The topic of this artistic research project is the musical performance method where a solo singer conducts an orchestra while singing. The aim is to shine a light on the effect this performance practice has on the quality of the performance; if it hampers the singer’s ability to interpret the lyrics and make theatrical gestures or if the musical performance can possibly benefit from having one person singing and conducting. The core of the project is a concert in Reykjavík organised by this author where she performed as solo soprano and conductor with a chamber orchestra. The research was made from her personal perspective, while the views of instrumentalists also played a significant role. The author observed the internationally renowned soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan as she rehearsed and performed a concert with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra (ISO) at the Reykjavík Arts Festival. For this project the writer enjoyed the cooperation of three composers whom she commissioned to write pieces especially for her to sing and conduct, and together with Zerbinetta's grand aria by Richard Strauss this music was premiered by her and a chamber orchestra at her concert in Eldborg, Harpa at the Reykjavík Opera Days on November 5th, 2022.Soprano takes the baton! In Eldborg, Harpa on November 5th, 2022 at the Reykjavík Opera Days festival finale.Ragnheiður Ingunn Jóhannsdóttir, soprano and conductor.Program:Jóhann G. Students in Early Childhood Teacher Education and Their First Experience with Problem-Based Learning : A Comparative Study From the Perspective of Students in Kyrgyzstan and Norway

    Get PDF
This comparative study examines how students from Early Childhood Teacher Education in Kyrgyzstan and Norway value their first experience with Problem-Based Learning. The study is a result of the collaboration between ECTE in Kyrgyzstan and Norway focusing on student-active learning. The research is important because there are few if any studies focusing on PBL in Early Childhood Teacher Education (ECTE), and little use of PBL as a basic norm in Kyrgyzstan. Our data consists of students’ anonymous, written, open-ended questionnaires. These are analysed by means of qualitative content analysis. We found evidence that students value collaboration, and in this report, we describe their experiences with the PBL-method and suggest some implications for the quality of learning. We discuss and compare similarities and differences in students’ experiences in light of cultural differences

The myth of the vampire can be found throughout history. When the literary vampire came forth its popularity kept growing steadily. This essay will be discussing the author Anne Rice and her Vampire Chronicles and how her writing helped change and forge a new tradition in vampire fiction. The specifics of Rice’s vampires characters will be discussed, the changes she produced, and the explicit traits of the vampires in Rice’s fiction such as their connection to the Byronic hero and to the sexuality of the vampire. To bring out the these traits this essay will analyze the first three books in The Vampire Chronicles to show how Rice manages to grab the reader through not only her story-telling talent, but Rice’s intellectual, melancholic, erotic and alluring characters that are somewhat perverse but in an oddly charming and seductive way

Master's thesis in Offshore technology: Industrial asset managementOver the last few years we have witnessed one of the largest drops in oil prices. The industry has become highly competitive and customer oriented, and the offshore companies are facing increasing demands for efficiency; more streamlined and standardized work processes and work methods. The ongoing battle for the current contracts has resulted in an extreme pressure to keep costs down, while still delivering sufficient quality, and therefore makes a number of companies within the oil and gas industry suffer financially. In order to survive in this industry, one should strive for continuously improving the variables that can affect the business at all levels. This also includes a higher degree of supportive and inspiring management, a sense of personal empowerment and ownership by each individual. This thesis attempts to use Lean as an approach to deal with the challenges the employees at DeepOcean Offshore Base are facing in their daily work. Lean is an approach used to maximize customer value and minimize waste by focusing on flow, streamlined processes, visual management and continuous improvements. By waste means unnecessary use of resources and activities that are not making any value. A study of the Lean concept has been carried out by the author of this thesis in order to form a knowledge base and further insight. In addition, case studies of companies that have implemented Lean to varying degrees have been studied. A qualitative mapping of work processes, interviews, observation and questionnaires have been applied in obtaining relevant information. This thesis encompasses identified challenges and improvement potentials. The results of the study revealed that the employees at DeepOcean Offshore Base are in a situation where they just spend time on ‘keeping the business running’, due to an arguable amount of inefficient work processes stealing valuable time. There are however many contributing factors that together represent a huge amount of waste at the DeepOcean Offshore Base. Changes are suggested within relevant variables that may affect the business, as well as specific Lean initiatives that can support the necessary changes, and more explicitly enhance flow efficiency. Lean can be used as an approach in dealing with present challenges at DeepOcean Offshore Base by starting to continuously strive to make things a little better, and constantly maintaining the improvements. Through implementation and sustainment of specific Lean initiatives, waste can be reduced and value may flow without interruptions

