A stabilised Benders decomposition with adaptive oracles for large-scale stochastic programming with short-term and long-term uncertainty

    No full text
Benders decomposition with adaptive oracles was proposed to solve large-scale optimisation problems with a column bounded block-diagonal structure, where subproblems differ on the right-hand side and cost coefficients. Adaptive Benders reduces computational effort significantly by iteratively building inexact cutting planes and valid upper and lower bounds. However, Adaptive Benders and standard Benders may suffer severe oscillation when solving a multi-region investment planning problem. Therefore, we propose stabilising Adaptive Benders with the level set method and adaptively selecting the subproblems to solve per iteration for more accurate information. Furthermore, we propose a dynamic level set method to improve the robustness of stabilised Adaptive Benders by adjusting the level set per iteration. We compare stabilised Adaptive Benders with the unstabilised versions of Adaptive Benders with one subproblem solved per iteration and standard Benders on a multi-region long-term power system investment planning problem with short-term and long-term uncertainty. The problem is formulated as multi-horizon stochastic programming. Four algorithms were implemented to solve linear programming with up to 1 billion variables and 4.5 billion constraints. The computational results show that: a) for a 1.00% convergence tolerance, the proposed stabilised method is up to 113.7 times faster than standard Benders and 2.14 times faster than unstabilised Adaptive Benders; b) for a 0.10% convergence tolerance, the proposed stabilised method is up to 45.5 times faster than standard Benders and unstabilised Adaptive Benders cannot solve the largest instance to convergence tolerance due to severe oscillation and c) dynamic level set method makes stabilisation more robust

Integrated investment, retrofit and abandonment energy system planning with multi-timescale uncertainty using stabilised adaptive Benders decomposition

We propose the REORIENT (REnewable resOuRce Investment for the ENergy Transition) model for energy systems planning with the following novelties: (1) integrating capacity expansion, retrofit and abandonment planning, and (2) using multi-horizon stochastic mixed-integer linear programming with multi-timescale uncertainty. We apply the model to the European energy system considering: (a) investment in new hydrogen infrastructures, (b) capacity expansion of the European power system, (c) retrofitting oil and gas infrastructures in the North Sea region for hydrogen production and distribution, and abandoning existing infrastructures, and (d) long-term uncertainty in oil and gas prices and short-term uncertainty in time series parameters. We utilise the structure of multi-horizon stochastic programming and propose a stabilised adaptive Benders decomposition to solve the model efficiently. We first conduct a sensitivity analysis on retrofitting costs of oil and gas infrastructures. We then compare the REORIENT model with a conventional investment planning model regarding costs and investment decisions. Finally, the computational performance of the algorithm is presented. The results show that: (1) when the retrofitting cost is below 20% of the cost of building new ones, retrofitting is economical for most of the existing pipelines, (2) platform clusters keep producing oil due to the massive profit, and the clusters are abandoned in the last investment stage, (3) compared with a traditional investment planning model, the REORIENT model yields 24% lower investment cost in the North Sea region, and (4) the enhanced Benders algorithm is up to 6.8 times faster than the level method stabilised adaptive Benders.</p

    No full text
However, its conceptualization has been changing drastically in recent years, especially after the anti-cultural movements initiated in the mid-1960s and the erosion of patriarchal ideology and modernity, as well as the weakening of religious influence in Brazilian society. This mutation, which includes enlargement and socio-cultural changes, has effects in several areas of the humanities that reflect, as it could not be, the Law. The concept of family, in the legal and legislative spheres, is indicative and can be used to reflect social demands. In this way, the present work makes a historical progression of the origin of the Modern and Democratic State of Law, in order to examine the contemporary conceptualization of the family from the point of view of the country's legal scholars, the principles protected in our legal system and then, a legal definition of family will be proposed. “Eldorado, Babel e faroeste”: a Londrina de Rodrigo Garcia Lopes, em O trovador

