    No full text
Leadership and motivation are key factors in achieving success. Leaders are the pillars that command a team in pursuit of a goal and their decisions in terms of strategy, but also their qualities in terms of motivation make them a competitive advantage for their organizations. There are several studies on leadership and motivation, but its application in a specific context, which in this case are the employees of the sales department of the companies, has not been studied. To discount these essential workers for the good functioning of the company, is to give an advantage to the competitors. According to the perception of the salesforce of two companies, one Portuguese and one Polish, the present study intends to determine which are the characteristics leaders should have, what leadership style to follow, the various types of motivation that exist, what are their factors, and finally the link between leadership and motivation. Through the study, it is possible to conclude that the most important traits that a leader should have are to: define clear goals; encourage cooperation; have self-confidence and have a vision. It is also possible to conclude that the leader should follow the visionary leadership style, given that it is the most effective style according to the respondents. Moreover, the worker´s motivation is influenced by extrinsic factors such as a good relationship with co-workers and good working conditions, or by intrinsic factors such as progression in the career and having the skills to do the job.

    No full text
For more than 20 years, researchers have been investigating the phenomenon of born global organizations. Previous studies indicated knowledge as a key factor influencing rapid internationalization. However, the analysis of dominant knowledge management (KM) strategy of those entities is still missing. The investigation of its character is necessary as it determines the shape of KM processes inside companies. In this article, the author presented the results of a two-year qualitative research conducted in born global organizations on the case of Polish game developers. The project is interdisciplinary in nature combining two research fields: knowledge management and entrepreneurship

Despite wide interest in born global organizations, their knowledge management activities have not been investigated in detail by neither Polish nor international researchers. The study used a qualitative method, based on the interpretation techniques, relevant for the grounded theory. This approach was dictated by the weak structure of the research problem, which required exploratory methods, and a look from the perspective of practitioners, because from the point of view of the theory it was not possible to formulate answers to the posed problem. Research techniques, presented in the article, were designed in accordance with the guidelines of conducting qualitative research. Additionally, the research results were presented, which allowed to discover key factors of knowledge management in born global organizations

Rosnąca konkurencja w tej dziedzinie skłania wiele firm do wdrażania strategii wykorzystującej zaangażowanie użytkowników w rozwój produktów w celu dostarczania produktów lepiej dostosowanych do potrzeb klientów. Purpose : The purpose of this study is to contribute to managers’ understanding of the internationalization of born global (BG) firms from developed countries in emerging markets. Adapting the new institutional sociology approach, the authors provide insights into how BGs might strive to bridge the institutional distance. Design/methodology/approach : An explorative, multiple case study is used focusing on two Swiss BG firms in Brazil. Findings : The study shows that these two firms faced similar institutional challenges. However, they approached them in different ways and achieved different outcomes. The comparison of these two cases highlights key factors that may influence successful internationalization, namely, niche strategies, high commitment modes of entry and the liability of outsidership. Research limitations/implications : The main research implication is that the market mode of entry and high commitment entry modes are conductive to local market knowledge acquisition. Future research should investigate how western BGs might overcome the disadvantages of foreignness and effectively gain acceptance in emerging markets such as in Brazil, China or India. This could be done by looking at micro-processes, e.g. multiple identities in which BGs might strive to simultaneously fit in and stand out in the host market. Practical implications : The findings, which uncover key factors that influence internationalization, shall contribute to managers’ understanding of how BG firms from developed economies enter emerging markets and overcome challenges. Originality/value : Comparing these two cases highlights key factors that may shed light on the successful internationalization of BGs from developed countries in emerging markets. The authors first describe the institutional isomorphic pressures on the two Swiss BGs in Brazil. Second, the authors reveal how they engaged in isomorphic processes to bridge the institutional distance

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
