Gender discrimination and its impact on income, productivity, and technical efficiency: evidence from Benin

    No full text
This paper examines the occurrence and impact of gender discrimination in access to production resources on the income, productivity, and technical efficiency of farmers. Through an empirical investigation of farmers from Koussin-Le´le´, a semi-collective irrigated rice scheme in central Benin, we find that female rice farmers are particularly discriminated against with regard to scheme membership and access to land and equipment, resulting in significant negative impacts on their productivity and income. Although women have lower productivity, they are as technically efficient as men. The findings suggest that there is considerable scope for improving the productivity of women through increasing their access to production resources

CASPER: Concordia atmospheric spectroscopy of emitted radiation

    No full text
CASPER (Concordia Atmospheric Spectroscopy of Emitted Radiation) is a spectrometer proposed for installation at Dome C, devoted to measurements of atmospheric emission in the spectral region between 180 μm and 3 mm (3-55 cm-1). This instrument will be able to perform continuous spectral sampling at different altitudes at angular scales of ∼1°. From the recorded data it is possible to extract atmospheric transmittance within 1% in the whole wide operating band, together with water vapour content and O 2 and O3 concentrations. CASPER will allow us to characterize the site for future FIR/mm telescopes. Atmospheric data recorded by CASPER will allow for correction of astrophysical and cosmological observations without the need for telescope-specific procedures and further loss of observation time with more precision in the observations themselves. Calibration of ground-based telescopes on known sky sources is strongly affected by atmospheric absorption. CASPER has this as its primary goal. The spectrometer is based on a Martin-Puplett interferometer. Two data sampling solutions will be performed: phase modulation & fast scan strategy. Sky radiation is collected towards the interferometer by an optical setup that allows the field of view, to explore the full 0 ÷ 90° range of elevation angles. With a low spurious polarization instrument, monitoring of polarized atmospheric contribution will be possible. © EAS, EDP Sciences 2005

The Effect Of Organophilic Montmorillonite On Compatibilization, Morphology And Mechanical And Thermal Properties Of Pa6/ Ldpe Blends [efeito Da Montmorilonita Organifílica Na Compatibilizaç ão E Nas Propriedades Morfológicas, Mecânicas E Térmicas De Blendas De Pa6/ Pebd]

Immiscible blends of polyamide 6 and low density polyethylene were prepared with and without maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene used as a compatibilizer. Organophilic montmorillonite was incorporated in the blends by melt intercalation. Morphological and structural analysis showed good clay dispersion with partially exfoliated and intercalated structures. Phase separation was observed and domains size reduction was induced by the clay and the compatibilizer. Improvement on mechanical properties of compounds was observed, showing the reinforcing effect caused by the clay. Elastic modulus and tensile strength have increased up to 300% and 100%, respectively. The clay showed a positive effect on compatibilization. DSC analysis revealed a new melting peak for PA6 assigned to a new crystalline phase due the clay effect.233410416Wang, L., Xie, X., Su, S., Feng, J., Wilkie, C.A., (2010) Polym. Degrad. Fundamentos da teoria juridica em Norberto Bobbio

    No full text

Analysis of Polarized Dust Emission Using Data from the First Flight of SPIDER

    No full text
Using data from the first flight of Spider and from the Planck High Frequency Instrument, we probe the properties of polarized emission from interstellar dust in the Spider observing region. Component-separation algorithms operating in both the spatial and harmonic domains are applied to probe their consistency and to quantify modeling errors associated with their assumptions. Analyses of diffuse Galactic dust emission spanning the full Spider region demonstrate (i) a spectral energy distribution that is broadly consistent with a modified-blackbody (MBB) model with a spectral index of β d = 1.45 ± 0.05 (1.47 ± 0.06) for E (B)-mode polarization, slightly lower than that reported by Planck for the full sky; (ii) an angular power spectrum broadly consistent with a power law; and (iii) no significant detection of line-of-sight polarization decorrelation. Tests of several modeling uncertainties find only a modest impact (∼10% in σ r ) on Spider’s sensitivity to the cosmological tensor-to-scalar ratio. The size of the Spider region further allows for a statistically meaningful analysis of the variation in foreground properties within it. Assuming a fixed dust temperature T d = 19.6 K, an analysis of two independent subregions of that field results in inferred values of β d = 1.52 ± 0.06 and β d = 1.09 ± 0.09, which are inconsistent at the 3.9σ level. Furthermore, a joint analysis of Spider and Planck 217 and 353 GHz data within one subregion is inconsistent with a simple MBB at more than 3σ, assuming a common morphology of polarized dust emission over the full range of frequencies. This evidence of variation may inform the component-separation approaches of future cosmic microwave background polarization experiments.</p

Genome editing in Kluyveromyces and Ogataea yeasts using a broad-host-range Cas9gRNA co-expression plasmid

    No full text
While CRISPR-Cas9-mediated genome editing has transformed yeast research, current plasmids and cassettes for Cas9 and guide-RNA expression are species specific. CRISPR tools that function in multiple yeast species could contribute to the intensifying research on non-conventional yeasts. A plasmid carrying a pangenomic origin of replication and two constitutive expression cassettes, for Cas9 and a ribozyme-flanked gRNAs was constructed. Its functionality was tested by analyzing inactivation of the ADE2 gene in four yeast species. In two Kluyveromyces species, near-perfect targeting (≥ 96%) and homologous repair (HR) was observed in at least 24% of transformants. In two Ogataea species, Ade- mutants were not observed directly after transformation, but prolonged incubation of transformed cells resulted in targeting efficiencies of 9 to 63% mediated by non-homologous end joining (NHEJ). In a O. parapolymorpha KU80 mutant, deletion of OpADE2 mediated by HR was achieved, albeit at low efficiencies (< 1%). Furthermore the expression of a dual polycistronic gRNA-array enabled simultaneous interruption of OpADE2 and OpYNR1 demonstrating flexibility of ribozyme-flanked gRNA design for multiplexing. While prevalence of NHEJ prevented HR-mediated editing in Ogataea, such targeted editing was possible in Kluyveromyces. This broad-host-range CRISPR/gRNA system may contribute to exploration of Cas9-mediated genome editing in other Saccharomycotina yeasts

Submillimeter Polarization Spectrum of the Carina Nebula

    No full text
Linear polarization maps of the Carina Nebula were obtained at 250, 350, and 500 μm during the 2012 flight of the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope for Polarimetry (BLASTPol). These measurements are combined with Planck 850 μm data in order to produce a submillimeter spectrum of the polarization fraction of the dust emission, averaged over the cloud. This spectrum is flat to within ±15% (relative to the 350 μm polarization fraction). In particular, there is no evidence for a pronounced minimum of the spectrum near 350 μm, as suggested by previous ground-based measurements of other molecular clouds. This result of a flat polarization spectrum in Carina is consistent with recently published BLASTPol measurements of the Vela C molecular cloud and also agrees with a published model for an externally illuminated, dense molecular cloud by Bethell and collaborators. The shape of the spectrum in Carina does not show any dependence on the radiative environment of the dust, as quantified by the Planck-derived dust temperature or dust optical depth at 353 GHz
