    Policing, procedural justice and prevention

    Procedural justice is receiving increasing global attention both as a way of improving the legitimacy of policing and because styles of policing associated with procedural justice seem to be associated with improvements in community-police relations and reductions in crime. This chapter locates procedural justice theory within a broader framework of compliance theories, and summarises the main features of the theory. The authors have developed, refined and tested procedural justice theory in Europe and elsewhere, using the 2010 European Social Survey, and the chapter presents some key findings. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the practical and ethical issues in embedding principles of procedural justice in policing

    A study of the viscoelastic relaxation in anhydrous liquid P2O5 is reported. Properties of the time decay of the dynamic structure factor, including the average structural relaxation time and the stretching exponent, were obtained for temperatures from 850 °C to near the glass transition Tg=419 °C using photon correlation spectroscopy. Analysis indicates that P2O5 is a strong glass-forming liquid but one that exhibits an abnormally nonexponential relaxation near Tg. The viscoelastic behavior of P2O5 is compared with that of its alkali-metalmodified metaphosphate counterparts NaPO3 and LiPO3, as well as with the mechanical relaxation of chalcogenide glasses, to demonstrate common patterns in dynamical behavior presumably arising from changes in the average connectivity of the glass structure.2020201-1 - 020201-47

    We report photon correlation spectroscopy measurements of the α-relaxation in a series of glass forming liquids of widely varying fragility and demonstrate a correlation between the nonergodic level of the liquid and its fragility. This correlation, when combined with a previous correlation established between fragility and the stretching exponent that characterizes the nonexponentiality of the α-relaxation, implies that the α-relaxation should, in general, conform to scaling that is described by just two parameters: the nonergodic level and the glass transition temperature.131322017

    Evidence for the decay B0→J/ψω and measurement of the relative branching fractions of meson decays to J/ψη and J/ψη′

    First evidence of the B 0 → J / ψ ω decay is found and the B s 0 → J / ψ η and B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ decays are studied using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb -1 collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. The branching fractions of these decays are measured relative to that of the B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0 decay:frac(B (B 0 → J / ψ ω), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 0.89 ± 0.19 (stat) - 0.13 + 0.07 (syst),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 14.0 ± 1.2 (stat) - 1.5 + 1.1 (syst) - 1.0 + 1.1 (frac(f d, f s)),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 12.7 ± 1.1 (stat) - 1.3 + 0.5 (syst) - 0.9 + 1.0 (frac(f d, f s)), where the last uncertainty is due to the knowledge of f d / f s, the ratio of b-quark hadronization factors that accounts for the different production rate of B 0 and B s 0 mesons. The ratio of the branching fractions of B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ and B s 0 → J / ψ η decays is measured to befrac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B s 0 → J / ψ η)) = 0.90 ± 0.09 (stat) - 0.02 + 0.06 (syst)
