CIFOR Infobrief 271. doi:10.17528/cifor/007588Key messages: Ecosystems provide people with services that enable adaptation to climate change, which we refer to here as ‘adaptation services’. But adaptation services do not flow automatically: some input from people is needed. We identified five types of mechanisms that support the production of adaptation services. These mechanisms are related to: (i) multifunctional and traditional ecosystem management, (ii) proactive management of transformed ecosystems, (iii) use of novel adaptation services, (iv) collective ecosystem management, and (v) appreciating, using and valuing adaptation services. Understanding these mechanisms can lead to an improved flow of adaptation services and more options for livelihoods and well-being under climate change. This InfoBrief summarizes the findings of a paper published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society Series B (Lavorel et al. 2020)

Vor einigen Jahren hat der Verfasser in der selben Zeitschrift den zusammenfassenden Charakter der Qualifikation des technischen Personals im zivilen Lufttransport unterstrichen. Ihre strukturierende Auswirkung auf die Ausbildung und die Beschäftigungspolitik wurde herausgestellt. Ein Modell vom geschlossenen Arbeitsmarkt konnte besonders innerhalb der grossen Fluggesellschaften beobachten werden, das die Entwicklung der niedrigeren Qualifikationenebenen weit bestimmte. Dos anwendbare Kausalitätsprinzip konnte alsdann die Qualifikation als der wesentliche Bestimmungsfaktor der Ausbildung und der Arbeitsplatzstruktur betrachten.
Der Konjunkturwandel im Lufttransport, wobei diese Tätigkeit kontinuierlich expandiert, und die technischen Entwicklungen führen zu einer — schon hervorgerufenen — Infragestellung dieses Modells. Die individuelle Qualifikation des Pilots und die gemeinsame Qualifikation der Besatzung haben sich unter dem Druck des Marktes und der neuen Technologien verändert. Das neue Erklärungsmodell ist fast der Gegensatz vom früheren und komplexer. Der Produktenmarkt fördert allerdings vielseitige Mangel, vor allem beim technischen Flugpersonal insbesondere bei den Piloten. Von nun an kann man davon ausgehen, dass der Arbeitsmarkt auf Grund des grösseren Wettbewerbs die Qualifikation und die Ausbildung zugleich bestimmt.Lucien Lavorel, New markets, new jobs ? A few years ago, in an article published in this journal, the author emphasized the globalizing nature of the skills of technical aircrews in civil aviation. Its structuring effect with regard to training and job management was revealed. A model, easily recognizable within large companies, gave an account of the closed labour market prevailing in the lower echelons of air transport companies. Thus, the causality scheme provided was able to consider skills as the main determining factors of training and employment.
The reversal of this situation in air transport, making it a strong, continuously growing sector, and technological changes that have taken place, encourage us to question the type of explanation given above. Individual skills of aircrew members, and the collective skills of the crew as a whole, have changed under the pressure of the market and new technologies. Tne new explanatory scheme is almost reversed, and more complex. The market for poducts generates multiple shortages, including a shortage of technical aircrew, and especially pilots. It is now possible to suggest that the job market, in an increasingly competitive context, determines both skills and training.Il y a quelques années, dans un article paru dans cette même revue, l'auteur insistait sur le caractère globalisant de la qualification des navigants techniques de l'aéronautique marchande. Son effet structurant en matière de formation et de gestion de l'emploi était mis en évidence. Un modèle, tout à fait repérable au sein des grandes compagnies, rendait compte du marché du travail fermé qui commandait largement les évolutions aux niveaux inférieurs du transport aérien. Aussi le schéma de causalité utilisable pouvait considérer la qualification comme le déterminant principal de la formation et de l'emploi.
Le renversement de conjoncture dans le transport aérien qui en fait une activité en expansion forte et continue, et les évolutions technologiques conduisent à une remise en cause — déjà suggérée — de ce type d'explication. La qualification individuelle du navigant et celle, collective de l'équipage, ont évolué sous la pression du marché et des technologies nouvelles. Le nouveau schéma explicatif se trouve quasiment inversé et plus complexe. En effet, le marché des produits génère de multiples pénuries dont celle de navigants techniques et particulièrement de pilotes. Désormais, on peut avancer que le marché du travail, dans un contexte de plus en plus concurrentiel, détermine à la fois la qualification et la formation.Lavorel Lucien. No full textLes Croix de bois est un roman à grand succès qui a suscité une grande polémique à sa publication en 1919. Son auteur Roland Dorgelès y peint avec beaucoup de réalisme la Première Guerre Mondiale et la vie de ses soldats. La vie au front avec ses luttes pour la victoire ou la survie s alternent avec de courts moments de répit lors du repos, loin des tranchées, où les soldats cohabitent avec les civils. Une véritable fresque du quotidien de personnes ordinaires déépassés par une situation extraordinaireTout est à redéfinir dans ce nouvel univers de guerre où les références habituelles n ont plus de place. C est le nouvel humanisme fait d amour et désamour de soi et des autres pour la renaissance de ce nouvel homme-soldat de 14. Tout le tragique de l histoire y est dénoncé sans détour mais d une manière singulière à la fois. Tel est le témoignage de Dorgelès dont l apport autobiographique non négligeable donne sa grande valeur à cette littérature d engagement. De la découverte d un homme parti au front à la découverte d un auteur et de son premier roman ; c est l art d écrire dorgelesien qui est donné à lire dans Les Croix de bois. Un art d écrire à la marge d une écriture de guerre classique qui ne peut se passer de clins d œil à Maupassant, Poe et Montélérant. Au style innovateur, il mêle le fantastique et le suspense à l ironie acerbe au rire dérangeant. Planetary stewardship in an urbanizing world: beyond city limits
No full textCities are rapidly increasing in importance as a major factor shaping the Earth system, and as such must take corresponding responsibility. With currently over half of the world population, cities are supported by resources originating from primarily rural regions that are often located around the world far distant from the urban loci of use. The multiple and complex environmental and social challenges the world faces require interconnected solutions and a coordinated governance approach to planetary stewardship. There is a new opportunity to conceptualize a key component of planetary stewardship as a global system of cities that develop sustainable processes and policies in concert with its non-urban areas. The potential for cities to cooperate as a system and with rural connectivity could not only increase their capacity to effect change and foster stewardship at the planetary scale but also increase their resource security
