The Dawn of Rural Public Health in Japan: Support by the Rockefeller Foundation before and during World War II
The Rockefeller Foundation was involved in the earliest days of modern preventive healthcare in Japan. Its strategy of promoting primary health care by means of clinics and health centers staffed by public health nurses, trained through fellowship opportunities in the US, expanded to Japan in the late 1920s. The first organized rural public health initiative in Japan was in 1933 in Kanagawa Prefecture, staffed by seven public health nurses from St. Luke's Hospital and afforded valuable training in the context of rural public health. The idea of a rural health center had been discussed for some years and the successes seen in Kanagawa made clear their potential. Nevertheless, the rural health center was not a top priority. Finding the public finances to establish it was a lengthy process which only came after the founding of an urban health center in Tokyo, opened in 1935. The first rural health center was established in 1938 with leadership roles taken by staff who had received Rockefeller Foundation fellowships. Around the same time, the Davison Fund was supporting a rural public health initiative - Miyoshi Aikoen Nursery - led by a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The health program in this center was greatly influenced by St. Luke's leaders and the public health nurse who worked there was a former Rockefeller Foundation fellowship recipient

These were realised through strategic partnerships and long-term investments in research.Strategic partnerships: We forged significant collaborations with the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and others, enhancing our ability to tackle shared global health challenges effectively.Long-term impact: Our early investments in sensory neurons are now on the brink of revolutionising pain medicine, underscoring the value of curiosity-driven scientific funding with successful phase 3 trials.Global health advocacy: At COP28, we led efforts to spotlight the vital connection between health and climate change, placing health at the forefront of global discussions.Operational success: Despite economic challenges, our robust financial management has ensured strong returns and positioned us to seize future opportunities, continuing our relentless pursuit of improved health outcomes for all.Â
Collaboration as a Catalyst for Change: The Success of the Early Care and Education Association
While there are many potential benefits of early care and education (ECE) including positive child outcomes, support for parental/caregiver employment, and driving economic growth, the nation's early care and education system is still fragile. Long-standing challenges related to access, affordability, and quality are well known.This case study illustrates the Foundation's philanthropic approach underlying the genesis and innovative success of the ECEA, a provider-led network serving ECE professionals in the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont.The network, known as Early Care & Education Association (ECEA), has grown from four active members in 2016 to more than 160 today under the tenure of Amy Brooks, inaugural Executive Director. This case study showcases the contributions of ECEA to the ECE field, not only as providing meaningful mentoring and technical support for center and family child leaders and educators, but also operating a comprehensive suite of ECE workforce development programs.ECEA's programs support the entry of new early educators into the field as well as provide technical assistance to a growing number of director networks, center-based, and family child care providers statewide

Measurement isn't just a yardstick for success—it's also a tool for learning and improvement. In our work with nonprofits, we've seen how those who measure to learn often find that they're able to have more impact, adapt their programs to changing circumstances faster and more effectively, and make better resource allocation decisions.The basic steps of nonprofit measurement and evaluation are straightforward:Define what outcomes and related metrics matter most, based on the organization's theory of change.Measure the metrics by gathering quantitative and qualitative data.Learn and improve based on the data you collect.In addition, organizations typically engage stakeholders—e.g., constituents, front-line staff, board, and donors—throughout the process, from incorporating input on what outcomes matter to reporting back. This can be critical to making measurement approaches more equitable.Â

We believe that people who are closest to the challenges in our education system must be part of shaping solutions. Beacon Research has conducted periodic polls of students, parents/caregivers, teachers, principals, and school district leaders from across New England to gather their views on the state of high school in their communities. As one of the premier performing arts center complexes constructed during the postwar period, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts warrants further scholarly attention in the field of architectural history. Designed and constructed between 1955 and 1969, the Lincoln Center complex transformed the Lincoln Square neighborhood located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan into an exclusive space for the elite. The Lincoln Center Building Committee, chaired by John D. Rockefeller 3rd, collaborated with a network of city leaders, urban planners, architects, and engineers to facilitate the rise of culture via performing arts center design in mid-20th century New York. However, the building of Lincoln Center was not an isolated instance of postwar performing arts center design; rather, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts frames broader narratives about the architectural significance of a postwar American performing arts center building phenomenon that reached its height during the 1960s and 1970s

A Tale of Two (Journalism) Funders: The Markle Foundation, the Knight Foundation, and Historical Approaches to Journalism Philanthropy, 1969-1991
Over the last two decades, institutional philanthropy has become an increasingly important funding source for American journalism. Driven by the collapse of the advertising-based business model that long supported news outlets, foundation funders have increased their news and information grantmaking to fill the gaps left behind by the decimation of local journalism. Despite its growing presence in grantmakers' funding portfolios, there has been relatively little archival research on the history of journalism philanthropy. This report explores how two early journalism funders - the John and Mary R. Markle Foundation and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation - approached their journalism grantmaking between 1969 and 1991. Drawing on archival documents from both foundations housed at the Rockefeller Archive Center (RAC), this report uses the two case studies to begin to sketch the emergence of journalism as a philanthropic cause in the second half of the 20th century
