Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Currently, there exist several models and standards for software processes improvement currently available, but, in general, Micro and Small software Companies (MSC) do not know or do not use th em, with the result that they face difficulties in producing software with quality and productivity as expected by the market. There can be perceived a lack of indications on how to the implement practices suggested by reference models and standards adapted to the reality of MSC. In addition, those practices have to be adapted to the specific characteristics of each organization and aligned with their business goals through process modeling. In this context, this work presents an extension of the ASPE/MSC processes modeling approach, through the introduction of a process reference guide as a basis for the improvement of a descriptive process model in alignment with well-known reference models and adapted to typical MSC characteristics and limitations. In this context, a guide for the process project monitoring and control is created and, using the ASPE/MSC extension, applied in two software organizations. In these two applications were collected various experiences. The evaluation of these two applications provide first indicators that the use of a reference guide for process modeling may help the efficiency, reducing the effort and time required. We also observe that the support of a reference guide may help the engineer during the modeling process

Bulk and clay mineral composition indicate origin of terra rossa soils in Western Herzegovina

The B horizons of terra rossa soils developed on three different carbonate lithologies having variable insoluble residue contents were studied in Western Herzegovina. Comparison of their composition and properties illustrates to what extent mineral (especially clay mineral assemblage) and particle size composition of those horizons and the insoluble residue of the underlying carbonate rocks can be used as indicators of the polygenetic nature of terra rossa in this region. Terra rossa B horizons have characteristic red colours, neutral to slightly acid pH, high base saturation with calcium as the predominant cation and high CIA (Chemical Index of Alteration). The CIA values obtained are generally in accordance with mineral composition and particle size distribution of the analysed B horizons. The predominant clay mineral phases in B horizons and related insoluble residues match. Kaolinite is the predominant clay mineral phase in the B horizons overlying carbonate rocks containing low amounts of insoluble residue, while smectite predominates in calcarenites areas with a high insoluble residue content. However, the presence of plagioclase, gibbsite, chlorite-vermiculite mixed layer mineral and vermiculite in B horizons overlying carbonate rocks containing low amounts of insoluble residue support a polygenetic origin for the terra rossa. In contrast, terra rossa formed on calcarenites containing high amounts of insoluble residue might have formed almost exclusively from the parent carbonate rock although some influence of external materials (e.g. gibbsite) cannot be excluded. This investigation shows that in Western Herzegovina, an area with no important aeolian input, the content and mineral composition of carbonate rock insoluble residue plays a major role in terra rossa composition. We can tentatively conclude that the lower the insoluble residue content of the parent materials, the greater is the expectation of a more polygenetic origin for the terra rossa

Pragmatic Case Studies as a Source of Unity in Applied Psychology

To unify or not to unify applied psychology: that is the question. In this article we review pendulum swings in the historical efforts to answer this question—from a comprehensive, positivist, “top-down,” deductive yes between the 1930s and the early 60s, to a postmodern no since then. A rationale and proposal for a limited, “bottom-up,” inductive yes in applied psychology is then presented, employing a case-based paradigm that integrates both positivist and postmodern themes and components. This paradigm is labeled “pragmatic psychology” and, its specific use of case studies, the “Pragmatic Case Study Method” (“PCS Method”). We call for the creation of peer-reviewed journal-databases of pragmatic case studies as a foundational source of unifying applied knowledge in our discipline. As one example, the potential of the PCS Method for unifying different angles of theoretical regard is illustrated in an area of applied psychology, psychotherapy, via the case of Mrs. B. The article then turns to the broader historical and epistemological arguments for the unifying nature of the PCS Method in both applied and basic psychology.Peer reviewe

FRA PRONTO INTERVENTO E ACCOGLIENZA. Spazi rinnovati per la Croce Rossa Italiana di Vicenza

In Vicenza, overlooking the Bacchiglione River, the building that houses the Italian Red Cross's headquarters dates back to the early decades of the twentieth century. It retains the main façades from that period but has undergone extensions, refurbishments, and structural restorations over time. The submitted projects envisage their redevelopment and renovation to meet the renewed needs of the Italian Red Cross in its daily work of assisting people, promoting social inclusion, and responding promptly to emergencies. To this end, the building required more suitable spaces for the volunteers who work there and for welcoming external visitors, with specific functional areas such as accommodation for volunteers, a canteen, infirmary, multipurpose rooms and training halls, offices, storage spaces, emergency accommodation, as well as facilities for ambulances and emergency vehicles, and a redesign of the outdoor areas facing the riverbank. With these goals in mind, the spaces have been organised according to principles of flexibility and adaptability. While respecting the existing volume, original decorative elements, and the load-bearing structures of the buildings, the projects offer a new interpretation of the existing structure, integrating it with the surrounding green areas and creating outdoor spaces to serve both volunteers and the broader community affiliated with the Italian Red Cross. In line with the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda (specifically SDG3 – Good Health & Well-being; SDG5 – Gender Equality; SDG8 – Decent Work & Economic Growth), the projects aim to foster socially inclusive relationships and provide opportunities for training, leisure, and creative work. This event is consistent with the objectives of the New European Bauhaus

PINDAR, NEMEAN 3.36: ΕΓΚΟΝΗΤΙ AND GREEK LEXICA

This paper argues that: (a) the transmitted text of Pind. Nem. 3.35–6 ποντίαν Θέτιν κατέμαρψεν | ἐγκονητί (‘[Peleus] caught the sea-nymph Thetis quickly’) is not the original text of Pindar; (b) ἐγκονητί does not fit the context, is not an attested Greek word and should be eliminated from dictionaries of ancient Greek; (c) Byzantine etymological works, followed by many modern scholars, base their explanations on the late antique form ἀκονητί, which should be eliminated from classical, Hellenistic and imperial texts; (d) the tradition of the Etymologicum Magnum knows the variant ἐγκονιτί (conjectured for Pindar by Bergk) ‘with dust’ (‘with effort’), which seems presupposed by the scholia on Pindar; (e) the form ἐγκονιτί (created on the pattern of ἀκονιτί) is to be preferred in Pindar for reasons of language and content and should be added to the dictionaries of ancient Greek
