So Deep in the Mountains: Saigyo\u27s Yama fukami poems and Reclusion in Medieval Japanese Poetry
Examining a set of poems exchanged by the monks Saigyō and Jakuzen, the author argues for their importance as records of a crucial moment in the development of religious reclusion imagery in waka. The author focuses on Saigyō, demonstrating how he created a new poetic space marked by a deepening of the tropes of sōan and yamazato, yielding a previously unarticulated realm of expression for his rigorous ideal of mountain seclusion. As “grass huts” and “mountain homes” became more commonly associated with hermits monks such as Saigyō, many of whom in fact spent the majority of their lives in the remote and indigent circumstances of mountain reclusion, the imagery relating to these spaces both shifted and expanded. Saigyō was a key figure in this development in Japanese poetics, and his yama fukami poems played an important role in the deepening and expansion of these topoi in the medieval period
Potential Construction of a Geopark in Small Islands: Preliminary Qualitative Action Research on the Geopark Concept in the Mishima Village, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan

小島嶼におけるジオパーク構築の可能性 -日本国鹿児島県三島村のジオパーク構想に関する実践的研究-
Geotourism is a new form of tourism, and the potential of constructing a geopark was examined with respect to a small-sized community facing with aging and depopulation―the Mishima village in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Among the associate members of the Japanese Geoparks Network aiming at the authorization of geoparks, only the Mishima village consists of islands as of September 2013. The present study is the first to address,at least in Japan, Korea, and China, the issue on the potential functionality of geotourism in small islands. Qualitative action research by a hearing investigation was conducted to collect views about the Mishima village geopark concept from Mishima village office staff and Satsuma Iojima residents. The present study revealed the theoretical potentiality of the concept, the small island's advantage of being a “gateway for socioeconomic vitalization.”based on spatial completeness. Geopark and geotourism can be geoecological approaches that contribute to the formation of a sustainable community and sustainable tourism in small islands.

Ecotourism and environmental education: Significance and status quo in Japan
application/pdfEnvironmental education is necessary for promoting ecotourism; however, the reasons for this have not been adequately analyzed. This study addresses the research gap by investigating the structure of the definition of ecotourism with the application of analysis of genus–differentia definition. Meanwhile, the status quo of environmental education and ecotourism in Japan have also been investigated. The findings indicate that ecotourism is a value-laden concept, making it necessary to provide environmental education. Additionally, there is a mismatch between the demand for experiential environmental education activities and the supply of environmental education in ecotourism. Thus, people’s awareness of ecotourism and environmental education should be raised, and the environmental education functions of tour guides and tourism facilities should receive greater emphasis.本論文は「九州地区国立大学教育系・文系研究論文集」Vol.10,No.1に査読を経て受理された。journal articl
Quantitative content analysis of codes of conduct for ecotourism in Japan
Ecotourism is becoming an increasingly popular around the world, but negative consequences may result from inappropriate stakeholder behaviors with respect to it. Therefore, it is essential to manage ecotourism activities to ensure environmental conservation and future sustainable development. Codes of conduct are highly important voluntary means of managing ecotourism in Japan. This study explores the content of codes of conduct for ecotourism in Japan using quantitative content analysis. The means-end chain theory is adopted to investigate the attributes, the potential benefits, and the underlying values of ecotourism codes of conduct. The findings indicated that ecotourism codes of conduct in Japan sufficiently focus on the natural environment but ignore the economic aspects of ecotourism. Furthermore, the codes are mainly oriented toward tour guides and tourists while incompletely incorporate other key stakeholders, including local residents and tourism businesses. It is recommended that the design of codes of conduct can follow the pattern from “end” to “means”. These findings may provide guidance to support the modification and improvement of content of ecotourism codes of conduct in Japan and thereby promote ecotourism management.Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management, 58, pp.209-213; 2024journal articl

The Effect of Deep Sea Water on Textural Properties and Microstructure of Japanese Noodle (Udon)
Searching for GRBs at VHE with MAGIC: the status before CTA
Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are one of the main targets for current and next
generation Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). Given their
transient behavior, especially in the case of their prompt emission phase,
performing fast follow-up observations is challenging for IACTs, which have a
narrow field of view and limited duty cycle. Despite this, MAGIC plays a major
role in the search for Very High Energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray emission
from GRBs: this is possible thanks to its fast repositioning speed, low energy
threshold and high sensitivity at the lowest energies. In 2013 the MAGIC GRB
automatic procedure was upgraded, increasing the number of GRBs followed in the
prompt and early afterglow phases and decreasing dramatically hardware failures
during fast repositioning. Currently, only GRB 190114C was firmly detected in
the VHE band, while for other GRBs no significant detection was achieved. In
such a case, upper limits (ULs) can give insight into the physics driving such
eluding sources, especially on their emission mechanisms. In this contribution
we report on the status of the GRB follow-up with MAGIC and focus on the ULs
and results obtained from a sample of GRBs observed between 2013 and 2018. This
GRB catalog is the result of the MAGIC well-designed and tested follow-up
procedure, and it serves as a precursor of GRBs observation with the next
generation IACT system, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA)
