Complement clauses in Portuguese: syntax and acquisition/ edited by Ana Lúcia Santos, Anabela Gonçalves.
Includes bibliographical references and index."This volume addresses core issues on complement clauses, focusing on Portuguese (European, Brazilian and Mozambican varieties). It contributes to the discussion of complementation, providing an overview of how theoretical syntax and acquisition studies may combine to broaden our knowledge about the topic. The articles are organized in two sections, each one followed by a comment paper: the first section, more theoretical in its nature, gathers contributions analyzing major syntactic aspects of complementation in Portuguese, from a synchronic and a diachronic point of view; the second section includes articles on L1 and L2 acquisition of Portuguese complementation. Both sections especially focus on infinitival structures; mood selection and the interpretation of subjects in finite complement clauses are also topics of particular relevance. The volume is meant for researchers and students interested in formal syntax and acquisition in general and Portuguese syntax and acquisition in particular"--Complement clauses in Portuguese: Some facts and open questions / Anabela Gonçalves & Ana Lúcia Santos -- Control of inflected infinitives in European Portuguese / Michelle Sheehan -- Inflected infinitives in Brazilian Portuguese and the theory of Control / Marcello Modesto -- Infinitival complements of causative/perception verbs in a diachronic perspective / Ana Maria Martins -- Controlled overt pronouns as specificational predicates / Pilar P. Japanese Education in the city of Santos (1908-1943)
In 1908, the Kasatu Maru arrived at the port of Santos, in the coast of São Paulo
State, bringing the first Japanese immigrants to work in the coffee farms and starting
the History of Japanese Immigration in Brazil. From then on, the Japanese spread
through several regions of the State, founding new communities. Some of these
immigrants decided to return, in that same year, to the city of Santos. A common
hallmark, after the forming of a community, was the building of a schoolhouse. That
also happened in the coastal city, where the Japanese struggled to guarantee the
teaching of their native language to new generations by building and maintaining
their own schools, especially the Escola Japonesa de Santos (Japanese School of
Santos), whose main function was to centralize the study of the Japanese language
in the city. This work was intended as a study of the Japanese schooling in the city of
Santos, its progress and relevance to the local Japanese community, from the arrival
of the first immigrants to the year of 1943, when, along with German and Italian
natives, they were banned from the region by a decree from the federal government,
leading to the shutdown of Japanese schools. For that purpose, a research was done
in public and private archives, where a wide range of documents was found, such as
certificates, judicial files, newspapers, photographs, etc. Oral History interviews were
also utilized to obtain life histories, with a thematic focus on the Japanese education,
from former students and other persons close to the community, such as friends,
descendents of employees, etc. The research was based, among others, in the
works of authors Wilma Therezinha Fernandes de Andrade and Ana Lúcia Duarte
Lanna, for both explore the changes the city of Santos went through in the late
nineteen century and early twentieth, when the first Japanese immigrants arrived. It
is also based in the works of Tomoo Handa, which offers a great retrospect of the
history of Japanese immigration in Brazil, Hiroshi Saito, whose theory defends a
division of the Japanese immigration in Brazil in three different periods, and in the
work of Zeila de Brito Fabri Demartini, dedicated to the education of Japanese
immigrants in the country, mainly in the State of São Paulo. As its final
considerations, it was noted that education was highly valued among the Japanese,
for, in the absence of their own schools, parents enrolled their children in elementary
schools, even if that meant compromising the teaching of their native language. It
was also noted that the Escola Japonesa served as a cultural and administrative
center for the Japanese community as well, besides being a regular school that met
all the official requirements.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPE
The Free Educational School of Santos: A study of the Educational Association José Bonifácio 1928-1933
