No full textIn de nacht van 14 april 1945 werden 5.000 vrouwen uit kamp Buchenwald in colonne de weg op gejaagd. Geëscorteerd door SS’ers moesten de gevangenen grote afstanden afleggen. De ontberingen waren onmenselijk. Het doel van de Duitsers was om zoveel mogelijk vrouwen de ‘dodenmars’ niet te laten overleven.
Negen jonge vrouwen wisten samen te ontsnappen. Wat volgde was een hachelijke zwerftocht door vijandig gebied, op zoek naar het oprukkende Amerikaanse leger. De vrouwen waren afhankelijk van mensen die hen onderweg eten en onderdak geven. Verschillende malen dreigde verraad. Een overnachting in een landhuis waar Nederlandse NSB-kinderen verbleven, loopt bijna fataal af. Op het moment dat de uitputting nabij was en de kogels hen letterlijk om de oren vlogen, hoorde de vrouwen het geluid van een jeep met daarin twee Amerikaanse soldaten. Ze waren gered.
De documentaire ´Ontsnapt´ vertelt het aangrijpende verhaal van de negen vrouwen aan de hand van dagboekfragmenten en het relaas van Madelon Verstijnen en Christine Bénedite. Beide vrouwen zijn inmiddels de 90 gepasseerd, maar de verschrikkelijke voettocht van april 1945 staat in hun geheugen gegrift. De kijker is er ook getuige van hoe Madelon en Christine elkaar voor het eerst sinds de dodenmars, 64 jaar na dato, weer ontmoeten. De film is uitgebracht op dvd met ondertiteling in het Nederlands, Engels, Frans en Duits

No full textDe geïnterviewde vertelt over haar werk in het Franse verzet, en hoe ze is verraden en in eenzame opsluiting terecht kwam voordat ze naar Buchenwald werd getransporteerd. Ze werkte daar in de nabijgelegen wapenfabriek. Omdat ze verantwoordelijk was voor de temperatuur van de ovens heeft ze geprobeerd door het verlagen van de temperatuur de kwaliteit van de kogels te beïnvloeden.
Door haar werk in de fabriek (Hasag) kende ze vijf van de negen vrouwen met wie ze uiteindelijk uit de dodenmars zou ontsnappen. Ze vertelt over hun ontmoeting met een boer en zijn dochter die hun gastvrij ontvingen na de ontsnapping. Door contact te zoeken met de plaatselijke Duitse autoriteiten kregen ze op een goed moment een papier dat hen naar de overkant van De Mulde bracht. Daar ontmoetten ze de Amerikanen.
De geïnterviewde besloot in eerste instantie bij de Amerikanen te blijven omdat ze uitstekend Duits en Russisch sprak en kon tolken. Toen ze terugkwam bij haar ouders, merkte ze dat haar moeder de hoop om haar terug te zien nooit had opgegeven

Boundaries in spatial cognition: Looking like a boundary is more important than being a boundary
Get PDFLarge walls and other typical boundaries strongly influence neural activity related to navigation and the representations of spatial layouts. They are also major aids to reliable navigation behavior in young children and nonhuman animals. Is this because they are physical boundaries (barriers to movement), or because they present certain visual features, such as visually extended 3D surfaces? Here, these 2 factors were dissociated by using immersive virtual reality and real boundaries. Eighty adults recalled target locations in 1 of 4 environments: plywood, where a virtual wall coincided with a large piece of real plywood; pass through, where the virtual wall coincided with empty space and participants could pass through it; pass over, where the virtual wall was projected downward to be visible underneath a transparent floor; and cones, where the walls were replaced with traffic cones. One condition had features that were boundaries and looked like boundaries (plywood); 2 had features that were not boundaries but looked like boundaries (pass over/through); and 1 had features that were not boundaries and did not look like boundaries (cones). The precision and bias of responses changed only as a function of looking like a boundary. This suggests that variations in spatial coding are more closely linked to the visual properties of environmental layouts than to whether they contain physical boundaries (barriers to movement). counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
