Timber and the Forest Service
David A. Clary, former chief historian of the US Forest Service, is the author or coauthor of several books on American history, including The Place Where Hell Bubbled Up: A History of the First National Park and Adopted Son: Washington, Lafayette, and the Friendship That Saved the Revolution.This Kansas Open Books title is funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Humanities Open Book Program.Nearly one-quarter of America is covered with forests almost 800 million acres. There are 151 national forests, comprising close to 200 million acres in thirty-nine states and Puerto Rico. These protected lands are administered by the U.S. Forest Service, an agency of the Department of Agriculture. David Clary here examines the history of and controversies surrounding the Forest Services policies for timber management in our national forests. In this first in-depth study of the political, bureaucratic, social, and ideological relationships between the Forest Service and the production of timber, Clary traces the continuity in the agency's outlook from its creation in 1905 through fears of a timber famine to the clear-cutting controversies of the mid 1970s. He shows convincingly that, despite legislative remedies and agency reports, timber production has remained the agency's first priority and that other (multiple uses recreation, watershed protection, wilderness, livestock grazing, and wildlife management were regulated so that they would not interfere with potential timber harvests. Throughout its history, the agency is shown to have been enchanted with the objective of producing timber. Clary's theme, in what he describes as an administrative, political, scientific, and anecdotal history, is that the Forest Service exhibited consistent actions and attitudes over the years and failed to confront realistically changes in the national culture that altered what the American people wanted from the forests and the Forest Service

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SELF QUESTIONING STRATEGY IN TEACHING READING NARRATIVE TEXT
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to find out how effective Self Questioning Strategy in teaching reading narrative text to the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Pontianak in Academic Year 2014/2015. This research was a pre-experimental study. This research involves pre-test and post-test to measure the effectiveness of the treatment.The technique of collecting data is measurement technique. The form of the instruments are multiple choices. The instruments to collect the data are pre test and post test. Pre-test was administered before the treatment is given. Meanwhile, post-test is administered after the treatment is given. The different mean score of pre-test and post-test is respectively 41.14 and 55.71. The t-test is higher with 3.09 is higher than t-table with 2.032 for the degree of freedom of 34 and the Effect Size is 0.53 and categorized moderate effect.The result shows that the effectiveness of self questioning strategy in teaching reading narrative text is moderate. Key words: Self Questioning Strategy, reading comprehension Abstrak: Tujuan dari riset ini adalah untuk mengetahui seberapa efektifnya Strategi Self Questioning dalam mengajarkan teks naratif kepada siswa SMA Negeri 5 Pontianak pada tahun ajaran 2014/2015. Riset ini menggunakan pre test dan post test untuk mengukur keefektifan treatment tersebut. Tehnik pengumpulan data dalam riset ini adalah measurement tehnique. Bentuk test yang digunakan adalah pilihan ganda. Test yang digunakan dalam pengumpulan data adalah pre test dan post test. Pre test dilakukan sebelum treatment diberikan. Sementara itu, post test dilakukan setelah treatment diberikan. Perbedaan nilai mean pada pre test dan post test masing-masing adalah 41.14 dan 55.71. Nilai t-test yang didapatkan adalah 3.09 yang mana lebih tinggi dari nilai t-table yaitu 2.032 untuk degree of freedom 34 dan nilai Effect Size-nya yaitu 0.53 dan dikategorikan cukup berpengaruh. Substance use, self-stigma, and help seeking among military members: Exploring the utility of the emerging adulthood theory
Background: Emerging adults (18-29 year olds) have the highest rates of substance use across the lifespan and many military members often have even higher rates of substance use and related consequences. Unfortunately, those most in need of mental health treatment perceive greater stigma and are less likely to pursue treatment for their past trauma or current mental health or substance use needs. Moreover, few treatments address the unique military culture or one’s developmental status when intervening. This study explored the utility of the five Emerging Adulthood Theory dimensions, a human developmental lens, to military members. It sought to understand developmental factors related to high rates of substance use among military populations, while also providing culturally responsive implications for social workers assisting this vulnerable population. In addition, it evaluated if one interview had a positive impact on substance use frequency, general help seeking behaviors, and stigma on help seeking behaviors.
