Combining spectral and polarimetric imaging has gained much interest in the past few years, but the proposed setups remain rather limited or difficult to implement. In this manuscript, after a review of the existing Spectro polarimetric systems, we design and implement our own system based on a stereo setup using 2 off-the-shelf RGB polarimetric cameras. It produces data hypercubes with 6 spectral channels combined with 4 polarization channels. With proper calibration using a reference chart, we were first able to reconstruct reflectance spectra in the visible range with a significant improvement compared to a classical RGB system. The polarimetric capability of our system also made it possible to improve the evaluation of the reflectance spectra of real specular objects by removing the saturated component which usually alters the reflectance evaluation. Our experiments were conducted using a spectropolarimetric image database that we made publicly available

Responding to the Needs and Challenges of Arts Entrepreneurs: An Exploratory Study of Arts Entrepreneurship in North Carolina Higher Education

abstract: To address the call for examination of academic and professional approaches to arts entrepreneurship, we summarize the academic arts entrepreneurship programs in the State of North Carolina and conduct a pilot study with data gathered from arts entrepreneurs who attended the 5th annual Southern Entrepreneurship in the Arts Conference in Greensboro, North Carolina. Our review of the descriptive data reveals that arts entrepreneurs face a variety of needs and challenges, which are psychological (e.g., peer support) as well as technical (e.g., start-up skills). These findings suggest that, as prior literature stresses, arts entrepreneurship education programs should entail both the “entrepreneurship mindset” aspect and the “venture creation” aspect, so we advocate a holistic approach that combines both these perspectives with other related courses. We conclude, based on our exploratory study, that collaborative and flexible approaches, such as cross-campus programs for arts entrepreneurship education in higher education, could have beneficial outcomes for art entrepreneurs. Implications for future research are discussed

No Return Ticket: CBSA Deportation in Canada

Viewed through the theoretical lens of securitization theory & moral regulation, this thesis examines deportation and detainment in Canada across CBSA jurisdictional regions. Furthermore, this thesis attempted to explain how deportation and detainment trends changed since 2005, and what may be possible causes. Being a descriptive analysis study, this thesis utilizes a documentary research methodology to gather data, while using current literature to explain border security and deportation in Canada—bolstering results from the analysis on deportation and detainment statistics. The findings from the results ultimately provide new insight for CBSA, as well as for future research into the efficacy of operations of CBSA and the status quo on border security. Findings from this thesis show deportation rates, across the majority of CBSA jurisdictional regions, have been steadily declining since 2005. Furthermore, it was found as deportation rates decline, average days detained and detention rates have increased nationally since 2005. Although this thesis was able to answer its research question in part, it was not able to answer any causes of change because of a lack of literature on the topic—which is a gap of knowledge future researchers can address

    Optimized Class-Separability in Hyperspectral Images

    No full text
International audienceImage visualization techniques are mostly based on three bands as RGB color composite channels for human eye to characterize the scene. This, however, is not effective in case of hyper-spectral images (HSI) because they contain dozens of informative spectral bands. To eliminate redundancy of spectral information among these bands, dimensionality reduction (DR) is applied while at the same trying to retain maximum information. In this paper, we propose a new method of information-preserved hyper-spectral satellite image visualization that is based on fusion of unsupervised band selection techniques and color matching function (CMF) stretching. The results show consistent, edge-preserved and pre-attentive feature less images with high class separability. Different visualization techniques are compared to demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme that can prompt an important advancement in the field

PREVALENCE OF SKIN PROBLEMS AND IMPACT ON QUALITY OF LIFE IN YOUNG SWIMMERS

Background: A cross-sectional research design was used to measure the prevalence of skin problems among competing swimmers and to measure the effect of skin problems on swimming and overall quality of life. Methods: A total number of 42 swimmers participated in this study. A semi-structured questionnaire was developed to identify self-reported skin problems and their relationship to the perceived pool environment. Effect of skin problems on the quality of life was also measured. Data analysis was done using Chi-Square, Pearson Correlation and ANOVA.  A total number of 42 male and female swimmers with a mean age of 20.0 participated in this study. Results: There were 45.2% male and 54.8% female swimmers. The majority of the participants (52.4%) were 3rd year students. Overall prevalence of skin problems in the last one year was 78.6% with 16.7% cases of athlete’s foot, 9.5% cases of ear infections, 9.5% cases of eczema, 85% cases of itching, 50% cases of rashes and only 2.4% cases of warts. There were 42.9% participants, who perceived swimming pool as the cause of their skin problems. Only 33.3% participants received treatment for their skin problems. Only 28.6% reported having complications because of skin problems like getting hospitalized in 9.5% cases. Only a few participants reported having an effect on their quality of life i.e. missing out training (19%) and missing out participation in an upcoming competition (11.9%). Chi-Square revealed significant differences (p=0.000) between the prevalence of skin problems of male and female swimmers. A significant positive relationship (r=0.048) was found between perceived swimming pool environment and skin problems. There was no significant effect of skin problems on the quality of life (p=0.208) of male and female swimmers. Conclusion: Significant differences between the prevalence of skin problems of male and female swimmers was observed. Female swimmers experienced skin problems more frequently as compared to the male swimmers. Â