    No full text
The northern part of the department of Paraná, Brazil is a recently colonized region, with scarce literary production, particularly with respect to fiction. The article focuses on O trovador, by Rodrigo Garcia Lopes, which provides an overview of the period, specifically of the city of Londrina, on the basis of a Provencal poem. In the style of Umberto Eco, the author writes a historical-detective novel in which literature and history enter into an intense, erudite, and ironic dialogue. It provides a critical view of the English colonial spirit, in a manner that informs and entertains the reader, while authenticating its fictional discourse with elements of reality. The article addresses the work as a new type of historical novel and discusses the features that make it such (following guidelines suggested by Esteves, among other researchers), discusses the author’s knowledge regarding the “library”, according to Samoyault, and examines Londrina as a human and geographic category. The aim of the present work is to propose a theoretical study concerning the postmortem fame reached by a suicidal writer, Sylvia Plath. The status attained by the North-American poet is not restricted to literature, as it finds repercussion also in the mass culture manifestations. Thus, as to find contextual support that would have transformed her in myth and icon of the 20th Century, a reflexive dialogue with the culture, literature and consumptions forms is presented. Making use of the methodological tools of the Literary Theory and of the Cultural Studies, we map the elements that are responsible for the fame invention, among which we highlight the field of the biographical representations, the critical evaluation task and the reception place of the ordinary reader. From those three main fronts we deploy other fundamental themes for that particular time, and which contribute strongly to the fame phenomenon manifestation: the spectacularization of society, the voyeurism practice, the transformation of the negativity in negotiation object, the esthetics of death via cultural industry, the mediatization and merchandizing of the individuals, the celebrization of personalities and the loss of reference objects in modern society. The interpretative lines brought here offer the possibility of reading the celebrization of Sylvia Plath#s tragical life as a cultural product belonging to the dynamics of the objects in the consumption society

Faerie Reality in The Spiral Dance by Rodrigo Garcia y Robertson

    No full text
Garcia y Robertson\u27s The Spiral Dance begins as a historical novel set in the time of the rebellion led by the Earl of Northumberland and the Earl of Westmoreland against Elizabeth I in 1569, told from the point of view of Anne, Countess of Northumberland. It is also an epic or heroic fantasy; besides Lady Anne, two of its main characters are a werewolf named Jock and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Their adventures carry them not only to the highlands of Scotland but to the realm of Faerie. The author\u27s theme is that one must lose all one has before one can be truly transformed—or, to put it another way, before one can discover one\u27s true self. It may be read as an extended meditation on the nature of reality and illusion, and the discovery of true identity. Thus it is a classic Quest tale. Like Bilbo Baggins, Anne goes “there and back again,” and returns changed. So have heroes from Gilgamesh to Odysseus to Sir Gawain to Luke Skywalker. But the author\u27s original contribution to this genre is his conception of Faerie. We are accustomed to think of the ordinary world as real, and of Faerie as the land of illusion. But in Garcia y Robertson\u27s fictional universe, the ordinary world is a place of illusion, where things are seldom what they seem, and Faerie is the realm of reality, where illusion is impossible, and all things are seen for what they really are. In this paper I shall explore how the author uses this conceit to pursue his theme, with references to J. R. R. Tolkien and Sir Thomas of Ercildoun. I hope to show how this master storyteller gives his readers a rollicking tale of warfare and witchcraft, which is also an extended spiritual meditation on identity, illusion, and reality. Socioeconomic status and diabetes among Mexican adults