Methods: To answer these research questions, I completed in-depth qualitative interviews utilizing motivational interviewing spirit with 26 emerging adult military members who have high risk substance use behaviors. I asked about their experiences developing into an adult, substance use behaviors, barriers to receiving mental health treatment, and ways to reduce mental health stigma. Most interviews were conducted via Zoom (n=22) with some in-person (n=4). I collected pre-test and post-test data on substance use frequency, self-stigma, and help-seeking behaviors, with a 100% follow-up rate. Qualitative interviews were analyzed following reflexive-thematic driven analysis and were coded using Nvivo. Rigorous coding procedures integrated inter-rater and intra-rater reliability procedures. Quantitative data were cleaned and analyzed in both Excel and SPSS using dependent samples t-tests.
Results: We found that this sample related to the five Emerging Adulthood Theory dimensions, but in different ways than is proposed by the theory. We believe these various themes could be attributed to their immersion in military culture. Moreover, data shows that a one-time interview has positive effects on substance use behaviors, help-seeking and stigma about mental health treatment. Follow-up data shows that the research study was well received by participants as they could share their stories, think critically about military culture, and have a genuine conversation with a social worker regarding their military experiences.
Implications: Findings provide the framework to effectively support emerging adult military members with high risk substance behaviors. Future research should integrate these findings to produce culturally adaptive interventions to reduce substance use behaviors and stigma around mental health treatment while also encouraging help seeking behaviors. This study fills the literature gap of more thoroughly understanding the utility of the theory among military members. TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE TO THE BEGINNERS
his study aims to find out the appropriate method to teach English to the beginners. Also, the finding of this research is for publication in the journal. This study is conducted by using online qualitative survey technique. The subjects of this study were teachers who teach English for beginners in Pontianak and its surrounding. The data were collected by a set of close-ended statements in an online questionnaire and also an online interview. The findings showed that there were various methods that can be applied in teaching English to the beginners, and those methods depend on the students’ learning style. Since students’ learning style are different from one to another, the teachers may use various methods in their classroom. However, even when the methods are various, not every method is effective in teaching English to the beginners. Partnering to Cultivate Healthy Eating Fanatics
According to the data from County Health Rankings and Roadmaps[2], Brown County ranks 69th in both health outcomes and health factors. Specifically, Brown County has high levels of adult and child obesity [2, 9]. Fruit and vegetable consumption is below recommended levels [1]. Such statistics indicate a need for Extension programs to promote healthy eating behaviors. Researchers and practitioners recommend the use of engaging and interactive techniques, including hands-on experience with food, to teach about healthy eating behaviors [3, 5]. Research has shown that children who participated in cooking classes increased their consumption of fruits, vegetables, and dietary fiber; demonstrated a greater willingness to try new foods, and developed increased confidence in the ability to prepare foods [6, 8]. Nutrition knowledge and skills related to healthy eating have been linked with making better food choices and promoting dietary change [4, 10]. Furthermore, people who prepare their own food are more likely to meet dietary recommendations [7]. However, there is an increase in meals consumed away from home and a decline in cooking skills [10]. C.H.E.F. (Cultivating Healthy Eating Fanatics) was a food and nutrition day camp piloted in Brown County in 2017. C.H.E.F. aligns with the national 4-H mission mandate of healthy living and also the OSU Extension impact area of health and wellness. The objectives were for participants to: learn proper food handling and preparation, including food safety; plan a daily menu following MyPlate; create a budget for a meal; properly set a table; plan, budget, shop for, prepare and serve a meal; and become aware of the Ohio 4-H food and nutrition project offerings and the requirements to complete the project through county and state judging. The target audience for C.H.E.F. was 4-H members in Brown County age 9 and older. Older youth (age 14+) who were involved in foods projects participated in the hands-on activities and also assisted with teaching some components of the program. One of the most original aspects of the program was the start-to-finish aspect of meal planning, shopping, and food preparation. The participants developed a meal plan, created a shopping list, took a field trip to the grocery store to purchase their items, and returned to the kitchen to cook their meal. Youth were tasked to cook a meal for a family of four using $15, which is based on the USDA guidelines for a moderate meal plan. They were also expected to meet the MyPlate guidelines. DEVELOPING INTERACTIVE MULTIMEDIA TO TEACH READING NARATIVE TEXT USING LECTORA INSPIRE
