Landuse Conversion Impact Assessment on Landscape Provisioning Service for Rice Sufficiency in Langkat Regency, Indonesia
AbstractLandscape analysis has been performed to assess the impacts of landuse conversion on landscape provisioning service for rice sufficiency in Langkat Regency, Indonesia. In this study, we used 30-m Landsat satellite images in 1989, 2001, and 2010to analyze a change of landuse. Afield survey was implemented to collect socio-economic data in order to examine the driving factor of the changes.. The results showed that forest was the dominant landuse type in 1989 and 2001, but it was converted into oil palm plantation in 2010. The rice land continuously decreased during the periods. Regarding to the analysis, forest and rice lands were fragmented into smaller patches from 1989 to 2001. Indeed, the availability of milled rice in Langkat Regency have decreased; from 328,913.90 ton in 1989 to 19,436.74 ton in 2010
Effects of Micronutrients (Mn and Zn) Fertilizer on the Growth and Production of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.)
Micronutrients Mn and Zn are essential elements required in trace amounts, although they play an important role in plant growth. This study aimed to investigate the impact of manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) fertilizer on growth and productivity of sorghum. This study was conducted in farmer’s field at Pasar 6 Kwala Mencirim Village, Sei Bingai District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatera started in December 2020 until April 2021. A non-factorial randomized block design with eight treatments and four replications was used, consisted of control (without fertilizer), 100% N, P, K (local fertilizer recommendation), and the level of Mn and Zn fertilizer combined with 75% and 50% dose of N, P, K fertilizer. Measurements were taken for plant height and plant production. The data was analyzed using ANOVA and DMRT at a significance level of 5%, and RAE equation. This study showed that Mn and Zn fertilizers significantly affected sorghum growth and production. The highest productivity was 4770 kg ha-1, while the control was 2260 kg ha-1. This study concluded that applying 1 dose Mn and Zn fertilizer combined with 75% N, P, K increase the yields and reduces 25% the use of N, P, K fertilizers in sorghum field

THE USE OF SOIL RENEWAL MATERIALS TO IMPROVE CHEMICAL PROPERTIES IN INCREASING THE RESULTS OF ONIONS FROM TUMBERS
In line with the increase number of populations, the shallot demand is also increase. Thus, some efforts are needed to increase the shallot production on the degraded agricultural land, especially on ultisol. This study aimed to (1) identify the best dose of organic matter and mycorrhiza and the interactions between these two treatments in increasing shallot production on ultisol, (2) analyze the improvement of chemical properties of ultisols using mycorrhiza and organic fertilizer, and (3) measure the increase of vegetative and generatif (production) growth of shallot using these treatments. The study was designed by factorial randomized block design with some levels. Treatment 1 (Mycorrhiza), M0 = Control, M1 = 10 g/polybag, M2 = 20 g/polybag, M3 = 30 g/polybag, M4 = 40 g/polybag, and Treatment 2 (Organic Fertilizer), P0 = Control, P1 = organic fertilizer (0.6 kg/polybag), P2 = organic fertilizer (1.2 kg/polybag), P3 = organic fertilizer (1.8 kg/polybag), P4 = organic fertilizer (2.4 kg/polybag). The results show that the mycorrhiza treatment just give the significant effect on the paramters of the wet and dry shallot weights. The highest result was found in the M4 treatment (13,9 dan 1,79 gr) and the lowest in the M0 treatment (7,89 dan 0,86 gr) for the wet and dry shallot weigths respectively. The organic fertlizer gives significant effects on all parameters, for the highest output was found in the P3 (30,24 cm, 38,47 leaves, 12,75 gr dan 1,58 gr) dan the lowest from P0 (12,58 cm, 9,57 leaves, 5,46 gr dan 0,86 gr) for the parameters of the height, number of leaves, wet weight and dry weight, respectively. The interaction between two paramters did not give the significant effect on the wet and dry weights. Fortunately, the interaction of the M4P4 treatment give significant effect on the height parameter (37,17 cm) and the M1P3 treatment give significant effect on the parameter of the number of leaves (46 number of leaves).The development of the shallot commodity in Indonesia is excelent. This can be monitored by the consumption of shallots which continues to increase in line with the increase in population. Cultivation of shallots usually utilizes bulbs for planting material. This is because the use of bulbs is easier and more practical. Besides that, the success rate is high. This study aimed to (1) identify the best formula/dose of organic matter and mycorrhiza and the interactions between the two treatments in increasing shallot production on ultisols, (2) analyze the improvement