Search for violation in decays and observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay
We search for violation by measuring a -odd asymmetry in the
Cabibbo-suppressed decay, and
in the Cabibbo-favored and
decays. We use 980 of data collected by the Belle detector running at the KEKB
asymmetric-energy collider. The -violating -odd parameter
is measured to be
and
where the first
uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also report the
first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay . The branching fraction is measured relative to
that of the analogous Cabibbo-favored decay :
Precise measurement of the branching fractions for B-s(0) -> D-s(()*()+) D-s(()*()-) and first measurement of the D-s*(+) D-s*(-) polarization using e(+)e(-) collisions
We have made a precise measurement of the absolute branching fractions of B-s(0) -> D-s(()*()+) D-s(()*()-) decays using 121.4 fb(-1) of data recorded by the Belle experiment running at the Upsilon(5S) resonance. The results are B(B-s(0) -> D-s(+) D-s(-)) = 0.58(-0.09)(+0.11) +/- 0.13)%, B(B-s(0) -> D-s*(+/-) D-s(-/+)) = (1.76(-0.22)(+0.23) +/- 0.40)%, and B(B-s(0) -> D-s*(+) D-s*(-)) = (1.98(-0.31-0.50)(+0.33+0.52))%; the sum is B(B-s(0) -> D-s(()*()+) D-s(()*()-)) = (4.32(-0.39-1.03)(+0.42+1.04))%. Assuming B-s(0) -> D-s(()*()+) D-s(()*()-) saturates decays to CP-even final states, the branching fraction constrains the ratio Delta Gamma(s)/cos phi(12), where Delta Gamma(s) is the difference in widths between the two B-s-(B) over bar (s) mass eigenstates, and phi(12) is the CP-violating phase in B-s-(B) over bar (s) mixing. We also measure for the first time the longitudinal polarization fraction of B-s(0) -> D-s*(+) D-s*(-); the result is 0.06(-0.17)(+0.18) +/- 0.03. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevD.87.031101LPH
Receipt for taxes paid of S. H. Woodward and D. S. Spaulding from W. H. Riley, tax collector, Jefferson County, Alabama, January 10, 1877
A document from an extensive collection spanning four generations of the Woodward family that operated merchant pig iron companies in West Virginia and Alabama. The collection begins with Stimpson Harvey Woodward (S. H. Woodward), a native of Massachusetts, who moved from Pittsburgh to Wheeling, West Virginia in 1852. He had interests in an iron company as early as 1852 in West Virginia and began Alabama operations in 1869. The family business continued in Alabama until the death of S. H. Woodward's great-grandson in 1965
Search for CP violation in D-(s)(+) -> h(+) pi(0) and decays D-(s)(+) -> h(+) eta decays
Searches for CP violation in the two-body decays D(s)+→h+π0 and D(s)+→h+η (where h+ denotes a π+ or K+ meson) are performed using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment corresponding to either 9 fb−1 or 6 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. The π0 and η mesons are reconstructed using the e+e−γ final state, which can proceed as three-body decays π0→ e+e−γ and η → e+e−γ, or via the two-body decays π0→ γγ and η → γγ followed by a photon conversion. The measurements are made relative to the control modes D(s)+→KS0h+ to cancel the production and detection asymmetries. The CP asymmetries are measured to beACP(D+→π+π0)=(−1.3±0.9±0.6)%,ACP(D+→K+π0)=(−3.2±4.7±2.1)%,ACP(D+→π+η)=(−0.2±0.8±0.4)%,ACP(D+→K+η)=(−6±10±4)%,ACP(Ds+→K+π0)=(−0.8±3.9±1.2)%,ACP(Ds+→π+η)=(0.8±0.7±0.5)%,ACP(Ds+→K+η)=(0.9±3.7±1.1)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These results are consistent with no CP violation and mostly constitute the most precise measurements of ACP in these decay modes to date. [Figure not available: see fulltext.
Search for CP violation in D(s)+→h+π0 and D(s)+→h+η decays
Searches for CP violation in the two-body decays D-(s)(+) -> h(+)pi(0) and D-(s)(+) -> h(+)eta (where h(+) denotes a pi(+) or K+ meson) are performed using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment corresponding to either 9 fb(-1) or 6 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity. The pi(0) and eta mesons are reconstructed using the e(+) e(-)gamma final state, which can proceed as three-body decays pi(0) -> e(+) e(-) gamma and eta -> e(+) e(-)gamma, or via the two-body decays pi(0) -> gamma gamma and eta -> gamma gamma followed by a photon conversion. The measurements are made relative to the control modes D-(s)(+) K(S)(0)h(+) to cancel the production and detection asymmetries. The CP asymmetries are measured to be A(CP)(D+ -> pi(+)pi(0)) = (-1.3 +/- 0.9 +/- 0.6)%, A(CP)(D+ -> K+pi(0)) = (- 3.2 +/- 4.7 +/- 2.1)%, A(CP)(D+ -> pi(+)eta) = (-0.2 +/- 0.8 +/- 0.4)%, A(CP)(D+ -> K+eta) = (-6 +/- 10 +/- 4 )%, A(CP)(D-s(+) -> K+pi(0)) = (-0.8 +/- 3.9 +/- 1.2)%, A(CP)(D-s(+) -> pi(+)eta) = ( 0.8 +/- 0.7 +/- 0.5)%, A(CP)(D-s(+) -> K+eta) = ( 0.9 +/- 3.7 +/- 1.1)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These results are consistent with no CP violation and mostly constitute the most precise measurements of A(CP) in these decay modes to date

A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1
Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1
Search for rare decays , , , and
7 pages, 2 figuresInternational audienceWe present a study of rare decay modes , , and , where denotes the neutral mesons or , using a data sample of events produced at the resonance. The data were collected by the Belle detector operating at the asymmetric-energy KEKB collider. We observe no evidence for these decays, so we provide upper limits at the 90 confidence level on the branching fractions of , , and decay modes. Along with rare decay modes, we report improved measurements of the color-suppressed decay branching fractions = (26.6 1.2 2.1) and = (5.6 0.5 0.2) . The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively
Exclusive production of Ds+Ds-,D-s*D-+(s)-, and D-s*D-+(s)*(-) via e(+)e(-) annihilation with initial-state radiation
We perform a study of exclusive production of Ds+Ds-,D-s*(+),D-s(-), and D-s*D-+(s)*- final states in initial-state radiation events from e(+)e(-) annihilations at a center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV, to search for charmonium 1(--) states. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 525 fb(-1) and was recorded by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II storage ring. Ds+Ds-,D-s*(+),D-s(-) and ,D-s*(+),D-s*(-) mass spectra show evidence of the known psi resonances. Limits are extracted for the branching ratios of the decays X(4260) -> D-s(()*()+) D-s(()*()-
