This paper is about the riddle proposed in the pages of El lazarillo de ciegos caminantes. We analyze the text and the information that is available about Alonso Carrio de laVandera and the situation of the Real Renta of Correos in the Viceroyalty of Peru. It also suggets problems that the author and the work might have had to contravene current printing standards in the last quarter of the Eighteenth Century.

The metabolism of polar archaea: is urea playing a role?

Alonso-Sáez, Laura ... et. al.-- 14th International Symposium on Microbial Ecology (ISME14), 19-24 August 2012 Copenhagen, DenmarkAn annual recurrent growth of archaea in winter surface waters has been detected in polar systems. However, the sources of carbon and energy sustaining their growth remain elusive. We collected data on abundance and metabolic activity of Thaumarchaeota in Arctic and Antarctic waters by in situ single-cell analyses. The abundance of archaea grew one order of magnitude throughout the winter in Arctic waters. Yet, paradoxically, analyses by MicroAutoRadiography combined with Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (MAR-FISH) revealed an unexpectedly low metabolic activity of Thaumarchaeota for both polar systems. Less than 5% of all thaumarchaeal cells took up leucine or bicarbonate, inconsistent with currently recognized heterotrophic and autotrophic archaeal lifestyles. To better understand how archaea obtain energy and carbon for growth, we analyzed a metagenome collected during the Arctic winter, when the Thaumarchaeota population was at its maximum of abundance (18% of cell counts). The metagenomic analysis revealed that archaeal amoA genes were abundant, indicating that polar archaea have the potential for ammonia oxidation. Furthermore, the presence of archaeal genes involved in urea transport and degradation suggests that Arctic archaea may use urea as an alternative source of ammonia, and thus energy for growth. Genes encoding ureases were also detected in Antarctic waters, confirming that urea degradation pathways are widespread among polar Thaumarchaeota, and hinting at the potential importance of urea to sustain their growthPeer reviewe

Torus and polar dust emission in GATOS Seyfert galaxies

We used ~0.3” resolution mid-IR observations of nearby Seyferts selected from the Galaxy Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS) and compared them with ALMA far-IR continuum and CO(3-2) observations from García-Burillo+2021. We detected extended mid-IR emission, typically in the polar direction and perpendicular to the ALMA torus, in more than half the sample. The unresolved mid-IR component contributes more than 60% of the emission of these galaxies. The observed Eddington ratios and the ALMA nuclear hydrogen column densities (NH) of ~50% of the sample are favorable to launching polar and/or equatorial dusty winds, according to numerical simulations (Venanzi+2020). We generated new radiative transferCAT3D-WIND disk+wind model (Hoenig & Kishimoto 2017) images at 8, 12, and 700μm, tailored to the properties of the GATOS Seyferts. When convolved to the typical angular resolution of our observations (0.3” in the mid-IR and 0.1” with ALMA), the CAT3D-WIND model images reproduce qualitative aspects of the observed mid- and far-IR morphologies. Low to intermediate values of the wind-to-disk cloud ratio are required to account for the large fractions of unresolved mid-IR emission observed in our sample. In the first part of this article I correct some errors and complete information form y «Bibliografía de Amado Alonso» (Cauce, 18-19/1995-96, 529-561 (en homenaje a Amado Alonso: 1896-1996)). In the second, I offer a summary and commentary of the contents of all the articles and books by Amado Alonso with the aim of awakening the interest of Philology students in this author so that these works will appear again on the curriculum of university studies with all the linguistic, literary and pedagogical research they contain. Lisandro Alonso - gaps of film realism

    No full text
The author of this essay focuses on the films directed by Argentinean filmmaker Lisandro Alonso ("La Libertad"," Los Muertos"," Fantasma and Liverpool"). The article examines the specific film style, focusing on various forms of the cinematic realism. Firstly, the essay proposes the list of the Alonso’s potential protoplasts, confronts the Argentinean filmmaker with the film poetics conceived by Robert Bresson, Béla Tarr and Chantal Akerman. The author claims that the Alonso’s conception updates Bressonian idea of “cinematography”, although Argentinean director rejects the process of semiotic synthesis, instead proposing the uniqueness of the characters, the purest realism – ancillary to the landscape and the actor. Besides, Syska describes the distancing techniques used by Alonso, ellipsis in the film plot, the avoidance of the punchlines and the specific nature of the subjectivity located inside the classical objective narration (e.g. the analysis of a sleep scene from the movie La Libertad). The author also analyzes the temporal relations in Alonso’s films – using the term called present tense progressive

Quixano as Reader, Quixote as Author

    No full text
Cervantes\u27 17th century novel, Don Quixote, details the story of passive, stagnant Alonso Quixano, who then abruptly declares himself Don Quixote, a chivalric knight who goes on to fight passionately for his identity and reality. In his dying moments, however, he once more becomes Alonso Quixano, just as abruptly renouncing his previously-claimed identity. Cervantes\u27 work demands discussions of reality, identity, and above all, authenticity. The following paper explores the differences between Alonso Quixano and Don Quixote on these fronts, and argues that Don Quixote, author of his own life, demonstrates authenticity, while Alonso Quixano does not