    The Language of Jewellery

"In the 5th–7th centuries AD, members of the female population in Scandinavia frequently wore a costume adorned with conspicuous items of jewellery. Many of the items, such as brooches and clasps, were dress-accessories used to fasten these garments. Some of them, moreover, were popular over an extended area of Europe, and have been found in Scandinavia, Anglo-Saxon England and on the Continent alike. This book provides an analysis of more than 1,800 such items of jewellery from Scandinavia. It explores the contextual and geographical distribution through time of four major types of dress-accessory: cruciform brooches, relief brooches, wrist-clasps and conical brooches. Detailed analysis reveals distribution patterns and variations that provide new insights into the multifaceted reality of the Scandinavian pre-Viking period. The author argues that in a time characterized by social stress and upheaval, women played an important role in the negotiation of identities through the use of costume adorned with dress-accessories. These negotiations were part of a continuous, complex and ever-changing discourse of identity, in which different dimensions of multiple identities were generated, articulated and transformed. In some instances, a common identity is manifest even at a date which precedes by several centuries the unification of much the same areas into single medieval kingdoms, while social and political conditions could equally trigger either the material expression or the disappearance of shared identities at local, regional, and even pan-European levels. This book also offers a more nuanced view of ethnic groupings during the 5th–7th centuries by examining the inter-connectedness of the flexible and mobile ‘warrior nations’ of the Migration Period, and the territorially rooted, often historically documented ‘peoples’, who are reflected in the practices of female dress.

Exploring metacognitive beliefs and attentional control as statistical predictors of social anxiety, depression symptoms and work status among high socially anxious individuals

Background: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is associated with substantial individual suffering, lower quality of life and considerable economic cost for society. It is also considered a major risk factor for developing depression and is associated with poor occupational functioning. Prominent cognitive models focus on the content of thoughts and social fears as mechanisms underlying social anxiety and its related problems. However, the metacognitive model emphasizes metacognitive beliefs and individual differences in attentional control as important transdiagnostic factors underlying emotional disorders and related problems in general, and could therefore potentially provide new knowledge about which factors underlie social anxiety and its related problems. However, research on the metacognitive model for social anxiety is scarce, and no studies have, to the author´s knowledge, investigated the relative contribution of attentional control and metacognitive beliefs in this context. Aims: The current study therefore aimed to investigate the relative contribution of attentional control and metacognitive beliefs in explaining severity of social anxiety and depression symptoms, and as potential determinants of work status in an analogue SAD-sample. Method: In a cross-sectional design, 346 high socially anxious individuals participated in an online survey about psychological factors in social anxiety and related problems. Results: Attentional control- and metacognitive belief domains were unique predictors of social anxiety, symptoms of depression and work status even when controlling for social fears. Conclusions: These findings suggest that metacognitive beliefs and attentional control are important underlying factors of social anxiety, depression symptoms, and work status in individuals with social anxiety. These findings are in line with the metacognitive model and suggest that targeting poor attentional control and maladaptive metacognitive beliefs has the potential to reduce social anxiety and depression symptoms, and to facilitate return to work among those with social anxiety

Lean management is a methodology that has raised awareness in manufacturing and service companies last couple of years.