of chemical properties of ultisols using soil enhancers, and (3) analyzing the increase in the production of mini bulb shallots using soil amendments. The study used several levels of factorial randomized block design (RBD) with mycorrhiza and organic fertilizer. Treatment 1 (Mycorrhiza), M0 = Control, M1 = 10 g/polybag, M2 = 20 g/polybag, M3 = 30 g/polybag, M4 = 40 g/polybag, and Treatment 2 (Organic Fertilizer), P0 = Control, P1 = organic fertilizer (0.6 kg/polybag), P2 = organic fertilizer (1.2 kg/polybag), P3 = organic fertilizer (1.8 kg/polybag), P4 = organic fertilizer (2.4 kg/polybag). The results showed that the interaction between mycorrhizal treatment and organic fertilizers had a significant effect. The highest yield on shallot plant height was in the M4P4 treatment, while the lowest was in the M3P0 treatment. The Existence of Seed Resource Management Unit and Seed Grower to Support the Sustainable Certified Rice Seed in North Sumatera Province
The usage of qualified seed is one of practices in intensification strategy to minimize the rice yield gap. Unfortunately, its availability in North Sumatera Province is difficult to find. One of the measures to solve the scarcity is by maintaining the existence of the Seed Resources Management Unit (SRMU) and Seed Grower. This study has specific objectives, to inform the total potential production, the kind of varieties and the distribution of certified rice seed from SRMU and Seed Grower and to estimate the opportunity to enhance the certified rice seed sustainability. A descriptive method was used for this study by using observation and comparative analysis techniques. The results show that there are 4,693.5 ton of certified rice seed generated from SRMU and Seed Grower, which is Inpari 32, Mekongga and Inpari 42 are the dominated varieties. This study also found that the majority of certified rice seeds were distributed to Deli Serdang, Serdang Bedagai and Labuhan Batu Regency. By comparing the necessity of certified rice seed which is resulting from the total raw rice land area with the existing production, the existence of SRMU and Seed Grower is significantly needed to support the sustainable certified rice seed in North Sumatera Province
Sustainability Study of Horticultural Development in Mandailing Natal District With RAPFISH-MDS Analysis
Mandailing Natal district as the second largest district in North Sumatra Province has great potential for horticultural development. This study aimed to determine the sustainability level of horticultural development in Mandailing Natal district through 5 dimensions, namely ecological, economic, social, technological and institutional. The RAPFISH-MDS analysis method was used to measure the index and sustainability status. The results showed that the criteria for the sustainability of horticultural development in Mandailing Natal district was quite sustainable (52.61) with the sustainability index value of the ecological, institutional, social, economic and technological dimensions, respectively, 58.06; 56.86; 53.76; 51.99; and 51.08. Sensitive attributes supporting sustainability are erosion rate for the ecological dimension, post harvest management for the economic dimension, extension intensity for the social dimension, land management technology for the technological dimension, and conflicts between farmer groups for the institutional dimension. The realization of horticultural development can be through the development of government programs and extensions that change farmers' perceptions of the environment and the application of eco friendly technologies in their farming
Conservation under regional industrialization: Fragmentation and cover change in a forest reserve

The literature is replete with examples of development in buffer zones that have been detrimental to the conservation efforts of the reserve. Barangay Puting Lupa in Calamba City, Philippines is adjacent to Zone 3 of the Mount Makiling Forest Reserve (MMFR). Despite industrial and settlement development in the periphery, the forest recovered its northwestern sub-watershed, as evidenced by satellite imagery, showing reduced fragmentation. Although the conservation strategy for MMFR changed from settler antagonism to a participative approach, other factors were involved that brought about the possible unassisted forest regrowth. Low density settlement development with corporate social responsibility committed to wildlife conservation; high demand for skilled labor due to rapid regional industrialization and urbanization; an aging corps of original farmers; the high regard of Filipino families for their children’s education for better opportunities in life; and the livelihood preference of family members other than farming in lands with no security of tenure; all combined in an auspicious mix of factors to bring about apparent partial abandonment of farming within Zone 3 of the MMFR and conservation in the buffer zone. Spatial-Temporal Changes in Water Supply and Demand in the Citarum Watershed, West Java, Indonesia Using a Geospatial Approach
