Open Archives Initiative Object Reuse and Exchange
Workshop on the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) and peer review journals in Europe : a report
A workshop on the Open Archives Initiative and Peer Review Journals in Europe was held at CERN, in Geneva, from March 22nd to 24th. The purpose of this workshop was to mobilise a group of European scientists and librarians who want to play an active role in organizing a self-managed system for electronic scholarly communication. Such a system should be compliant with the technical standards proposed by the Open Archives Initiative (OAI). The immediate deployment of OAI-compliant e-print repositories was a concrete objective of the workshop. The workshop had a second (exploratory) objective, related to the certification of writings submitted to archives
Exposing and harvesting metadata using the OAI Metadata Harvesting Protocol : a tutorial
In this article I outline the ideas behind the Open Archives Initiative metadata harvesting protocol (OAIMH), and attempt to clarify some common misconceptions. I then consider how the OAIMH protocol can be used to expose and harvest metadata. Perl code examples are given as practical illustration
Open Archives Initiative
This presentation describes the Open Archives Initiative, the protocol for metadata harvesting (OAI-PMH), OAI and ODL open source software, installation of XML software, installation of harvesters, IRDBs, and IRDB user interfaces.Presented at ALA 2002 LITA OSS4LIB Preconferenc

Use of OAI protocol and its impact in digital libraries: a case study in Spain, Portugal and Latin America
The current communication approaches the situation of the development of repositories that use the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) protocol for data collection. These type of digital libraries are undergoing a worldwide boom. This work studies the current state of their implantation in Spain, Portugal and Latin America. In order to do so, the existing projects in the official records have been studied using a methodology beyond the existing records of repositories. It concludes that the situation in 2006 is fairly encouraging in so far as the number of projects, but that it is quite deficient as concerns the quantity of data stored
Open Archives Initiative
This presentation, which was given at the annual meeting of the Society of Scholarly Publishing on June 1, 2000, describes the Open Archives Initiative (OAI), a protocol for exchanging content between digital repositories. The presentation outlines OAI's history, core components, key stakeholders, and ongoing developments.Presented at the Society for Scholarly Publishing: June 1, 200
Developing Seamless Discovery of Scholarly and Trade Journal Resources Via OAI and RSS
The usefulness of online information such as e-publishing and timely notification on the latest scientific or professional news has been widely accepted. However, access to such valuable information is often limited by lack of mechanisms for interoperability and distributed harvesting of the source databases. Following recent experiments at EEVL (Internet Guide to Engineering, Mathematics and Computing [1]), we have shown that emergent web-based technology can effectively and positively impact on access to this online information. The Open Archives Initiative (OAI) [2] is one major effort to address technical interoperability among distributed sources of information. The objective of OAI is to provide a framework to facilitate the discovery of content in distributed archives. RSS [3] is another XML-based format for sharing data on the web. This paper discusses two areas of current development at EEVL. The first is a project to set up a seamless access mechanism based on OAI for an important publisher of scientific journals; the second is a project to release metadata from a consortium of engineering trade information publishers using RSS. Outcomes will include metadata ready to be embedded in various subject-based or institutional portal services, including a bibliographic crosssearch service, and 'one-step' aggregated engineering trade news, jobs and conference services
Digitometric Services for Open Archives Environments
We describe “digitometric” services and tools that add value to open-access eprint archives using the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) Protocol for Metadata Harvesting. Celestial is an OAI cache and gateway tool. Citebase Search enhances OAI-harvested metadata with linked references harvested from the full-text to provide a web service for citation navigation and research impact analysis. Digitometrics builds on data harvested using OAI to provide advanced visualisation and hypertext navigation for the research community. Together these services provide a modular, distributed architecture for building a “semantic web” for the research literature
