How Dio wrote history: Dio Cassius’ intellectual, historical, and literary techniques

    No full text
This dissertation explores the process of history-writing by Dio Cassius through comparative literary historiographic analysis. By examining Dio’s Roman History as an integral historiographic endeavor, the dissertation attempts to reconstruct Dio’s overarching methodology. This task is achieved through the analysis of Dio’s own editorial asides and the comparison of Dio with parallel historical accounts, as well as by means of observing consistent features in Dio’s compositional design. The dissertation addresses such aspects of Dio’s methodology as his critical approach to sources, his principles involved in selection, reworking, and presentation of the historical material, his treatment of variant versions, and his use of literary allusions. A more in-depth discussion is devoted both to the role which dreams, portents, and prodigies, as well as wisdom expressions play in the system of causation developed by Dio, and to the historiography of Dio’s speeches. The dissertation revisits the traditional preconceptions regarding Dio’s extensive reliance on Thucydides, and in particular subjects to a systematic critique the hypothesis that Dio shared a Thucydidean pessimistic view of human nature, perceived as a constant. The dissertation analyzes the multi-step procedure of Dio’s causation and his emphasis on retrospective logical analysis of the motivations of influential individuals which determine the outcomes of the historical events. A systematic treatment of the typology, function, and patterns of presentation of speeches in Dio is undertaken in the concluding part of the study. This discussion revisits the traditional dichotomy in interpretation of Dio’s speeches (whether they are just rhetorical set-pieces akin to the progymnasmata of the rhetorical schools or they truly represent the author’s own views) and points toward new interpretative directions which take into consideration other types of intellectual discourse of the period, including those formed by the system of formal rhetorical education. The dissertation draws a portrait of the historical work of Dio Cassius as a mirror of the intellectual and cultural preoccupations of his own time. It treats the Roman History of Dio Cassius as belonging simultaneously to many intellectual orbits: in cultural sense, to both the Greek and the Roman worlds; in generic, linguistic, and literary sense — both to the traditions of classical Attic historiography and to new intellectual trends brought forth by the spirit of the Second Sophistic.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Andriy Fomi

Need to get somewhere fast: A critical examination of the transition from post-secondary education to work

    No full text
Need to Get Somewhere Fast critically explores the transition from post-secondary education to work - it seeks to complexify the dominant view of the transition from post-secondary education to work as a linear, distinct event that can be assessed through primarily financial indicators. Complexifying our understanding of transition, as critical scholars/educators and critical practitioners, allows us to move beyond deficit-focused interventions and offers a more comprehensive understanding of how factors beyond the individual student constitute and constrain the transition experience. With a more complex understanding of transition, post-secondary educators, students, employers, and researchers can consider the pressures on students to “get somewhere fast” and support transition processes that involve complex and interrelated factors. Need to Get Somewhere Fast is grounded in the narratives of social service workers. Social service workers, practitioners who work with marginalized people in community-based, not-for-profit agencies, are a liminal group who face significant challenges, including tenuous work, vicarious trauma, and precarity. Their narratives of navigating the neoliberal institutions of school and work highlight power relations, idealized expectations, and the experience of transition as an ongoing process. Their narratives illustrate the importance of resistance, criticality, and exploring alternate discourses of what it means to successfully transition into a professional role. Need to Get Somewhere Fast puts more-than-human, relational, and performative ontologies to work to see what is possible, from a practical, ethical perspective, for educators and educational institutions. -- From publisher website

Ideal Cynic in Orations of Dio Chrysostom

    No full text
The paper deals with Dio's portrayal of Diogenes as a Cynic who challenges the conventional meaning of the good life. The author wonders whether Dio of Prusa mechanically takes over Diogenes' attitudes or adapts them to the social and political reality of his time. The first part of the paper describes the circumstances that led Dio to become a Cynic. The second part of the paper deals with the possible differences between early Diogenic and later Dionian forms of Cynicism. The third part of the paper analyses various ancient versions of the story of Diogenes' meeting with Alexander, which could lead us to a better understanding of Dio's version. The purpose of the article is to clarify the nature of Dionian Cynicism

Communication within the scientific process by Croatian journals

The scientific communication of Croatian cultural community with the worldwide one is studied in Croatian journals from the second half of the 19th century. Twelve titles among those which appeared in that period were analysed if they were published in Croatian irrespective of their geographic or political locality: Gospodarski list (1842- ), Kolo (1842-53), Zora Dalmatinska (1844-49), Pravdonoša (1851-52), Arkiv za pověstnicu jugoslavensku (1851-75), Pravnik (1853-54), Napredak (1859- ), Književnik (1864-66), Rad Jugoslavenske akademije znanosti i umjetnosti (1867-8), Šumarski list (1877- ), Liečnički viestnik (1877- ), Glasnik hrvatskoga naravoslovnoga družtva (1886-1907). The appearance of references to works of the forerunners was chosen as the indicator among a dozen possible ones from the pertinent literature. The following questions were sought to be answered: when, and how (including the location within the papers) were the references expressed, (2) is there a full bibliographic information about the source, and (3) is the foreign literature referred to. The historical framework is established together with the gradual introduction of the references in Croatian journals, from the first case - List měsečni horvatsko-slavonskoga Gospodarskoga Družtva from 1842, through an editorial stabilization - Arkiv za pověstnicu jugoslavensku from 1865, to the almost contemporary referencing style - Glasnik hrvatskoga naravoslovnoga družtva from 1886. The referencing initiator was Ivan Kukuljević Sakcinski, as the editor of and the author of many a paper in the journal Arkiv za pověstnicu jugoslavensku. The Croatian (scientific) journals came into being with a lag from the European ones by two centuries, but they caught up rather quickly

