Stages for the More Sustainable Farm
Currently, agricultural farm units are faced with a double and most times contradictory challenge, in order to be successful: on the one hand the invested capital has to be profitable and the economic performance has to be maximised. On the other hand, given the socio-environmental situation, it is necessary to preserve and to protect the environment and natural resources. Given the potential conflict of the two aims, since the satisfaction of one implies the underperformance of the other (and vice versa), the question then is: which is the solution to choose? We intend, in this work, to formulate a farm plan with the purpose of reconciling the criteria of environmental sustainability with that of economic competitiveness. For this achievement we proceed to the comparative study of sustainability of different groups of farms identified in the study area (first evaluation cycle) through MESMIS (“Marco para la Evaluación de Sistemas de Manejo de Recursos Naturales Mediante Indicadores de Sustentabilidad” - Framework for Evaluation of Natural-Resource Systems Handling through Sustainability Indicators) methodology, that allowed to select the more sustainable group of farms. Based on the found potentialities and weakness on these production systems, we stepped to the planning of a production unit of bovine meat, which obeys simultaneously to economic and environmental objectives, using Multicriteria Decision. We finished the work with the sustainability evaluation between groups of farms identified previously and the planned farms (second evaluation cycle), based, again, in the MESMIS methodology, to confirm (or not) the greatest sustainability of the last ones. Analyses of the results allow us to confirm the greatest relative sustainability of the planned farm, for the diverse traced scenarios.Decision taking, planning, sustainability, Environmental Economics and Policy, Farm Management,
Reescrita de si pelo outro: identidade portuguesa e paródia em Deus-dará, de Alexandra Lucas Coelho / Rewriting oneself through the other: Portuguese identity and parody in Deus-dará, by Alexandra Lucas Coelho
Abstract: The article observes how the novel Deus-dará, by Alexandra Lucas Coelho, a Portuguese contemporary writer consists in an exercise of renegotiation for the Portuguese identity in relation to issues that refer to the colonization process in Brazil. Moreover, this text seeks to show how parody as a fictional literary strategy helps the author in expressing a necessity and a possibility of redefining oneself through the other, in a direction that goes in the opposite way of the colonial speech. This necessity and this possibility also appear in the author’s interviews and travel books, such as Vai, Brasil and Cinco Voltas na Bahia e um beijo para Caetano Veloso, which will also be mentioned in this article. Keywords: Portuguese identity; parody; post-modernism; Portuguese contemporary writing; Alexandra Lucas Coelho

Lycophron’s Alexandra is a Hellenistic poem in which a messenger reports the prophecies that he heard Cassandra pronounce within the cell where she was arrested by his father, Priam. In this poem we find a number of features that show that its author was greatly influenced by the Tragedy of the fifth century B. C. In this paper, I intend to examine the elements that characterize this influence in the poem and, in conclusion, I want to deal with the performance possibilities of such a composition. In the most recent texts of the critics, the prevailing idea is that the Alexandra would have been written for highly educated Alexandrian readers. However, I defend the idea that perhaps Lycophron has composed his poem thinking of a sort of recitation, even if it was for a highly prepared public.
In swine slaughterhouses, many problems are observed in relation to the floors, such as holes, cracks, accentuated wear, breaks, detachment of layers, formation of dust, deterioration of joins and others which are types of pathologies caused by different aggressive agents such as urine, feces, blood, fat, salt, hot and cold water, chemical products from the production process and also those employed in the various cleaning activities, such as detergents and sanitizers, besides mechanical means used in operations involving the movement of loads, which are highly abrasive and have a damaging effect on surfaces. This study aimed to identify and characterize the agents present in the installations, and to recommend materials to better resist the aggressive agents, minimizing the degradation of the floors. In most sectors of slaughterhouses, it is not possible to change the environmental conditions due to the production processes, thus, the alternative is to better the procedures for the making and use of new floors, creating mechanisms which can bar these agents. Taking into consideration the data obtained in this research, a classification based on the degree of aggressiveness, as a function of the aggressive agents acting on the floors in each sector, was suggested. According to this classification, a proposal for the use of special coverings which, when applied over the concrete floors, would endure the aggressive intruders, was presented. The results showed that these coverings, when used according to the recommendations of this study, lead to the obtainment of better quality floors, with higher durability, since they have a great chemical and physical resistance capacity. Thus, they will have a longer useful life with less intervention for improvements, reducing the quantity of technical stoppages required to carry out small repairs or replacements. It is concluded that the use of these materials reduces the maintenance costs and also eliminates a large number of the pathologies verified, which facilitates the production processes and also the internal activities of the movement of raw materials and finished products. Other results were a clear reduction in the microbiological contamination problems of these environments and a significantly better esthetic appearance of industrial floors

Athaliah and Alexandra: Gender and Queenship in Josephus [Author Accepted Manuscript]
Athaliah and Alexandra were the only two women to rule as queens of Judah/Judaea in their own right and both women’s reigns are reported in Josephus’ writings. Despite their uniqueness, however, Athaliah and Alexandra are rarely compared in scholarship; the former is usually dismissed, and focus centred on the latter. This article contends that there are historical similarities between the two, but literary differences. Josephus could have referred to Athaliah or used elements of her portrayal in his presentation of Alexandra but does not, creating the impression that Alexandra was completely different to her predecessor. It may be instructive, therefore, to consider why Josephus literarily isolates the queens and what this means for his interpretation of Alexandra
Family context and duration of untreated psychosis (DUP): Results from the Sao Paulo Study
Background: Duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) depends on several factors, including socio-demographic, socioeconomic, clinical and contextual circumstances, such as availability of mental health services. Living arrangements may also play a role, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where most people who develop psychosis live with their relatives. Methods: Population-based study of first-episode psychosis in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Participants were aged 18-64 years, lived in a defined geographic area of the city and had a first contact in life with mental health services due to a psychotic episode. Duration of untreated psychosis was defined as the period between onset of first psychotic symptom and first contact with health service due to psychosis. The median DUP was used to classify participants into short and long DUP. Psychopathology, social adjustment and psychiatric diagnoses were made with standardized assessments. Type of service sought and living arrangements were examined. Results: Two hundred participants were included (52% women, 61% non-affective psychoses). The median DUP was 4.1 weeks (inter-quartile range: 1.9-11.4), and was shorter for affective psychoses. Most participants had their first contact with psychiatric emergency services. Those who did not live with a relative (children older than 18 years, parents, partner) were more likely to present long DUP (OR: 2.63; 95%Cl: 0.98-7.04); p = 0.05). Conclusion: The DUP in Sao Paulo was shorter than expected. Living arrangements may play an important role in shortening the DUP in urban centres of low- and middle income countries that have a network of mental health services. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V.
