Review of Data Collection Methods for Microscopic Traffic Simulation

    No full text
Research into developing more reliable microscopic traffic simulation models is seriously hampered by the availability of suitable microscopic data for calibration and validation purposes. This paper presents a review of several data collection technologies that the authors have been experimenting with. The methods include (i) video recording (ii) the use of differential GPS (DGPS) and (iii) an instrumented vehicle fitted with the S.M.S. Drive Recorder system. Examples of data collection with each method are briefly described, and some of the results presented to illustrate the capabilities of the methods. The last section of the paper summarises the advantages and limitations of each method and conclusions are drawn on their suitability for the required purpose. The experiments shows that each method can provide some useful results for microscopic simulation model development, but cannot provide continuous spacing-, speed- and acceleration profiles of large vehicle platoons moving through various traffic scenarios. Further research is required to develop more sophisticated data collection techniques and to investigate such aspects of driver behaviour as aggressiveness, and factors influencing lane selection

Bathonian (Middle Jurassic) crinoids of the Hidas Valley (Mecsek Mountains, S Hungary) and their biogeographic significance

The Bathonian crinoid fauna that occurs in red nodular limestone and argillaceous limestones from the Hidas Valley, Mecsek Mts (southern Hungary) consists of three isocrinid and six cyrtocrinid species. Isocrinids are represented by Balanocrinus inornatus (d’Orbigny), B. berchteni Hess and Pugin and Balanocrinus sp. Cyrtocrinids are represented by Phyllocrinus stellaris Zaręczny, P. birkenmajeri Głuchowski, P. malbosianus d’Orbigny, Apsidocrinus sp., Lonchocrinus sp., and the new species Psalidocrinus hidasinus sp. nov. This last species is the earliest occurrence of the genus Psalidocrinus previously known from the Early Tithonian to Valanginian. This is the first crinoid fauna described from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) of Hungary. The co-occurrence of isocrinids and cyrtocrinids indicates an environment subject to weak currents. The stratigraphical and geographical distribution of the identified cyrtocrinid genera and species suggests a Tethyan origin and subsequent migration to the northern Tethyan shelf

Value of housework time and changes in traditional economic well-being in Finland in 1979-2000

The paper looks at the change, the level and the structure of income distribution and distribution of consumption possibilities at the individual and at the household level between the years 1979 and 2000. I also pay attention to the development of low incomes when the concept of income is expanded to include a monetary measurement of household production. The paper uses Time Use Data, collected by Statistics Finland in 1979, 1987-1988 and 1999-2000. I find that consumption possibilities are more equally distributed than money income. Household production increases the consumption possibilities of all income groups but its effect is most significant in the low income decile groups. As a share of consumption possibilities, household production forms a significantly more important part for low income households than for high income households. By looking at consumption possibilities we can see a different distribution of economic well-being compared to distribution offered by money income measurement alone.Value of housework time, consumption possibilities, economic well-being, inequality, poverty
