Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2007The aim of the present study is to analyse how issues of Albanian national identity are portrayed in Ismail Kadaré's novel Broken April (Prilli i Thyer), and how such features have been appropriated and translated onto the screen into a Northeastern Brazilian context. I depart from the premise that, even though Brazilian elements are indeed shown in the film, the non existence of the Kanun in Brazil, and the use of narrative techniques different from the ones employed in the novel render the story of the blood feuds in the film more universal than the genuinely Albanian reality depicted in the novel. In sum, the appropriation transcends the Albanian reality into a universal context, showing, at the same time, elements which are typical of the Brazilian culture.O objetivo do presente estudo é analisar como questões sobre a identidade nacional Albanesa são retratadas no romance Abril Despedaçado (Prilli i Thyer), de Ismail Kadaré, e como tais questões foram apropriadas e traduzidas para a tela num contexto Nordestino-Brasileiro.

Authorship in the Interstices of History, Biography, Reality and Memory: Histoire(s) du cinéma and Cabra Marcado para Morrer

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of Workplace Environment toward Employees' Productivity at Syarikat Air Terengganu Sdn.Bhd., Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu. This study used simple random for sampling technique and the sample size was determined using Krejcie and Morgan (1970). Survey questionnaires were distributed to 92 respondents who worked as support staff and yield 86.96% response rate. Majority of the respondents were female, aged 31 to 40 years old and from STPM/Diploma education level. Many of them has 6-10 years of experience. The findings showed that there was a moderate relationship between Workplace Environment and Employees' Productivity (r= .485, p=0.00). Moreover, the descriptive statistics was also significant as a result for furniture (mean=3.77, SD=.386), noise (mean=3.39, SD=.826), temperature (mean=4.020, SD=.489), lighting (mean=3.85, SD=.420) and spatial arrangement (mean=3.70, SD=.598). The result also indicated there are relationship between workplace environment and employees' productivity. It is recommended that managers should improve the productivity of the employee by alert with workplace environment. Future research should study on several different types of method to gather the data. This method can road to paperless and easy the author to gather and distribute questionnaire other than time saving

Turbulence Modeling of Wall Jets using the Algebraic Structure Based Model

Report PRE-2628. The Algebraic Structure Based Model (ASBM) of Langer and Reynolds (2003) provides an innovative approach for modeling the turbulent stresses, while incorporating information on the structure of turbulence and providing closure for Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The normal turbulent stresses, for which the ASBM has shown superior results, are difficult to replicate using the conventional Boussinesq hypothesis that forms the backbone of common eddy-viscosity models. The results for mean velocities and diagonal turbulent stresses, and the computational cost are kept at an acceptable level to allow the model to compete effectively with common eddy-viscosity models. In this work, the ASBM has been applied to two new validation cases; the plain wall jet of Eriksson et al. (1998) and the slot impinging jet of Zhe and Modi (2001). Encouraging results are obtained for the normal turbulent stresses, while the mean velocities and turbulent shear stress are comparable to the v2f eddy-viscosity model of Lien and Durbin (1996). Also drawbacks of the ASBM are pointed out that emerge from the fact that the model is algebraic and hence relies only on local flow properties.Energy TechnologyProcess and EnergyMechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineerin

Kadare's Newly-Formed Words with the Suffix -Shëm

If a scholar studies the language that a particular writer uses, that implies that the scholar also endorses that writer's work. The language itself is alive and just like anything that is alive; it can be subject to injuries and damages. Ismail Kadare is a visionary author who senses the danger that a language may encounter. That is the reason why he goes on a mission to protect and enrich the Albanian language with newly-formed words. Using almost each and every one of the suffixes and prefixes available in Albanian while applying the internal word-forming rules that the Albanian language dictates, Ismail Kadare has created a vast number of new words that carry an immense lexical and stylistic value, without being morphologically incorrect. In this paper we study Ismail Kadare's newly-formed words using the suffix – shëm, thus offering our contribution to the studying of Ismail Kadare's newly-formed vocabulary

Date consumption and dietary significance in the United Arab Emirates

Date consumption in the United Arab Emirates was determined among different subgroups of the nation's society. Adult consumers of both sexes and different age groups (18-30 and 30-60) and occupations (students, workers, at home) were surveyed for information on their daily consumption of six date food groups (rutab, tamr, seh, debbs, batheeth and madlouj). Percentage distribution of portion size, frequency of consumption and season, over different consumer groups per date food group, were determined. Differences in the daily consumption of every date food group within and among the different population groups were tested. The most consumed date food groups were rutab and tamr, with rutab being more frequently consumed than tamr during the summer season. Overall, no major differences were observed in average daily consumption per capita of most of the date food groups between males and females, between employed and home-based consumers, and between students and individuals of 18-30 years old. On average, daily consumption of dates per capita was 114.3 g, equivalent to 10 date fruits. However, it was noted that the younger population does not consume dates as much as the older population does. Nevertheless, data obtained highlighted the significance of dates in the UAE nation's diet considering the relatively high average consumption of dates per capita. © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry.AHMED IA, 1995, FOOD CHEM, V54, P305, DOI 10.1016-0308-8146(95)00051-J; *AM DIAB ASS AM DI, 1995, EXCH LISTS MEAL PLAN; BARRY N, 1993, SOC PHILOS POLICY, V10, P1; *DIET REF INT, 1999, AD DIET REF INT CALC; El-Behissy EY, 2001, J AGR FOOD CHEM, V49, P1239, DOI 10.1021-jf000812e; ELBEHISSY EY, 1998, DAILY CONSUMPTION RA; *FAO, 2004, FAOSTAT DAT FOOD AGR; IBRAHIM AM, 1993, DATE PALM ITS PLANTA; KHATAB A, 1982, P 1 INT S DAT PALM K; Lambiote B., 1982, P 1 INT S DAT PALM K; MAIKKI MA, 1997, DATE PALM, V1, P130; Miller CJ, 2003, EUR J CLIN NUTR, V57, P427, DOI 10.1038-sj.ejcn.1601535; *MIN AGR FISH, 1994, AGR STAT YB; MUSAIGER AO, 1993, TRADITIONAL FOODS AR; NIXON R. The role of Plasmodium falciparum var genes in malaria in pregnancy

    No full text
Sequestration of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes in the placenta is responsible for many of the harmful effects of malaria during pregnancy. Sequestration occurs as a result of parasite adhesion molecules expressed on the surface of infected erythrocytes binding to host receptors in the placenta such as chondroitin sulphate A (CSA). Identification of the parasite ligand(s) responsible for placental adhesion could lead to the development of a vaccine to induce antibodies to prevent placental sequestration. Such a vaccine would reduce the maternal anaemia and infant deaths that are associated with malaria in pregnancy. Current research indicates that the parasite ligands mediating placental adhesion may be members of the P. falciparum variant surface antigen family PfEMP1, encoded by var genes. Two relatively well-conserved subfamilies of var genes have been implicated in placental adhesion, however, their role remains controversial. This review examines the evidence for and against the involvement of var genes in placental adhesion, and considers whether the most appropriate vaccine candidates have yet been identified
