Daughter of fortune: Isabel Allende's popularity from a readership perspective
No full textThe primary aim of this thesis is to explore and critically interrogate Isabel Allende’s popularity cross-culturally in Britain and Spain. It analyses readers’ responses to Allende’s works as well as the discourses surrounding her public representation, an approach that is ‘readerly’ but must also take account of production and text. This approach is intended to further the understanding of Allende’s work which so far has always been analysed from a textual perspective. However, the relationship between Allende’s popularity, her texts, public representation and readers has not been yet analysed in detail.This thesis is innovative in other ways too. Methodologically, it approaches readers through the under studied cultural form of the reading group. It also incorporates a comparative dimension by looking at the reception of Allende in two different cultural contexts: the British and Spanish respectively. Finding out about Allende’s popularity has involved asking readers about their reading experiences as well as analysing the production of discourses around her public representation. Paul Ricoeur’s (1984, 1988) perspective on authorial intentions and readers’ responses to texts helps in understanding the intricacies surrounding what is involved in reading any text. It draws attention to Allende’s and her publishers’ authorial strategies, her ‘strategies of persuasion’ and the specificity of the lives and contexts of British and Spanish reading publics. Equally, this ‘readerly’ approach draws on feminist audience research and primarily on the work of Ien Ang and Janice Radway. Their work with viewers and readers respectively is particularly useful in establishing and developing methodological parameters for the study of reading groups. As a whole, this thesis contributes to the understanding of Allende’s cross-cultural popularity by situating readers at the centre

Mandible with two apical teeth; median clypeal lobe undefined, median tooth rounded; frons coriaceous, punctate; eyes weakly setose. Notauli complete; pronotal disc strongly coriaceous. Metasomal tergite II with tergal process with one pair of conspicuous lateral depressions, tubercle present, pit on top and tuft of setae, thick and conspicuous bristles on the border of each depression. Posterior hypopygeal margin straight. Genitalia: paramere with pointed apex, wide, S-shaped, higher than the basiparamere; aedeagal ventral ramus shorter than dorsal body, apex weakly rounded, small projection, laminar; aedeagal dorsal body with two pair of apical lobes, outer lobe long, divergent, apex weakly bifurcated, inner pair membranous; basal process absent; apodeme extending beyond genital ring. Female unknown. Variations. Paramere very arched or slightly arched. Remarks. This species does not fit any other species-group by having the metasomal tergite II with tergal process with one pair of conspicuous lateral depressions, the tubercle present, with a pit on top and tuft of setae, thick and conspicuous bristles on the border of each depression, and the paramere with pointed apex, wide, Sshaped. No full textTese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Literatura, Florianópolis, 2015.Esta tese de doutorado teve por objetivo analisar a trajetória histórica do periódico feminino gaúcho Escrínio, publicado, inicialmente, na cidade de Bagé, (RS), em 2 de janeiro de 1898 e, posteriormente, tendo sido editado nas cidades Sul-rio-grandenses: Rio Grande, Santa Marie e Porto Alegre, esta última onde encerrou suas publicações em 25 de junho de 1910. Editado pela escritora Andradina América de Andrada e Oliveira (1864-1935), o periódico mostrou-se como substrato na consolidação de uma rede de comunicação nas diversas relações estabelecidas entre as mulheres intelectuais no Brasil e fora do país. Nesse contexto, tomou-se não só o periódico como fonte primária de pesquisa, como também os jornais editados em espaços geopolíticos distintos, buscando-se um ponto de contato entre feministas portuguesas e gaúchas. Concomitantemente, ampliou-se o corpus de estudo, considerando-se inserção de Andradina no universo das letras, no exame de algumas suas obras literárias as quais serviram de tribuna para seu um discurso crítico, nos mínimos detalhes da vida cotidiana, ocupando uma relevância no processo de discussões sobre o regime patriarcal, mecanismo dominante da época. Sendo assim, o estudo propiciou o vínculo do periódico e sua redatora, com o pensamento evolutivo do feminismo, promovendo uma reflexão entre gênero, subjetividade e relações de poder, em tempos difíceis para a produção intelectual das mulheres oitocentistas.Abstract : This doctoral thesis aimed to annalyse the historical trajectory of the feminine journal Escrínio, from Rio Grande do Sul, initially published in Bagé on January 2nd, 1898 and, later, edited in the Southern cities of Rio Grande do Sul: Rio Grande, Santa Maria and Porto Alegre, the latter being the one which ended the publishing on June 25th, 1910. Edited by the writer Andradina América de Andrada e Oliveira (1864-1935), the journal proved to be the basis for the consolidation of a communication network in the diverse relations established among the intellectual women in and outside the country. In this context, not only the journal was taken as primary source of research, but also the newspapers which were edited in distinct geopolitical spaces, pursuing a contact point between feminists from Portugal and Rio Grande do Sul (gaúchas). Simultaneously, the corpus of study was broadened, taking into account the insertion of Andradina in the literature universe through the examination of some of her literary work, which served as a platform for her critical speech down to the smallest detail of everyday life. Thus, this study enabled to see the link between the journal and its writer, who showed the evolutionary thought of feminism, promoting reflection towards gender, subjectivity and power relations in difficult times for the intelectual production of women from the nineteenth century
