Introduction. The article examines Yakut heroic olonkho epics — Nyurgun Bootur the Swift by P. Oyunsky and Kulun Kullustuur the Obstinate by I. Timofeev-Teploukhov — for techniques employed to create portraits of main characters. According to N. Yemelyanov, the olonkho Kulun Kullustuur the Obstinate recorded from taleteller I. Timofeev-Teploukhov clusters with earliest patterns of archaic epic, while that of Yakut writer P. Oyunsky (Nyurgun Bootur the Swift) is the first literary adaptation of olonkho texts. The study attempts an insight into how and which particular portrayal techniques were used by P. Oyunsky and I. Timofeev-Teploukhov to depict main characters of theirs. The comparative approach to the narratives recorded in different periods shall make it possible to trace the use of portrayal techniques, which shall underline the unique artistic features characterizing each of the taletellers, and show how such portrayal patterns developed to gain deeper associative essentials in further olonkho texts. Goals. The study aims to identify some distinct features inherent to the techniques of creating main characters’ portraits in the olonkhos Nyurgun Bootur the Swift and Kulun Kullustuur the Obstinate, and outline ethnic specifics in portrayal characteristics. To facilitate this, the paper shall classify portrayals, articulate types of techniques and their functions in portraying a main character, identify stable formulas employed to depict heroes, determine specific features of portrayal as a key technique for the making of an epic hero. The work reviews the existing types of epic portraits, their functions and attributes, examines some visual means serving to unveil the images of main characters. Results. The study attests to the examined narratives are characterized by an increased stability of depictive portrayals with peripheral parts (artistic and emotional epithets) tending to vary. Each such depictive portrayal proves multifunctional, semantically wide, and technically relevant. The descriptions of the heroes’ appearances are somewhat idealized and rich in comparisons, repetitions, evaluative epithets. Portrayal agendas of P. Oyunsky vary through history and depend on actual artistic methods and style employed by the author who pays special attention to fictional details depicted in the context of folk traditions. The study of the techniques helps identify which innovative tools P. Oyunsky used when he was creating his Nyurgun Bootur the Swift

THE GREAT RUSSIAN PIANO TRADITION: SELECTED REPERTOIRE BY TCHAIKOVSKY, RACHMANINOFF AND PROKOFIEV

    No full text
This dissertation explores representative piano music by three great Russian composers: Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev. The areas of research include: 1) the short character piece; 2) the Russian piano transcription tradition; 3) the concerto and sonata cycle; 4) extra-musical imagery; 5) the influence of popular and dance music of the period. Perhaps the most important result of this research is learning how the art of incorporating a singing quality at the piano stands at the center of Russian pianistic heritage. The first recital features compositions by Sergei Prokofiev. The Seventh Sonata exhibits rebellious, uncompromisingly dissonant treatment of its musical content. Ten Pieces from "Cinderella" shows an ascetic approach to piano texture - a common characteristic in Prokofiev's late works. The Third Concerto is Prokofiev's masterpiece in the genre. One of the 20th century's most performed concerti, it overflows with pianistic challenges. For my second dissertation recital, I have chosen Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky's The Seasons. These short character pieces were inspired by literary sources. The text portrays Russian rural life, nature, moments of intimate reflection, and imaginary experiences and impressions. Tchaikovsky's gift as a melodist and remarkable musical individualist is represented in his two Nocturnes as well as in the Nutcracker Suite, masterfully transcribed by Mikhail Pletnev. The final program features Sergei Rachmaninoff's Ten Preludes, Op. 23, regarded as a culmination of the turn-of-the-century grand Russian pianistic style. The Fantasy Pieces helped establish Rachmaninoff's reputation as a pianist-composer, a profoundly lyrical poet of the piano. The three Rachmaninoff transcriptions, the Minuet, the Hopak and the Polka de W.R. preserve the spirit of the Golden Era's musical salon. These pieces were written to delight and dazzle audiences with their bold character, musical taste, virtuosic tricks and technical finesse. The three recitals comprising this dissertation were presented in Gildenhorn Recital at the University of Maryland School of Music on November 13, 2010, April 11, 2011 and February 27, 2012. The recitals were recorded on compact discs and are archived within the University of Maryland Libraries

Background and Objective: Epidemiological data obtained during the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic suggests that COVID-19 mortality has specific age and gender associations. However, limited epidemiological studies explored specific populational risk factors, including comorbidities, and patient clinical characteristics. The main aim of our retrospective cohort study was to analyze associations between age, gender, and comorbidities in deceased COVID-19 patients. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis was performed to assess significant risk factors in adult patients deceased from COVID-19 infection by evaluating Electronic Medical Records and post-mortem analysis in COVID-19 patients deceased between April 2020 to October 2020. All patients underwent post-mortem evaluation along with medical history analysis, including data on disease duration, hospitalization, and clinical peculiarities. Results: Medical records of 1487 COVID-19 patients revealed that the prevalence of males was higher (by 23%) than females; the median age for males was 71 years of age whereas for females it was 78. The most prevalent comorbid pathologies were: hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and cancer. Males are at significantly increased risk of lethal outcome, even in younger age groups, with comorbid conditions. Conclusion: The study concluded that comorbidities, such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, cancer are the most important risk factors for comorbid mortality in COVID-19 patients. In addition to lung damage, multiple organ dysfunctions may be a crucial reason for COVID-19 induced death. Special precautions, such as early hospitalization, increased monitoring, and preventative tactics should be taken for at-risk patients