Balancing water supply demand is vital for sustaining livelihoods. Spatial mapping and calculating water yield dynamics due to land use changes over decades are needed to manage land resources and formulate ecological protection policies. This study mapped the supply, demand, and matching status of water product service using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Service and Tradeoff (InVEST) biophysical models in the Citarum Watershed (CW) in 2000, 2010, and 2020. Moreover, this study used Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA) and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques to study the agglomeration characteristics and evolutionary trajectories of supply–demand over two decades. The results showed that between 2000–2010 and 2010–2020, the water supply decreased by 19.01 × 108 m3 (18.28%) and 12.97 × 108 m3 (15.27%), respectively. However, the water demand in the same period increased by 6.17 × 108 m3 (23%) and 15.74 × 108 m3 (47%), respectively. Over the decades, the contribution of land use land cover (LULC) changes to variations in water supply has yielded values ranging from 2.87% to 6.37%. The analysis of the water supply–demand imbalance indicated that the entire CW experienced water shortage, and the type of spatial matching for supply and demand is dominated by a high supply and high demand class (16.09% of the total area). Based on the level of water deficit calculation, the upstream and downstream areas were identified as zones that require ecological conservation, while the middle CW area requires ecological restoration or ecological improvement
PENINGKATAN EFISIENSI USAHATANI PADI SAWAH DENGAN PERBAIKAN TEKNOLOGI PEMUPUKAN DI DESA IPAR BONDAR KABUPATEN MANDAILING NATAL, SUMATERA UTARA
ABSTRACT The Enhancement of Rice Farming Efficiency through Fertilization Techonology at Ipar Bondar Village, Mandailing Natal District, North Sumatera Province. Rice productivity at Ipar Bondar Village in Mandailing Natal Regency (4.34 t/ha) is under productivity of North Sumatera Province (4.97 t/ha). Thus, the increasing sustainable productivity effort is needed through fertilization efficiency. The assessment of the improvement of rice fertilization technology was done in 2012 by used five treatments that were applied directly in farmers’ land. Among five treatments, there were three applied an-organic fertilizers and the rest used organic fertilizers (cow shed manure and hay). The objectives of this assessment were to support the achievement of Increasing National Rice Production program by applying specific location of fertilization recommendation, maintained stability of rice land fertility and to increased farmer’s income. The result shown that treatment P4 (290 kg Urea + 110 kg SP36 + 115 kg KCl + 100 kg ZA) gave better production than the others (7.30 t/ha) which was insignificant with treatment P1:6.26 t/ha (5 ton straw + 180 kg Urea + 75 kg SP36) and treatment P5:7.17 t/ha (200 kg Urea + 100 kg SP36 + 50 KCl), while treatment P3 (200 kg Urea + 75 kg SP36 + 50 kg KCl) gave the lowest production (5.02 t/ha). The result of farming analysis shown that treatment P5 gave the highest B/C (2.97) and followed by treatment P1, P4, P3 and treatment P2 at 2.67, 2.66, 1.82 and 1.80 respectively. There were IDR4,895,000 for the net income between the best treatment (P5) and the control (P3). Oleh karena itu perlu upaya peningkatan produktivitas tanaman secara berkelanjutan diantaranya melalui efisiensi pemupukan. Kajian tentang perbaikan teknologi pemupukan padi sawah telah dilakukan pada tahun 2012 di lahan petani menggunakan lima perlakuan pemupukan. Dari lima perlakuan tersebut, tiga diantaranya hanya mengaplikasikan pupuk anorganik dan sisanya dengan pupuk organik (pupuk kandang dan jerami). Kajian ini bertujuan mendukung pencapaian program Peningkatan Produksi Beras Nasional (P2BN) dengan memberikan rekomendasi pemupukan spesifik lokasi, menjaga kestabilan kesuburan lahan sawah dan meningkatkan pendapatan petani. Hasil pengkajian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan P4 (290 kg Urea + 110 kg SP36 + 115 kg KCl + 100 kg ZA) memberikan hasil produksi yang lebih baik yakni 7,3 t/ha yang tidak berbeda nyata dengan perlakuan P1 6,26 t/ha (5 t jerami + 180 kg Urea + 75 kg SP36) dan P5 7,17 t/ha (200 kg Urea + 100 kg SP36 + 50 KCl), sedangkan perlakuan P3 (200 kg Urea + 75 kg SP36 + 50 kg KCl) memberikan hasil produksi terendah yakni 5,02 t/ha. Hasil analisis usahatani menujukkan bahwa perlakuan P5 memberikan nilai rasio B/C tertinggi, yakni 2,97 dan diikuti perlakuan P1, P4, P3 dan P2 dengan masing – masing nilai B/C yaitu 2,67, 2,66, 1,82 dan 1,80. Selisih pendapatan bersih antara perlakuan dengan hasil terbaik (P5) dengan kontrol (P3) yakni Rp4.895.000. Kata kunci: Padi, pupuk organik, pupuk anorganik, analisis usahatani, effisiensi pemupuka
