Nineteenth century collections of Australian frogs in the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Science.
An examination of nineteenth century specimens of frog fauna collected in Australia and housed in the Russian Academy of Science in St. Petersburg provides valuable insight into nomenclature of the period and highlights the extent of herpetological collections. The article analyzes a stereotypical image of Russian scientist, published in a range of books of Russian Academy of Science. This image represents a construction of an ideal Russian scientist, who possesses the most desirable personal characteristics and reflects values of Russian scientific community. The article stresses, that popularization of such an image would contribute to rise of prestige of Russian science and profession of scientist
Printed Hebrew Bibles in the Russian Academy of Science Library
The Rare Book collection of the Russian Academy of Science Library (Biblioteka Akademii
Nauk, BAN) includes a number of editions in Hebrew language printed between 1500s and
1800s. The article focuses on the editions of Biblical text produced in Italy, Spain, France,
Germany, Holland and England during the era of European history when religious divisions
caused by Reformation encouraged Christians to seek legitimation of their confessional
choice by studying and reproducing Hebrew Scripture. The Hebrew text which the Christians
published became a polemical weapon employed by different groups against their opponents
and against the Jews as their common Other. Nevertheless, an interest in the original Biblical
text not only fostered the development of textual criticism and Biblical scholarship but also
stimulated the new scholarly inter-faith and interconfessional cooperaton. BAN collection
holds copies of Daniel Bomberg’s Mikraot Gedolot (1547) and Biur ha-Torah (1544), Robert
Estienne’s Bible (1539–1542), several polyglot Biblies (Polyglotta Complutensis, Antwerp
polyglot, London polyglot) and other multilingual editions with translations into Latin and
other European languages. Some of these books were part of prominent private collections,
such as king Sigismundus II Augustus’ library of Vilno, or the home library of bishop of Tver’
Theophylactus Lopatinsky. The article examines the history and influence of certain editions
and studies the BAN copies with respect to their provenance, their use by the readers and their
significance in the history of reading and education

Technical liaison with the Institute of Physical Chemistry (Russian Academy of Science)
The Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Science (IPC/RAS) is engaged by the DOE to conduct studies of the fundamental and applied chemistry of the transuranium elements (TRU; primarily neptunium, plutonium, and americium; Np, Pu, Am) and technetium {Tc} in alkaline media. This work is being supported by the DOE because the radioactive wastes stored in underground tanks at DOE sites (Hanford, Savannah River, and Oak Ridge) contain TRU and {Tc}, are alkaline, and the chemistries of TRU and {Tc} are not well developed in this system. Previous studies at the IPC/RAS centered on the fundamental chemistry and on coprecipitation. Work continuing in FY 1996 will focus more on the applied chemistry of the TRU and {Tc} in alkaline media and continue effort on the coprecipitation task
Measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B0 -> J/ψ KS0 decays
This Letter reports a measurement of the CP violation observables SJ/ψK0S and CJ/ψK0S in the decay channel B0→J/ψK0S performed with 1.0 fb−1 of pp collisions at s√=7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment. The fit to the data yields SJ/ψK0S=0.73±0.07(stat)±0.04(syst) and CJ/ψK0S=0.03±0.09(stat)±0.01(syst). Both values are consistent with the current world averages and within
expectations from the Standard Model
First observation of Bs → J/ψf0(980) decays
Using data collected with the LHCb detector in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, the hadronic decay is observed. This CP eigenstate mode could be used to measure mixing-induced CP violation in the system. Using a fit to the π+π− mass spectrum with interfering resonances gives . In the interval ±90 MeV around 980 MeV, corresponding to approximately two full f0 widths we also find , where in both cases the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively
Measurement of the D+/- production asymmetry in 7 TeV pp collisions
The asymmetry in the production cross-section \sigma of D+/- mesons, A_P = (\sigma(D+) - \sigma(D-))/(\sigma(D+) + \sigma(D-)), is measured in bins of pseudorapidity \eta and transverse momentum p_T within the acceptance of the LHCb detector. The result is obtained with a sample of D+ -> K_S pi+ decays corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^-1, collected in pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. When integrated over the kinematic range 2.0 K_S pi+ decay is negligible. No significant dependence on \eta or p_T is observed
How to Modernize the Academic Museum. Exhibition Activity of the Museum Group the ARAS as a Pilot Project of the Museum of History of Russian Academy of Science
The article on the example of the Museum group of Archives of Russian Academy of Science is demonstrating new possibilities of representation of archival documents in the museum space. The authors focused on the potential exposure of the museum based on the principle of visualization. They explain the special role of representing scientific knowledge for education of youth. They offer a new form of interactive communication with the museum’s scientific heritage, based on the method of comprehending the reality as a “co-experience” and “re-discovery” that leads to the attainment the new generation to the new intellectual and spiritual experience. The experiment, the research paper, the science, the war, and even the modern art are the main themes of our exhibitions. The authors use the special new methods of exhibition to create the intriguing image of scientist. They use light boxes and interactive demonstrations. The main aim of the exposition is to show the documents of Archives of Russian Academy of Science, so we rely on the following materials: personal fond of academicians A.N. Nesmeyanov, V.L. Komarov, M.V. Keldysh, I.V. Kurchatov and others. Authors successfully solve the problems of the development of new theoretical principles exposing archival documents by modern methods
UNIVERSITIES AND RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE: OPPORTUNITIES AND STALEMATES OF COOPERATION
Рассматриваются вопросы вузовско-академического сотрудничества как одного из факторов, определяющих качество подготовки специалистов. Не претендуя на исчерпывающий анализ всех сторон взаимодействия вуза с академическими институтами, авторы обозначают лишь некоторые проблемы, которые специфичны для физического факультета университета. На основе конкретного опыта анализируется эволюция такого взаимодействия в процессе перехода от старых к новым отношениям в обществе. Отмечается роль, которую играло и играет в настоящее время сотрудничество с институтами РАН в организации научно-образовательной деятельности. Учитывая общность проблем, с которыми сталкиваются вузы, авторы рассчитывают на продолжение дискуссии и обмен опытом с целью выработки оптимальной системы управления научно-образовательной деятельностью в партнерстве с академическими институтами.Problems of the higher school - Russian Academy of Science cooperation as one of the factors defining quality of training specialists are considered. Not applying for exhaustive analysis, authors designate only some problems which are specific to physics department of the university. On the basis of concrete experience the evolution of partnership with RAS during transition period from old to new attitudes in a society is analyzed. The role that it has played and plays now in organization of research and educational activity is marked. Considering a generality of problems that higher schools collide, authors believe in continuation of discussion and an exchange of experience with the purpose of development of an optimum control system of research and educational activity in partnership with the academic institutes