O bibliotecário e a biblioteca: estudo da percepção da atuação do profissional da informação na biblioteca da Escola Estadual Santa Isabel no município de Santa Isabel do Rio Negro
No full textThis paper aims to understand the perception of the school library and the librarian among students at Santa Isabel State School in the municipality of Santa Isabel do Rio Negro, Amazonas state. The research is grounded in the importance of the librarian's role as an information mediator and agent of transformation within the school context, reinforcing their support in the teaching-learning process and promoting access to knowledge. The study adopts a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach, based on literature review and surveys conducted with 22 elementary school students. Findings indicate that students view the library as a space for silence, study, and learning, albeit with limited and sporadic usage tied to academic demands. The image of the librarian, though less directly mentioned, emerges implicitly as a facilitator of information access and school-related activities. Analysis also underscores the active presence of the librarian as crucial in transforming the library into a dynamic, interactive, and culturally relevant environment. It is concluded that enhancing the school library's role requires greater recognition of the librarian's pedagogical partnership and emphasizes information mediation as a fundamental process in knowledge construction.Este trabalho tem como objetivo compreender a imagem da biblioteca escolar e do bibliotecário na percepção dos estudantes da Escola Estadual Santa Isabel no município de Santa Isabel do Rio Negro, no estado do Amazonas. A pesquisa se fundamenta na importância da atuação do profissional bibliotecário como mediador da informação e agente de transformação no contexto escolar, reforçando seu papel no apoio ao processo de ensino-aprendizagem e na promoção do acesso ao conhecimento. O estudo parte de uma abordagem qualitativa, de natureza exploratória e descritiva, com base em revisão de literatura e aplicação de questionários a 22 estudantes do ensino fundamental. Os dados indicam que os alunos reconhecem a biblioteca como um espaço de silêncio, estudo e aprendizado, embora muitos relatem um uso limitado e esporádico, condicionado a demandas escolares. A imagem do bibliotecário, embora menos mencionada diretamente, aparece de forma implícita como um facilitador no acesso à informação e apoio às atividades escolares. A análise também revelou que a presença ativa do bibliotecário é essencial para transformar a biblioteca em um ambiente dinâmico, interativo e culturalmente relevante. Conclui-se que, para fortalecer o papel da biblioteca escolar, é necessário ampliar o reconhecimento do trabalho do bibliotecário como parceiro pedagógico além de destaca a mediação da informação como um processo fundamental na construção do conhecimento.3Si
Humanismo y Reforma en la corte renacentista de Isabel de Vilamarí : Escipión Capece y sus lectoras
No full textDurante la primera mitad del siglo XVI y en la corte salernitana del último príncipe de la casa Sanseverino y de su esposa, Isabel de Vilamarí (noble señora de origen catalán) se desarrolló un intenso clima intelectual. Allí se congregaron artistas y humanistas italianos y españoles. En este ambiente de intercambio cultural, atento en participar en las ideas de la Reforma que se difundió en Nápoles gracias a B. Ochino y a Valdés, nace el poema De principiis rerum del último académico pontaniano: Escipión Capece. En esta obra no sólo se rastrean motivos lucrecianos y virgilianos sino también el influjo de los tratados cosmológicos de Pontano. En este estudio, la autora propone el análisis de la figura y de la obra de Capece a través de sus lectoras: Isabel de Vilamarí y las mujeres cultas de su corte.During the first half of sixteenth century and in the Salernitan court of the last prince Sanseverino and his wife Isabel de Vilamarí (a lady coming from a noble Catalan family) an intense intellectual climate developed. Italian and Spanish artists and humanists met there. In this environment of cultural exchange, that shared in the Reform ideas divulged in Naples by B. Ochino and Valdés, Scipione Capece (the last member of the Pontanian Academy) writes his poem De principiis rerum. In his book Capece uses Latin literature (Vergil and Lucretius mainly) and Pontano's treatises on cosmology. The author of this paper studies Scipione Capece through his female readership: Isabel de Vilamarí and the learned women from her court