The paper is about the theme of God’s judgement from the messianic point of view of Jewish German philosopher Hermann Cohen. First of all, the author explains that Cohen’s messianic prophetism cannot be reduced to the interpretation that thinkers like Karl Löwith and Jürgen Moltmann give to Christian eschatology. Cohen goes beyond the mythical and eschatological thought which defines Universal Judgement as the Last Judgement. According to Cohen, rather, God’s judgement occurs every day allowing the redemption of mankind in the world and in time. In monotheism, polytheistic fate and doom are replaced by judgement and redemption, and God’s judgement is based on the attributes of justice and love. God who judges is not God who absolves or condemns according to the principle of retribution but God of remission, redemption and reconciliation

ABSTRAKSI Dio Fahri Afriatama 2020, NIT : 52155595 N, “ Upaya pencegahan proses pemuatan batu bara yang terbuang Di Kapal MV. Energy Midas”, Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran Semarang. Pembimbing I: Capt. Ali Imran Ritonga, MM, M.Mar, Pembimbing II: Ria Hermina Sari, S.S.,M.Sc. ABSTRACTION Dio Fahri Afriatama, 2020 , NIT : 52155595 N “Optimizing the Loading Process to Prevent the Wasted Load on MV. Energy Midas”, Merchant Marine Polytecnic Semarang. Preceptors I: Capt . Ali Imran Ritonga, MM, M.Mar, Preceptors II: Ria Hermina Sari, S.S.,M.Sc. To achieve the optimal implementation of coal loading using floating cranes. So in writing this thesis, the author describes the theory about the implementation of the loading process in the MV. Energy Midas. Coal cargo has a special character in its loading, so that in loading coal must pay attention to the danger possessed by the load when loading activities are carried out by floating cranes. The method used by the author is a qualitative descriptive method, while the data collection method used is the interview method, observation and literature related to cargo handling, especially during the loading process. From the results of the research conducted by the author during the practice on the MV. Energy Midas regarding the implementation of loading coal using floating cranes found obstacles in carrying out coal loading on the MV. Energy Midas, namely during loading, is a less skilled crane operator, not optimal grab conditions, poor communication between ships and crane operators, and unfavorable weather. In this case it can be concluded that the lack of preparation before carrying out the loading and lack of supervision of the personnel on board at the time of loading resulted in the implementation of coal loading not being optimal, the author's suggestion was that each crew would increase supervision of the work of the floating crane during the loading process

Art Made by Artificial Intelligence: The Effect of Authorship on Aesthetic Judgments

    No full text
Human-robot interaction requires that competent robot partners have a multiplicity of human characteristics. Can we accept that these competencies extend to the artistic domain, where humans have always expressed their uniqueness as a species? This study investigated whether aesthetic judgments evoked by abstract artworks vary depending on whether the author was believed to be a human or a robot. Adult participants were asked to give beauty (BJ) and liking (LJ) judgments, where BJ reflected artistic competence and LJ a more idiosyncratic, affective facet associated with the stimuli. Aesthetic judgments were made in a blind-baseline condition, devoid of authorship information, and a primed condition, where authorship information (human or robot) was provided. A significant variation was found in LJ and BJ between the blind and primed conditions. The human-authored paintings received a higher liking rating in the primed than the blind and robot conditions; opposite, the robot-authored paintings received a lower beauty rating in the primed than the blind condition. These results suggest a resistance to accepting artificial intelligence in the production of art and highlight the emotional component associated with human art-making. Furthermore, aesthetic judgments were correlated with the attribution of mental states to a human and a robot to evaluate what mental characteristics are most related to aesthetic judgments. Both BJ and LJ of robot-authored art were significantly associated with the mental ability of creativity, thus pinpointing this skill as a marker of human art-making

    Fixing Australia’s incredible defence policy

    No full text
Australia’s new government must make tough decisions in defence policy. Australia’s broad national interests and the challenging strategic environment in Indo-Pacific Asia make it essential to modernise the Australian Defence Force. The nation’s defence capabilities remain underfunded and its strategic edge in the region is eroding. The gap between the nation’s interests and capabilities is widening, and it is getting harder to meet the demands of the US alliance. Australia’s new government needs to restore focus and funding to defence.Key findings: The Australian government will need a first-principles review to identify the military strategy and force structure required to protect and advance the nation’s interests. The Australian government must increase defence funding in order to modernise the Australian Defence Force\u27s capabilities. Otherwise it will need to make drastic cuts to planned defence capability. The government must also think deeply about the role of the US alliance in Australia\u27s security, and take the initiative in shaping that alliance in Australia’s interests