This Master¿s Thesis contains the research results related to the foundation of the educational school named ¿Associação Instrutiva José Bonifácio¿ in Santos (SP). With the enactment of the law 2.269/1927 (SP). It is limited between the years 1928, which is the year of foundation of free educational schools of the State of São Paulo, matched with the capital¿s oficial educational school, and 1933, year of the state¿s educational code promulgation. This reform is the consequence of the laws related to the public instruction, previously not allowed to the city halls and private people to act in the teaching area, previously dependent of the State. The raise in the number of schools had the goal to form new elementary teachers and to reduce the illiteracy in rural areas. The research methodology was the historical study of the teaching institution documents and the state¿s legislation. The establishment of an institution focused on the teacher¿s qualification and recognized by the State of São Paulo occurred previously in regions of lower political and economic expression, in comparison to Santos, and the creation of the free educational schools and the AIJB, professional's qualification school, contributed to the number raise of these professionals for the city of Santos, its region and the São Paulo state

The study aimed to assess the prevalence of Waterborne Diseases (WD) in four neighborhoods in the northwest region that differ in basic sanitation infrastructure from 2015 to 2021, according to age group, gender, year, WD, and flood risk. Health care data from Basic Health Units (UBS's) and Emergency Care Units (UPA's) were collected from the Municipal Health Department of Santos, while hospitalization information was obtained through the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH-SUS). Percentage calculations were made to assess the frequency of cases in each region - with stilt houses (RCP) and without stilt houses (RSP) - for each variable, type of care, and flood risk - Floodable Areas (AA) and Non-Floodable Areas (ANA). Prevalence rates (PR) of WD per 10,000 inhabitants were calculated, and proportion comparison tests were conducted to evaluate differences between them, adopting a significance level of 5%. The Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) was used to analyze the geographical distribution of cases considering the flood risk in residential areas - classified as floodable and non-floodable. No statistically significant differences were observed between RSP and RCP in UBS's (PR = 41.4; PR = 40.2; p-value = 0.980). In UPA's, the highest WD rate was in RSP (PR = 628.9; p-value <0.001). However, hospitalizations for WD were more frequent in RCP (PR = 9.8). Women from RSP had the highest rates in UBS cases (PR = 46.3) and UPA cases (PR = 770.5) compared to women from RCP. There was no difference between men in both regions in UBS care (PR = 41.9; PR = 41.7; p-value = 0.970), and in UPA's, residents of RSP had a higher proportion (PR = 602.7). When comparing genders in both regions, in UBS, women from RSP predominated (PR = 46.3), but there was no difference between genders in RCP (PR = 38.9; 41.7; p-value = 0.183). Differential stability of 2'F-ANA*RNA and ANA*RNA hybrid duplexes: roles of structure, pseudohydrogen bonding, hydration, ion uptake and flexibility
14 pags., 7 figs., 3 tabs.Hybrids of RNA with arabinonucleic acids 2′F-ANA and ANA have very similar structures but strikingly different thermal stabilities. We now present a thorough study combining NMR and other biophysical methods together with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations on a fully modified 10-mer hybrid duplex. Comparison between the solution structure of 2′F-ANA•RNA and ANA•RNA hybrids indicates that the increased binding affinity of 2′F-ANA is related to several subtle differences, most importantly a favorable pseudohydrogen bond (2′F-purine H8) which contrasts with unfavorable 2′-OH-nucleobase steric interactions in the case of ANA. While both 2′F-ANA and ANA strands maintained conformations in the southern/eastern sugar pucker range, the 2′F-ANA strand's structure was more compatible with the A-like structure of a hybrid duplex. No dramatic differences are found in terms of relative hydration for the two hybrids, but the ANA•RNA duplex showed lower uptake of counterions than its 2′F-ANA•RNA counterpart. Finally, while the two hybrid duplexes are of similar rigidities, 2′F-ANA single strands may be more suitably preorganized for duplex formation. Thus the dramatically increased stability of 2′F-ANA•RNA and ANA•RNA duplexes is caused by differencesin at least four areas, of which structure and pseudohydrogen bonding are the most important. © The Author(s) 2010.
