, I mean that every woman involved in scientific/academic research could identify herself for a while with the episodes related. It may well be that the key word of the book is “empathy.

Yella Hertzka (1873–1948): Auto/biography and Personal Relationships

    No full text
This article addresses human interaction as a central site of life and biography, and traces the impact of personal relationships on historical and archival records. Corinna Oesch examines the interconnection of personal, political and business life in the correspondence of feminist and pacifist Yella Hertzka, preserved by Viennese music publisher Universal Edition. The author takes Liz Stanley’s method/theorization of auto/biography as a point of departure, reflects on her own involvement with Hertzka’s biography, and discusses the theoretical implications of the research of personal relationships. Looking at the letters exchanged between Hertzka and two of her friends, feminist schoolfounder Salka Goldmann and feminist writer and politician Käthe Schirmacher, Oesch traces the possibilities and limitations of the auto/biographical research of personal relationships. This article addresses human interaction as a central site of life and biography, and traces the impact of personal relationships on historical and archival records. Mild chronic whole body vibration does not affect bone mineral mass or density in young females

Whole body vibration (WBV) is increasingly being used in several physical therapy settings. In order to evaluate the ability of WBV to affect bone mineral component, thirty-six young (mean age 25.3 ± 5.26 yrs) healthy females underwent eight weeks of WBV exercise (nineteen minutes per session, two session a week; vibration amplitude 2.0-5.0 mm, vibration frequency 40-60 Hz). Bone mineral content (BMC) and density (BMD) were evaluated before and after the WBV trial using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in the whole body mode. Data were analyzed with repeated measures analysis of variance. Results show that neither BMC nor BMD were significantly affected by the WBV trial at the total body or regional skeletal level. It is concluded that, under the current experimental conditions, WBV exercise is not able to improve bone mineral parameters in young healthy females before the peak bone mass. Further investigation is required to recommend WBV for increasing bone quality parameters in premenopausal women

Bicycle Ambulances in rural Uganda - Analysis of factors influencing its usage

    No full text
This article reports on a study undertaken to analyze the usage of the bicycle ambulances in Uganda. Since 1997, approximately 400 bicycle ambulances have been distributed to villages in rural Uganda to improve accessibility to health centers. Approximately 20% of the population of Uganda have to travel more than 5 km to a health center, in a country where most transportation is by foot. A bicycle ambulance is a bicycle with an attached trailer used to transport seriously sick patients up to 15 km. The author conducted guided interviews with receivers and the distributors of bicycle ambulances in selected villages. Factors have been defined that influence the usage of bicycle ambulances, including individual village characteristics, the features of the bicycle ambulance, the system of distribution, and the organization of the groups using the bicycle ambulances. The distance to the health center, nor the distance to the main road and quality of the road itself significantly influenced the usage of the bicycle ambulance. The frequency of usage of the bicycle ambulances was limited to a few cases in a month or year. The only significant influence on the frequency of usage was observed based on the different organizational structures of the bicycle ambulance groups. The author considers some of the barriers to use, including long distances to health centers and costs of repairs, but notes that these and other barriers can be overcome through the positive attitude of group members

The article continues a series of articles devoted to the novel “Corinna, or Italy” by Germaine de Staël, French writer of the 19th century. The article analyzes the system of modelling, typologization and functioning of time plans in the text of the work. The plot-forming and sense-forming functions of time are distinguished. The author of the article also points to the use of perceptual type of temporary construction of the text associated with the subjective author’s narrating. It is argued that this feature of the presentation deepens psychologism and enhances the moral and ethical problems of the novel. It is revealed that the category of time in the novel “Corinna,” in addition to purely rational, acquires additional symbolic significance. The author of the article believes that G. de Staël turns this or that historical time into some additional sign of the event. It is emphasized that the individual author’s symbolism is created in the novel by addressing the ancient history of Italy. It is noted that G. de Staël, without abandoning the traditional methods, also realizes her poetic findings. The author proves that the principles of temporal construction of the novel text evolve in accordance with the writer’s search for new forms

L'autoportrait de la narratrice dans La Religieuse : les ruses du regard

Corinna Gepner : The Self -portrait of the Narrator in La Religieuse. This study of the conflict between attempts to seduce and to move the reader in La Religieuse analyses the physical and moral representation the narrator gives of herself in this work, which is intended to touch us with its account of the misfortunes she suffers. Can there be emotion without seduction? We show that the self-portrait is achieved by indirect means : the female narrator adopts the point of view of others to describe her charms, thus refusing to assume her power of seduction directly. The only exception to the technique of indirect portraiture is the exhibition of Suzanne's suffering, which is exposed shamelessly to the gaze of the person for whom the work is entended. Does suffering exorcise any impure desire to please ? One cannot ignore its erotic power. Seduction is thus at the heart of the work ; this seduction concerns the intended recipient but also the reader, who is reminded by a profoundly ironical author of the gratuitous nature of his own desire.Gepner Corinna. Levels of Household Chaos Tied to Quality of Parent-Adolescent Relationships in Coös County, New Hampshire

    No full text
In this brief, author Corinna Tucker examines Coös County adolescents’ reports of household chaos using data from the Coös Youth Study and discusses whether socio-economic and parenting differences are related to adolescents who experience household chaos. Tucker reports that household chaos—characterized by high levels of environmental noise, crowding, disorganization and instability—is generally low in Coös County, but there is variability in the extent of adolescents’ experiences with chaos. Household chaos was greater in households with lower socio-economic status than those with average and higher socio-economic status. The finding that household chaos was related to adolescents’ reports of lower quality relationships with mothers and fathers is consistent with previous work focused on children
