Effect of Teaching Complex Noun Phrases for Reading Comprehension Purposes in EAP Programs

    Get PDF
Complex noun phrases (CNPs), defined as phrases where a noun is the head modified by preceding or following lexical items, are a major vehicle of written academic English. However, CNPs are typically not explicitly addressed in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs for English language learners (ELLs) for reading purposes even though they present considerable challenges to ELLs in terms of processing and comprehension. This manuscript-based doctoral dissertation reports on a quasi-experimental mixed methods study that aims to investigate whether explicit instruction on the structure of CNPs and the parsing and paraphrasing strategies aimed to help the students expediently and accurately interpret them results in more accurate interpretation of sentences containing them. A two-phase mixed-methods study resulted in three publications in peer-reviewed journals. Phase 1 of the study involved designing and validating a pilot CNP comprehension test and investigating the specific challenges ELLs may have with processing and interpreting various CNPs. The results of both the CNP test and the interviews signal significant CNP parsing and interpretation challenges on the part of EAP students, identify the types of CNPs and the parsing and interpretation tasks that they find especially challenging, and underscore the need for explicit instruction on the structure of CNPs for reading purposes. Phase 2 of this study, published as two peer-reviewed articles, involved design and instruction of four teaching modules to an experimental group of 96 first-year EAP students consisting of several college- and university-based EAP classes, and measurement of their success in parsing and paraphrasing CNP through a pre- and a post-test and exit interviews/verbalization task. A comparable control group was given just the pre- and the post-test. The results of Phase 2 of the study suggest that the teaching intervention had a significant effect on the post-test scores, and that the participants considered the CNP reading strategies a useful enhancement of the academic reading curriculum and were able to apply most of the CNP parsing and interpretation strategies in the strategy verbalization task

“All These Nouns Together Just Don’t Make Sense!”: An Investigation of EAP Students’ Challenges with Complex Noun Phrases in First-Year College-Level Textbooks

Complex noun phrases (CNP) are a major vehicle of academic written discourse (Halliday, 1988; 2004). However, in spite of the view that they pose significant challenges to English language learners, they are often overlooked in preparatory English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs. This mixed methods study aims to investigate to what extent CNP present syntactic parsing challenges for upper-level college EAP students, and whether there is a perceived need for direct instruction in CNP in EAP programs. A special CNP proficiency test was administered to 70 upper-level Ontario college EAP students and a native speaker comparator group, and the results were compared with those obtained from interviews with seven of the test-takers. The results obtained from the statistical analyses and the interviews indicate that CNP are challenging to parse for upper-level EAP students and that direct instruction in CNP may be beneficial for improving their reading comprehension. Some teaching implications of the findings are also addressed.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Structured Approach to Form-focused Instruction for Reading Comprehension in EAP

Complex noun phrases (CNP) are a major vehicle of academic written discourse (Halliday, 1988/2004). However, despite the view that they pose significant challenges to English language learners, they are rarely taught in college-based English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs, especially for the purposes of improving reading comprehension.  This article presents a teaching intervention that integrates explanations on and practice with the structure and use of these types of CNP in an EAP program at a large Canadian college.  This specially designed teaching intervention was integrated within a standard curriculum in a non-credit preparatory EAP Reading course. Drawing on the research that has identified elements of syntactic parsing ability instrumental in successful processing and interpretation of CNP, this article describes the reading strategies taught in this intervention and reports on student feedback. It concludes with a discussion on potential improvements to the learning tasks

The Vanishing Pronoun: A Case Study of Language Attrition in Russian

Abstract This study presents a shifting pattern in the use of second person singular pronouns of address in Russian by adult Russian immigrants in Toronto. The newly developing pattern is treated as a case of L1 attrition. The observed changes to the pronominal system of Russian are discussed in the framework typically employed in language attrition literature, with reference to various linguistic phenomena such as lexical transfer, simplification of morphosyntax, markedness theory and competence vs. performance attrition. Reference is also made to sociolinguistic phenomena such as L1/L2 use in sociolinguistic domains, ethnolinguisitic vitality and shift in cultural identity

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
