    No full text
INDEXACIÓN: SCOPUS.Objectives: To provide a comprehensive CERT (Consensus on Exercise Reporting Template)-based description of the resistance exercise program implemented in the AGUEDA (Active Gains in brain Using Exercise During Aging) study, a randomized controlled trial investigating the effects of a 24-week supervised resistance exercise program on executive function and related brain structure and function in cognitively normal older adults. Design and Participants: 90 cognitively normal older adults aged 65 to 80 were randomized (1:1) to a: 1) resistance exercise group; or a 2) wait-list control group. Participants in the exercise group (n = 46) performed 180 min/week of resistance exercise (3 supervised sessions per week, 60 min/session) for 24 weeks. Intervention: The exercise program consisted of a combination of upper and lower limb exercises using elastic bands and the participant’s own body weight as the main resistance. The load and intensity were based on the resistance of the elastic bands (7 resistances), number of repetitions (individualized), motor complexity of exercises (3 levels), sets and rest (3 sets/60 sec rest), execution time (40–60 sec) and velocity (as fast as possible). Settings: The maximum prescribed-target intensity was 70–80% of the participants’ maximum rate of perceived exertion (7–8 RPE). Heart rate, sleep quality and feeling scale were recorded during all exercise sessions. Those in the wait-list control group (n = 44) were asked to maintain their usual lifestyle. The feasibility of AGUEDA project was evaluated by retention, adherence, adverse events and cost estimation on the exercise program. Results and Conclusions: This study details the exercise program of the AGUEDA trial, including well-described multi-language manuals and videos, which can be used by public health professionals, or general public who wish to implement a feasible and low-cost resistance exercise program. The AGUEDA exercise program seems to be feasible by the high retention (95.6%) and attendance rate (85.7%), very low serious adverse event (1%) and low economic cost (144.23 € /participant/24 weeks). We predict that a 24-week resistance exercise program will have positive effects on brain health in cognitively normal older adults. © 2023, The Author(s)

This article offers a reflection on the evaluation standards of journals about education operated by official development agencies and by the own editors of books and magazines. Based on the experience as editor and as author, it was possible to problematize the purposes expressed by the control mechanisms, classification and ranking, questioning the genesis of these processes. And, when confronting the debate concerning the theme with the documents prepared by the Committee on Education of CAPES - responsible for evaluating and accrediting courses of the National Higher Education System, which includes the qualification of magazines and books- you reach a vision of the shocks within the area of knowledge, as well as the relationships within the national and international scientific field are revealed.251779

This article offers a reflection on the evaluation standards of journals about education operated by official development agencies and by the own editors of books and magazines. Successful strategies to generate community involvement in solid waste management: Three case studies in the Philippines

    No full text
This thesis presents three success stories in solid waste management in the Philippines which focused on approaches toward community participation. Two cases highlighted the local government efforts in the conversion of the open garbage dumpsites into a waste processing zone i.e. the Controlled Waste Disposal Facility in Payatas, Quezon City, Metro Manila, and the Eco-Waste Processing Center in Los Banos, Laguna. The other case was an information, education and communication-based project of the author in Barangay Masili, City of Calamba, also in Laguna, with emphasis on community consciousness in solid waste segregation for a cleaner environment. Solid waste is one of the country's major issues confronting the community and the local government units. The legislation of RA 9003, the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act in 2001, addressed this phenomenon by calling for the involvement of all sectors, primarily the local authorities together with the community. This research examines the commonality and uniqueness of the strategies employed to encourage people's mobilization in managing solid waste. It was found that participation starts from a deepening awareness of people about the problems affecting them, getting involved, and becoming responsive when they understand its potential benefits. Participation is deeply anchored in political mobilization where leaders take the initiative and the will to make a difference in the community. Strong advocacy in the furtherance of community awareness and consciousness in relevant programs together with the stakeholders' partnership and networking play a very important role.M.A

With the present scientific article the main results of the research activity will be revealed, with the objective of determining how they are manifested in elderly patients attending the hospital IESS of Babahoyo, drugs that according to Beers are potentially inadequate. In order to fulfill the objectives and consequently to contribute to the solution of the scientific problem, we used methods of the theoretical and empirical level of scientific research, as well as mathematical and statistical methods. In order to achieve a broad, systematic and profound view of the drugs, retrospective, observational and cross-sectional studies were performed in the operational research. The prescription of drugs in older adults is determined by a series of tools, which specify the use or not of a given drug, being the most used, according to studies made by the author of the present, the criteria of Beers, these have been analyzed by A considerable number of authors, however, have not been found references of pharmacoepidemiological studies carried out in Ecuador using this instrument, which also took into account, physical development and living conditions among other factors, so it was believed It is opportune to study the manifestation of potentially inappropriate drugs in elderly people aged 65 years or more treated in the IESS of Babahoyo. In the research, a system and methodological indications, aimed at supporting the prescription of drugs in the elderly, were achieved as main results. Correspondence: [email protected] (L.A.C.R.); [email protected] (S.C.)The production of backyard chickens is an activity of great importance in the economy of rural families in Paraguay. The Rustipollos population was created through directed crosses between a commercial meat line and a local population belonging to non-specific breeds but phenotypically assimilated to Creole breeds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity, relationship, and structure of Rustipollos using 29 microsatellite markers. Analysis was performed on 50 Rustipollos animals and 926 other individuals as reference breeds/populations from Europe, Africa, South, and North America. A total of 318 alleles were detected, with a mean of 10.97 per locus. The polymorphic information content indicated that 80% of all loci were highly to moderately informative. Only two breeds/populations showed loci that did not deviate from the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. The results of genetic diversity indexes suggested moderate levels of genetic variability in Rustipollos population and low inbreeding level. The genetic differentiation index indicates a high genetic differentiation between populations. The results of the Neighbor-Net tree and STRUCTURE analyses indicate the existence of distinct gene pools, with some genetic relationships between Rustipollos, the commercial chicken strain, and south Spanish breeds. The Discriminant Analysis of Principal Components confirmed the observed genetic distances between breeds/populations. The results will be useful for sustainable use and official recognition of this population.Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y TecnologíaPrograma Paraguayo para el Desarrollo de la Ciencia y Tecnología.