    No full text
Diabetes is a significant health problem in Mexico and one of the leading causes of death. Studies in other countries have suggested that socioeconomic status (SES) contributes to the development of type 2 diabetes. However, only few studies in Mexico have dealt with SES differentials in diabetes. The aim of this thesis is to examine the association between SES and type 2 diabetes among Mexican adults aged 20-69. In contrast with previous studies, we use individual, household and municipality measures of SES simultaneously when investigating: prevalence of total, diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes in the year 2000; and incidence of diagnosed diabetes during the period 2002-2005. Furthermore, we explore the effects of diabetes on employment status, and changes in waist circumference (WC) among adults with diabetes.Data were used from the 2000 National Health Survey (NHS-2000) and the Mexican Family Life Surveys 2002 and 2005 (MxFLS-2002 and MxFLS-2005). Diabetes was defined using self-reports (in both surveys) and outcomes from capillary blood tests (only in the NHS). SES was measured through educational attainment, household income, household wealth and municipality deprivation. The index of household wealth was calculated and evaluated using the National Survey of Household Income and Expenditure (ENIGH-2000). The Human Development Index (HDI) and the Deprivation Index (DI) at the municipality level are official statistics obtained from the 2000 Mexican Census of population. Two level logistic regression models were estimated, and the analyses were stratified mainly by sex, urban/rural stratum and municipality deprivation. Our findings confirm an association between socioeconomic status and diabetes. However, this relationship varies by SES measure, sex, urbanisation and deprivation. A consistent result was that diabetes was more common among the less educated, in the least deprived municipalities, and in urbanised localities. Variations in diabetes between municipalities were better explained by genetic, biological and lifestyle factors, than by SES. Diabetes was associated with working status, but not with employment status or changes in WC. Increases in urbanisation and further socioeconomic development, in combination with increased life expectancy, will lead to a higher prevalence of diabetes particularly among the most vulnerable groups. In addition to the promotion of healthy behaviours in the overall Mexican population, health sustainability should be prioritized in those communities at early stages of the nutritional and epidemiological transition

The survival of the literary text in translation: bringing Leaves of Grass back into circulation

    No full text
This research work comparatively relates the translations into Brazilian Portuguese of Walt Whitman\'s Leaves of Grass, as well as presents a translation proposal for some poems of the volume, specifically from the Song of Myself collection. For this critical comparison, we selected some translations made by four Brazilian translators: Péricles Eugênio da Silva Ramos, Geir Campos, Rodrigo Garcia Lopes and Bruno Gambarotto. Then we presented a translation with commentary of the same poems that were compared. For this purpose, we searched for more than 50 translations in Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and French. The present work brings the theories of Antoine Berman (ennoblement and elongation) and Paulo Henriques Britto (critical comparison). The proposal was to reflect on translations based on these theories, especially in the moments when they converge in the process of translation as an agent of survival of the work. Through the translator\'s task, the text lives longer and better, beyond the author\'s possibilities. And it is in poetry that translation as creation and criticism has its fundamental role in the rewriting of literary texts

Arhealth: Enabling wellness as a road to health with service design

The COVID-19 health crisis at the beginning of 2020 saw a dramatic number of adaptations to health systems around the world. One of these adaptations was the accelerated shift towards e-health solutions. This rise happened because of the inability of the medical system to serve patients of non-respiratory related illnesses during the pandemic. This was experienced as a rise from 1% to 70% of remote general practitioners consultations in the early months of 2020(Mueller, 2020).Key to these consultations is the use of medical devices to gather information relating to the patient's state. New medical device categories now allow people with little or no training to collect accurate information (European Commission, 2017), including by using wearables first intended for tracking activity-related metrics that are currently being fitted with state-of-the-art sensors that allow them to become a realistic alternative to strict medical devices (Raja et al., 2019). Despite this, several key issues impede their use in standard medical practice and are more commonly used as informational tools only (Raja et al., 2019).The use of wearables as informational tools has the potential to increase the awareness of people of the effect of the things they do on their wellbeing, an essential part of the concept of preventative medicine. A concept that aims to enhance wellbeing is wellness, with health being a state of being and a goal to achieve (Stoewen, 2015).Wellness is also a concept that is well entrenched on the product lines of the brands of Arçelik, and is seen as an important opportunity to grow medical capabilities in the products they already dominate. This thesis project presents a service design concept that aims to help people create their own wellness journey by passively tracking habits and receiving advice based on this information. The concept is based around the gathering of information through smart home appliances, focused around four modules: nutrition, activity, sleep and vitals. The project concludes that the proposed service solution brings the possibility to integrate the capabilities that Arçelik needs to enter the larger healthcare market while staying in the product categories that it dominates.Strategic Product Desig
