Optical Self-Organization in Bulk and Multiquantum Well GaAlAs Microresonators
We have observed optical patterns in GaAs/GaAlAs vertical-cavity microresonators. Rolls, rhombs, or hexagons were obtained depending on the wavelength detuning. We show that cavity thickness fluctuations contribute to pattern selection
Vertical-external-cavity semiconductor lasers
Surface-emitting semiconductor lasers can make use of external cavities and optical pumping techniques to achieve a combination of high continuous-wave output power and near-diffraction-limited beam quality that is not matched by any other type of semiconductor source. The ready access to the laser mode that the external cavity provides has been exploited for applications such as intra-cavity frequency doubling and passive mode-locking. The purpose of this Topical Review is to outline the operating principles of these versatile lasers and summarize the capabilities of devices that have been demonstrated so far. Particular attention is paid to the generation of near-transform-limited sub-picosecond pulses in passively mode-locked surface-emitting lasers, which are potentially of interest as compact sources of ultrashort pulses at high average power that can be operated readily at repetition rates of many gigahertz
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
A polariton condensate in a photonic crystal potential landscape
This work has been supported by the State of Bavaria and the Australian Research Council (ARC). The authors thank M D Fraser, N Y Kim, Y Yamamoto, and V D Kulakovskii for fruitful discussions. This publication was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the University of Wuerzburg in the funding programme Open Access Publishing. The possibility of investigating macroscopic coherent quantum states in polariton condensates and of engineering polariton landscapes in semiconductors has triggered interest in using polaritonic systems to simulate complex many-body phenomena. However, advanced experiments require superior trapping techniques that allow for the engineering of periodic and arbitrary potentials with strong on-site localization, clean condensate formation, and nearest-neighbor coupling. Here we establish a technology that meets these demands and enables strong, potentially tunable trapping without affecting the favorable polariton characteristics. The traps are based on a locally elongated microcavity which can be formed by standard lithography. We observe polariton condensation with non-resonant pumping in single traps and photonic crystal square lattice arrays. In the latter structures, we observe pronounced energy bands, complete band gaps, and spontaneous condensation at the M-point of the Brillouin zone.Peer reviewe
Spontaneous nonground state polariton condensation in pillar microcavities
We observe spontaneously driven nonground state polariton condensation in GaAs pillar microcavities under nonresonant optical excitation. We identify a regime where the interplay of exciton-exciton and pair polariton scattering can lead to mode switching from nonground state to ground state polariton condensation. A simple kinematic model satisfactorily describes the observed mode switching as each of the above scattering mechanisms becomes prevalent at different carrier densities.<br/
Protecting Animals 36: Author Witi Ihimaera
In this very special episode of Knowing Animals I am joined by beloved New Zealand author Witi Ihimaera. Witi has written many books featuring nonhuman animals. He offers us a non-colonial lens through which to think about the human/nonhuman relationship