This study was to develop interactive multimedia created using the Lectora Inspire application to assist the teaching and learning process in reading narrative text material. This study involved an English teacher at SMPN 12 Pontianak City. This research method is development research which consists of three ADDIE phases (analysis, design, and development). This product is made to assist teachers in teaching reading narrative text material. The need analysis obtained by interviewing teacher to get information of what the teacher and students need. Interactive multimedia was designed using Lectora Inspire in form application. The Content material was adapted to the syllabus and examples of narrative texts suggested by the teacher. The content Material displayed attractively using cartoons, interesting animations, videos and quiz made by researchers. The final product is validated by the teacher using the assessment rubric. The results of the validation carried out by the teacher showed that the final product of interactive multimedia considered were “very good” with the percentage is 86.6%, which means it is good and suitable to be used in the teaching and learning process. Therefore, interactive multimedia product was considered very good and worthy to be used as a medium for teaching and learning reading narrative text for teacher and students
THE TEACHERS’ EFFICACY IN DESIGNING LESSON PLAN FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL AND THE TEACHERS’ BACKGROUNDS
The purpose of this study is to investigate how well is the teachers’ efficacy in designing simplified lesson plan for primary school, the relationship between teachers’ efficacy in designing lesson plan and teachers’ backgrounds and to find out what background that perform an efficacious result in designing simplified lesson plan for primary school. The participants of this research were teachers of English subject in private schools of Pontianak city, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia. There were twenty teachers according to the data gathered from Institution of Educational Quality Assurance, LPMP (Lembaga Peningkatan Mutu Pendidikan) Pontianak City for academic year 2020/2021. It consisted of sixteen (16) female teachers and four (4) male teachers. The qualitative data collected in form of teachers’ lesson plan which were analysed and identified. The result discovered that the teachers have an “average to good” efficacy in designing lesson plan. It was also dicoverd there was relationship between teachers’ efficacy and teachers’ background. Those twenty lesson plans identifed that certified teachers performed an excellent efficacy in designing lesson plans. The teachers who graduated from English teacher training program bachelor also showed good efficacy in designing lesson plan. Therefore male teachers performed good efficacy too in designing lesson plan. The result answered the research questions that there was relationship between teachers’ efficacy in designing lesson plan and teachers’ backgrounds. The teachers’ backgrounds such as certified teachers, teachers who graduated from English teacher training program and male teachers, they performed an efficacious result in designing simplified lesson plan
Synthetic ionophores for cations
A series of 14-crown-4 derivatives bearing amide substituents have been prepared in order to develop ionophores selective for lithium. Complexation with lithium ions was monitored using (^13)C and IR spectroscopy and liquid membrane electrodes prepared and evaluated using a fixed interference method. The highest selectivities with respect to sodium ions were obtained for di-n-butylamide-oNPOE and a di-n-benzylamide-oNPOE derivatives; log(^POT)(_ Li,Na) = -2.92 and -2.93 respectively. A series of amide and amide-ester N-functionalised coronands based upon [12]-N202 , [15]-N203 and [18]-N204 parent macrocycles has been prepared. Complexation of certain alkali and alkaline-earth cations was monitored by (^13)C NMR and IR specteoscopy, enthalpies of complexation measured in methanolic solution using micro-calorimetry and stability constants measured in aqueous media by potentiometric methods. Strong complexation of Ca2+ in aqueous media was observed with good selectivity over Na+ and K+. Lower free energies of binding for Ha cations were displayed by the tertiary amide derivative (of [12]N(_2)O(_2)), than by its secondary analogue, despite displaying higher enthalpies of complexation. Thus the lower free energies result from significantly lower entropies of complexation. Two sets of oxa-amide and oxa-ester tripodal ligands have been prepared and solvent membranes fabricated. The effects of the nature of the plasticiser, bis (butylpentyl)adipate (BBPA) verses o -nitrophenyl octyl ether (oNPOE), the ligand structure and the ionic strength of the analyte solution on the electrode response to la and Ila cations were studied. The performance of the oxa-amides was superior to that of the oxa-esters particularly at higher ionic strengths, however super-Nernstian responses were observed with the more charge-dense ions in the presence of chloride and/or with the less polar plasticiser BBPA. Measurements of intracellular sodium concentration could be effected with a sensor based upon bis (N,N',N"-tributyl)-4,4',4"-propylidintris(3-oxabutanamide) and oNPOE for which -log KPOT = 2.64 and -log KPOT =3.0, whilst bis (N,N',N"-tributyl)Na,K Na,Mg-2,2',2"-phenylmethylidintris(3-oxabutamide) and oNPOE functioned as a calcium sensor, displaying excellent selectivity over Mg. -log KPOT= 4.3.Ca,MgAdditionally a triamide based upon a cyclohexane triol skeleton was prepared, a membrane fabricated and its performance assessed as a sodium sensor
