MALDI-TOF MS characterization of proanthocyanidins from cranberry fruit (Vaccinium macrocarpon) that inhibit tumor cell growth and matrix metalloproteinase expression in vitro
Proanthocyanidin-rich extracts were prepared by fractionation of the fruit of the North American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon). In vitro growth inhibition assays in eight tumor cell lines showed that selected fractions inhibited the growth of H460 lung tumors, HT-29 colon and K562 leukemia cells at GI(50) values ranging from 20 to 80 mu g ml(-1). Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) of one of these fractions found it to be composed of polyflavan-3-ols, which are primarily tetramers through heptamers of epicatechin containing one or two A-type linkages. Whole cranberry extract and the proanthocyanidin fractions were screened for effect on the expression of matrix metalloproteinases in DU 145 prostate carcinoma cells. The expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 was inhibited in response to whole cranberry extract and to a lesser degree by the proanthocyanidin fractions. Coelho Neto Canibal: Pseudônimos shakespearianos e literatura licenciosa no Brasil (1890-1940) / Coelho Neto Cannibal: Shakespearean pseudonyms and licentious literature in Brazil (1890-1940)
Abstract: This work studies the trajectory of the Shakespearean pseudonym “Caliban”, adopted by writer Henrique Coelho Neto (1864-1934) in the 1890s to convey licentious literature in print. We follow the pseudonym from its debut until its last appearance in the publishing world in the 1940s. To carry out the task, we consulted the books published by Caliban and investigated his performance in the periodic press through online consultation of newspapers in the Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira. Caliban was a successful author and part of that recognition came from the erudite origin of his name. The Shakespearean filter was crucial for the acceptance of this literature in literary circuits, but many considered it as mere pornography. Caliban’s literature reveals a modern, challenging and innovative Coelho Neto who has been overlooked by critical tradition. Keywords: Coelho Neto; William Shakespeare; Caliban; licentious literature
Finite Displacement Analysis Of Plates Subjected To Flexure And Compression Using The Boundary Element Method
The generalized plane stress problem is coupled with the classic bending model using the effect of the finite displacements to analyze plates under combined loads. The direct boundary integral equations are derived from the equilibrium equations. Continuous or discontinuous linear boundary elements can be employed according to the boundary value problem and constant domain elements are introduced to consider the effect of the finite displacements. Compressed plates problems are studied with the shortening introduced by a uniform displacement applied on both edges to approach the numerical model to that used in the laboratorial experimentation. Obtained results are compared to those available from the literature.161168Gospodinov, G., Ljutskanov, D., The boundary element method applied to plates (1982) Appl. Maternal separation effects on the behavior, innate immunity and tumor growth
Maternal separation is one model of stress/anxiety induction. We know about it that the mammals normal emotional behavior development depends on the interaction between mother and younglet. Beside this, early life stressed events can induce deletery effects in immune response and to illness resistance for all life long. In this work we searched for the maternal separation effects on the behavior, innate immunity and tumor growth in an adult male mice offspring. Our results showed that the maternal separation, in A/J mice (1) had no big effects in the behavior and in the hematological parameters (before and after the tumor growth), (2) increased the neutrophil and alveolar macrophages activity (before and after the tumor growth), (3) increased the serotonin striatum levels, the 5-HIAA metabolite and the dopamine turnover (4) decreased the corticosterone serum levels and (5) had no effects on tumor incidence. In the C57BL/6 mice, the maternal separation induced an anxiety behavior and increased the neutrophil activity. These results suggest that the maternal separation could have produced alterations in neuroimmune activity, modifying the HPA axis activity and these alterations could be influenced by individual strains characteristics
Tropical ginsberg: the resonance of Allen Ginsberg on the Tropicália
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2010Through a dialogical relation between poems and song lyrics, and the socio-political contexts which surrounded these texts, this research discusses the resonance that North American poet, Allen Ginsberg, had over the Brazilian musical movement, the Tropicália. The corpora are the poems "Howl" (1956), "America" (1956), "Supermarket in California" (1955), "Sunflower Sutra" (1955), "Song" (1954), and "Wild Orphan" (1952), written by Allen Ginsberg, and the songs "Batmacumba" (1968), composed by Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil, "Baby" (1968), composed by Caetano Veloso, "Geléia Geral" (1968), composed by Gilberto Gil and Torquato Neto, "Alegria, Alegria" (1967), composed by Caetano Veloso, and "Domingo no Parque" (1967), composed by Gilberto Gil. The main theoretical and critical parameters of this research include: Mikhail Bakhtin and his reflections on intertextuality; James J. Farrell, who believes that the American counterculture began with the Beats; Claudio Willer, who stresses the importance of Allen Ginsberg to the Beat movement, as well as to the birth of the American counterculture; Christopher Dunn, who emphasizes the historical, social, and political relevance of the Tropicália; and Celso Favaretto, who discusses in depth the complexity of most of the Tropicália songs. Based on such parameters, this research suggests that the life and work of Allen Ginsberg had great resonance over the creation of the Tropicália.
