The categorization of meanings against lexical items that have multiple meanings or that undergo an expansion of meaning often poses problems to language users. This is because language users are often confused and unsure of the true meaning of a lexical item based on the context of its use. Studies on lexical semantics have been extensively conducted but most of the studies conducted focus on the meaning of adjectives, idioms and verbs only. Studies linking word meaning to sexual crime using newspaper data are still considered new and still lacking in number. This study, which uses Prototype Theory, will utilize digital newspaper data, namely Harian Metro, which is expected to fill the existing gaps. This prototype theory is proven to help unravel the cognitive processes involved as the reader tries to understand the true meaning of the word meaning that describes this obscene sexual crime. This study also proves that the use of cognitive semantics by utilizing prototype theory as well as the concept of lexical mapping has helped the process of utterance comprehension take place. All these cognitive processes are used in helping the reader understand the true meaning of a word. This study proves that the lexical used to describe the obscene crime is easily understood by the reader but there are other features that can be used by the author to describe the obscene sexual crime. This aims to further facilitate the reader's understanding of obscene sexual crimes. Overall, the results of this study found that the lexical used is appropriate to the concept of the crime of obscenit

Metaphor of AMOK in Traditional Malay Text Corpora: An Analysis Using the Hybrid Theory

    No full text
AbstractThis paper aims to examine the metaphors of amok in the corpora of traditional Malay texts. The study utilizes the corpus data from the Malay Concordance Project (MCP). The selected works are Sejarah Melayu (Sulalat Al-Salatin), Hikayat Hang Tuah and Tuhfat Al-Nafis. Within this study, the metaphoric element of AMOK was analyzed using the Hybrid Theory by Tendahl (2009)which was later revised by Stöver (2010). The theory that hybridizes the pragmatic and cognitive linguistics approaches is supported by the Triple Processing model to produce a conceptual region that describes a lexical concept or meaning for words or phrases which are figurative or implicit in nature

Analisis Metafora Konseptual dalam Sitkom Komedi Melayu

Comedy sitcoms incorporate humour that elicits amusement among audiences through spoken language and physical gestures. However, the humour often leads to misinterpretations, making it difficult for the audience to grasp the underlying meaning of the performance. This is because humour typically contains implied meanings and metaphors. From a cognitive linguistic perspective, conceptual metaphors serve to express abstract ideas or to elucidate complex concepts. Nevertheless, the abstract nature and complexity of such concepts often result in misinterpretation. This study analyses the conceptual metaphors used in the Malay comedy sitcom Sepahtu Reunion Live 2022 by applying the hybrid theory. Employing a qualitative content analysis approach, data were obtained via the online streaming platform Sooka TV (https://www.sookatv.com/), comprising nine episodes of Sepahtu Reunion Live 2022 aired between June 2022 and October 2022. Findings reveal that conceptual metaphors used by the performers (comedians) serve to conceptualise abstract and implicit entities in order to explain complex ideas. These include concepts of EMOTION, LOVE, AFFECTION, LIFE, DEATH, HUMAN TRAITS AND BEHAVIOURS, and MORAL VALUES. Although presented in humorous form, these complex concepts reveal the power of humour not merely as comic relief but as a medium capable of altering attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs. Ultimately, such humour has the potential to elicit meaningful and positive psychological responses. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Speech Acts in Trials of Underage Sexual Criminal Case

Language usage in a court trial of a criminal case is usually associated with utterances that lead to justification of the imposed punishment for the offender. Utterances of justification are usually categorized as a performative speech act. Each utterance can be categorized into five types of speech, namely representatives, directives, commissive, expressive, and declaratives. This descriptive study uses the text analysis technique, by analysing the utterance delivered in the court trial. The findings showed that mostly the Deputy Public Prosecutor and the advocates are using the directive speech act whereas the OKT and the witnesses are using representative speech acts. Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
