Vatt Samrong Ek: the Inscription, the Buddha Pedestal, and the Numbers

One of the two dates mentioned on the pedestal of a Buddha image kept at Vatt Samrong Ek (Tra Vinh Province, Vietnam) contains an error in reckoning that has so far not been explained. But if we look at how the intervals between the years involved should have been calculated and how the author actually calculated them, we can see how the error came about.L’une des deux dates contenues dans l’inscription figurant sur le socle d’une statue de Buddha conservée au Vatt Samrong Ek (dans la province de Tra Vinh au Viêt-nam) est visiblement erronée et cette erreur est restée jusqu’ici inexpliquée. Toutefois, si l’on se figure comment l’intervalle entre les dates concernées aurait dû être calculé et comment il l’a effectivement été par l’auteur de l’inscription, il est possible de comprendre comment l’erreur s’est produite.Eade Chris. Eccentric orbits and apsidal motion in the eclipsing binaries EK Cep and HS Her

We present the first modern analysis of two young eclipsing binaries, EK Cep and HS Her, based on new ground-based CCD multicolour light curves and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observations, radial velocity curves, and eclipse timing measurements. The orbital and stellar parameters of the stars are determined by Roche modelling, and their evolutionary status is examined using a grid of isochrones and evolutionary tracks. We find that HS Her is 25-32 Myr old and its components are on the zero-age main sequence (ZAMS); at the age of 16-20 Myr, the primary of EK Cep is also on the ZAMS, but its secondary is a pre-main-sequence star. Both binaries have slightly eccentric orbits and display apsidal motion. Based on updated eclipse timings and spectroscopic evidence, we rule out the presence of a previously hypothesized tertiary component in HS Her. © 2022 The Author(s)

Wage policies and the integration of immigrants

    No full text
Most Nordic countries struggle with the integration of low-skilled immigrants. Relying on research from primarily the Nordics, we discuss to what extent minimum wage reductions can improve labour market prospects for immigrants, whether unskilled and low-pay jobs serve as stepping stones to more qualified and higher-paid jobs and how wages of incumbent workers would be affected by lower minimum wages. We argue that targeted minimum wage reductions aimed at new, previously non-existing jobs and increased differentiation of minimum wages according to experience provide an appropriate balance between the conflicting goals of high employment and low wage inequality. This is a slightly longer version of Ek and Skedinger (2019), We thank Pernilla Andersson Joona, the editors, participants at the seminar arranged by Nordregio on November 6, 2018, and an anonymous reviewer for valuable comments and suggestions. The second author gratefully acknowledges financial support from Jan Wallanders och Tom Hedelius stiftelse and the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation.</p

The aim of this study is to analyze the possibilities and strategies for constructing images of the body in the art of dance, as well as to describe the discourse of carnality created by dance. The author uses a methodology based on critical theory. Research material, i.e. the choreography by Mats Ek, allow to applied to the study categories "the scene" and "the obscene" created by Lynda Nead. Through the analysis of movements, gestures and postures used in the different styles of Western dance, the author approaches to describe images of femininity and masculinity created by the art of dance

This article seeks to explore the link between literature and history in contemporary indigenous literature, with the novel Ixbalam-ek ‘ by the Tsotsil author Ruperta Bautista, through Gerald Genette’stheory of hypertextuality. It is intended to demonstrate, by means of four of the seven categories that integrate hypertextuality, how the novel presents a connection with ancient Mayan texts such as the Popol Vuh and the Chilam Balam.El presente artículo busca explorar el vínculo de la literatura y la historia en la literatura indígena contemporánea, en la novela Ixbalam-ek’ de la autora tsotsil Ruperta Bautista, a través de la teoríade la hipertextualidad de Gerald Genette. What do we know about UK household adaptation to climate change? A systematic review

    No full text
The UK Government’s first National Adaptation Programme seeks to create a ‘climate-ready society’ capable of making well-informed and far-sighted decisions to address risks and opportunities posed by a changing climate, where individual households are expected to adapt when it is in their interest to do so. How, and to what extent, households are able to do this remains unclear. Like other developed countries, research on UK adaptation has focused predominately on public and private organisations. To fill that gap, a systematic literature review was conducted to understand what actions UK households have taken in response to, or in anticipation of, a changing climate; what drives or impedes these actions; and whether households will act autonomously. We found that UK households struggle to build long-term adaptive capacity and are reliant upon traditional reactive coping responses. Of concern is that these coping responses are less effective for some climate risks (e.g. flooding); cost more over the long-term; and fail to create household capacity to adapt to other stresses. While low-cost, low-skill coping responses were already being implemented, the adoption of more permanent physical measures, behavioural changes, and acceptance of new responsibilities are unlikely to happen autonomously without further financial or government support. If public policy on household adaptation to climate change is to be better informed than more high-quality empirical research is urgently needed

The article discusses personal experiences gained by a teacher in gender studies and how she has addressed challenges such as the theoretical development and institutionalization of feminist theory on one hand, and the increasingly widened enrollment to higher education on the other. The argumentation is underpinned by concrete examples taken from a course where feminist poststructuralism is introduced. Special reference is made to Donna Haraway’s epistemological standpoint that all knowledge production is situated and that knowledge, in itself, always has social implications. If we transfer these insights to our classrooms, we need to consider how we, as teachers, articulate, motivate and establish our own culture of academic knowledge production. The power, in this situation, concerns how we relate to clashes of interests and the diversity of the range of possibilities, both in the interaction between teacher and student and between the students themselves. How we relate to these issues will result in different opportunities for different students to conquer the conceptual tools the course is aimed to give them. The author is therefore both giving arguments and, with practical examples, showing how an approach based on ‘walking your own talks’ can facilitate more equal power relations in our increasingly diverse classrooms.</p
