The main goal of this thesis is to learn more about how Rhian Samuel plays and interprets piano music, especially how to play expressively and show her ideas. This thesis is a comparative study of how Rhian Samuel's intentions and thoughts are illustrated in the composition The Therapy of Moonlight, No. 1 from A Garland for Anne and how those devices are illustrated in the movement and executed in performance. This thesis will examine the ideas of tradition and personality in Rhian Samuel's performances based on the piano and the pedagogical principles in Rhian's writings and compositions. It will do this by doing a detailed analysis of the scores. Through this thesis, pianists can use different means of interpretation to interpret the differences between these styles. Music contains solemn emotional expressions that can represent the typical style of 21stcentury classical music. Few pianists and teachers knew about Rhian Samuel's playing background, but it is sometimes clear why they thought this. Because of a lack of documentation about Samuel, these pianists have never heard of Rhian Samuel. To illustrate parallels and contrasts in pianistic performance, I will analyse how to play Rhian Samuel's composition in terms of pace and dynamics

Attention in incorporating inorganic nanostructures into organic optoelectronic devices has been growing in the past few years. These so-called hybrid organicinorganic nanocomposites systems are being studied more closely due to its possibility in combining the advantageous characteristics of inorganic and organic components. Within a single composite, the properties can easily be changed or tuned by varying the size of nanoparticle, material composition, and concentration in the composites to match the device requirement. The most important thing, they can maintain the fabrication advantages of organic device such as easy processing, low production and material cost, and manufacturing the devices on large and flexible substrates. These are important in device application and commercialization. Therefore, research on improving the performance of organic solar cells by incorporating inorganic nanostructures in the organic materials has become important topic of research. The nanocomposited photoactive layer thin film which is MEH-PPV:MWCNT were prepared and characterized. The parameters that involved in the optimization are different composition of MWCNT in tetrahydrofiiran (THF) and toluene, different composition of Iodine doped Multiwalled Carbon nanotubes (I-MWCNT) with low and high concentration of I-MWCNT. The characterizations involved are currentvoltage (I-V), absorbance, transmittance and photoluminescence measurements and physical properties measurements which involved Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). It was found that annealed MWCNT gave the best results in physical, electrical and optical properties. Meanwhile, comparing THF and toluene, THF convey the best results in all characterizations. The composition of I-MWCNT that was chosen to be used in organic solar cells was 60 wt% of I-MWCNT. In this work, bulk-heterojunction solar cells based on poly (2-methoxy-5-(2’-ethyl-hexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene) (MEHPPV) and a highly conductive multiwalled carbon nanotubes (I-MWCNT) were fabricated and characterized by white light I-V and external quantum efficiency measurements. The influences of different temperature treatment of the nanocomposite layer, the various concentrations of Iodine and different metal contact used as cathode on the solar cell device performance were studied. It was found that the optimized temperature occurred at 75 °C with optimized Iodine concentration of lg. The best metal contact with high efficiency was given when Platinum (Pt) was used. The achieved highest short circuit current density and energy conversion efficiency is 0.052mA/cm2 and 0.001%. Lastly, a new structure used Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) as n-type layer in organic solar cells was prepared. This layer act as hole blocking layer that prevents a direct contact between MEH-PPV:I-MWCNT and Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) substrates. The nanocomposited MEH-PPV:I-MWCNT with 60 wt% of I-MWCNT was prepared on ITO using Gold (Au) as the anode. It was found that interfacial area between MEH-PPV and TiO₂ has slight improved. Therefore, there is tendency to adapt device efficiency, short-circuit current (Jsc), open-circuit voltage (Voc) and the fill factor (FF). The initial values for both short circuit current density and power conversion efficiency are 0.115006 mA/cm2 and 0.414 x 10⁻³ % respectively

Intelligent traffic congestion system design / Muhammad Arif Isham, Puteri Sarah Mohamad Saad and Yusnira Husaini

Road congestion has been an issue in big cities, especially during peak hours. Traffic congestion occurs when overflowing cars on the roads and lanes resulting in slower speeds, longer travel times and increased delays for drivers. A few key factors leading to traffic congestion, specifically in Kuala Lumpur, are inefficient traffic control, vehicle accidents, insufficient parking space, and road work. A non-effective traffic light system will create worse traffic congestion during peak hours in the city (Abdelfatah et al., 2015). Hence, a newly designed solution is developed to solve those problems. In this project, the focus is on user-centric traffic management by improving inefficient control of traffic. The aim is to improve the traffic light system in the city so that users can have a pleasant traffic experience. The theory is to install sensors near the lane to provide inputs to the smart traffic light. Artificial intelligence (AI) vehicle detection in traffic lights decides a reasonable duration of green light for congested lanes. Another innovative feature in the system is the Kuala Lumpur Intelligent Congestion (KLIC) System application that integrates traffic monitoring and short messages notification system. All these three features, KLIC apps, camera live feed video, and notification system, have been developed as proof of concept. The current traffic light system can drastically improve the city's road congestion because users can start planning their journey before leaving their home after viewing live feed video of the traffic

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The optimized morphology of electrospun magnesium oxide (MgO) nanofibers (NFs) can be achieved according to the parameters set during the fabrication process. However, not all materials can be synthesized together as it depends on the application needs. This research aims to study the factors that influence the morphology of the MgO NFs due to material preparations and electro spinning parameters. The research is based on data obtained from previous research papers that were analysed using MATLAB R2019a software to evaluate the effect on MgO nanofibers synthesized with different materials. The study was focused on textural properties of nanofibers such as pore-volume and fiber diameter. Based on the analysis obtained, researchers need to consider using polymer material during the electro spinning fabrication. Each type of the polymer used will produce different values of the MgO NFs diameter after calcination process. Poly-propylene glycol polymer showed a very significant difference in the fiber diameter size in the range of 60 to 76 nm as compared to polylactic acid produced big size of fiber diameter in between 3300 to 6900 nm. The analysis showed that the use of nitrogen as a carrier gas in the fabrication of electrospun MgO NFs may produce a good quality of the nanofibers

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