Combined wind lidar and cloud radar for high-resolution wind profiling
This paper introduces an experimental setup for retrieving horizontal wind speed and direction profiles with a high temporal and vertical resolution for process studies and validation of convection-permitting model simulations. The CMTRACE (tracing convective momentum transport in complex cloudy atmospheres) campaign used collocated wind lidar and cloud radar measurements to retrieve seamless wind profiles from near the surface up to cloud tops. It took place in Cabauw, the Netherlands, between 13 September and 3 October 2021. The intermediate processing steps for generating the level 1 and level 2 data, such as second trip echoes filtering, offset correction, wind retrieval, re-gridding, and flagging, are described. In level 1 (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6926483, Dias Neto, 2022a), the data from lidar and radars are kept in the original spatial and temporal resolution, while in level 2 (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6926605, Dias Neto, 2022b), they are regridded to a common spatial and temporal resolution. Statistical analyses of the lidar's and radar's wind speed and direction profiles indicate a correlation higher than 0.95 for both variables. The bias of wind direction and speed calculated between radar's and lidar's observations are 0.24∘ and −0.16 m s−1, respectively. The foreseen initial application of the datasets includes the study of convective momentum transport and its validation in regional weather forecasts and large-eddy simulation hindcasts.Atmospheric Remote Sensin
Abstract: In 1987, when the João Cabral de Melo Neto’s collection of poems was published under the title of Crime in Calle Relator (1987), “A sevilhana que não se sabia” was the second in the order of exhibition, shortly after the poem of the same name to the book. That poem was reproduced as the first of the author’s next collection, titled Sevilha andando (1989), while it ceased to appear in the reissues of the book in which it was initially listed. Thus, the poem that was from one book began to compose another, exclusively, at the initiative of the author himself, for whom it mattered the constitution of the aesthetic artifact that the book comes to be. This differential trait in the author’s trajectory focuses retrospectively on all his work, from this remarkable event that interferes with the understanding of what constitutes a book, be it its publication or the meeting of poems that demands an appreciation particularized, on a case-by-case basis, of the poems intertwined with each other. Following the repercussion of the poem in the context of the poetic work, it will be made a comparison between the available editions of the volumes involved, to reach a more palpable understanding of the poem, perspectived throughout that poetic production. Keywords: modern Brazilian poetry; João Cabral de Melo Neto; style; publishing
Gift Young Engineers: An Extra-Curricular Initiative for Updating Computer and Electrical Engineering Courses
The curricula of engineering courses are well defined by the central government for all Brazilian universities. Indeed, there are some mandatory determinations that must be fulfilled prior to the accreditation of any engineering course in Brazil. Modifications must be submitted for evaluation beforehand, resulting in a process that sometimes takes years to be approved. That is a secure way to guarantee that the fundamentals of each engineering program will be part of the students’ carrier all over the country, and at the same time a problem when you need to introduce new technological subjects. That poses a problem when you have new demands for technological curricular components that could express the actual state of the art of modern subjects. Trying to solve these issues some professors from the Federal University of Amazonas developed a flexible extra-curricular program for electrical and computer engineering courses, named Gift Young Engineers. This paper describes the philosophy of these extra-curricular programs. Some examples of successful particular partnerships are also discussed. Indeed the proposed training programs for Digital TV Systems (hardware and software) will be presented and analyzed in details. The obtained results will also be discussed in order to contribute to similar experiences worldwide
